all right people, time to prove you aren't Apple haters -- gotta rage out on Intel now, too, right?!

do you complain about all the rest of consumer goods that go into landfill? DVD players, vcrs, tvs, etc etc
I do yes. I wouldn't go as far as to call myself a tree hugger or green nazi but pretty close lol.

When Lightning was introduced, it was described as being the way forward for the next ten years. I wonder if it will see out the ten years or will something else replace it? Could Lightning be discarded in favour of wireless everything?

I don't see why Apple couldn't stick with lightning for 10 years or so before moving on to something else like the smart connector or wireless.

God dammit.
The amount of people ok with this makes me sad.
This is not the same thing as the floppy disk. Stop making the comparison.
Think of people that just bought a new car, that has a USB port for charging and a 3.5 jack for aux input.
Adapters?
Screw'em?
LOL, poor people that don't buy cars with iCar or whatevs?
Bluetooth?

Come on, there is no actual scenario where this is beneficial for the costumer...
Turn off the ARDF (tm) for a minute.

Except that lightning came out before USB-C here. So I get to continue using lightning accessories with existing and future iOS devices while everyone else has to ditch their micro-USB peripherals for USB-c ones.
Certainly having different devices or changing platforms offers problems when we have disparate standards for accessories. Not something I envy, but also don't have too much of an issue since I stick with iDevices and don't change between manufacturers.

This. I will likely get the Note 7 this fall as well, so having headphones that work with USB-C and both a new iPhone and the Note 7 would be nice.

Only thing is your note 7 wouldn't support USB c audio, unless Samsung can add it with a software update.

Waterproofing really requires the removal of the 3.5 mm jack to be useable while wet. If you've ever had your phone out in the rain while running, you know that getting a tiny bit of water in the headphone jack means that it will think that there is a jack in the device for an hour or more. If they make the waterproofing excuse though, I would like to see some sort of wireless charging so that the device can be charged while wet like the Apple Watch.

I can relate to that. I run with my phone and that happened to me a few times=.

Note 7 has a headphone jack.

correct, but if I'm going to get some good USB-C headphones (non 3.5mm jack headphones), it'd be nice to use cross platform. I know Apple will likely go with lightning but I'd prefer USB-C so I could use on phones other than an iPhone (and without an adapter).

At least this explains why Apple is going to include a Lightning to 3.5mm (1/8" phone plug) converter with the product. The product lifecycle of Lightning audio equipment will indeed be quite short and will be supplanted by a mountain of USB-C audio stuff.

Historical note. The 1/4" phone plug is how traditional phone calls were connected by operators.

That entire room and many others like it was replaced by one instance on a single server. in a building where there are hundreds of servers and thousands of instances.

Apple is working on a 'super-charged' Lightning cable. Lightning will appear on MacBooks and will be used to charge your laptop and be compatible with your Lightning earbuds from your iPhone.

The Lightning cable will be further 'smart' in that it can be used to charge all Apple devices and moderate the rate of charge required.

"Digital audio" except audio is an analog thing. You have to get the digital signal converted to an analog one at some point, and since the phone already had a DAC for the internal speakers why even bother with adding yet another DAC in the headphones when there's one in the phone anyway?

It could be that because the speaker is just bad quality, they can get away with putting a much cheaper/worse DAC in the iPhone 7. And then of course sell you an external DAC in the adapter. Apple is now run by bean counters with no vision who are just interested in the profit margin. Might work in the short term, but its a terrible long term strategy.

The wired headphone is like the wired ethernet jack. Very few are going to care about them in a few years - wireless will be the standard.

And where is the "I will switch to Samsung" crowd now?

Waiting for our pre-orders :).

Just like the floppy disc, people will bemoan the removal of the traditional headphone jack...but in time, ALL other smartphone makers will follow Apples lead.

Terrible comparison. The floppy disc was replaced by something much better. Replacing 3.5mm with Lightning is not much better.

Tim Crook would rather sell us Lightning to USB-C adapters

That, or some sort of adapter. I'm sure their shareholders will be pleased by adapter sales, since you know them ditching 3.5mm for Lightning will create a new stream of revenue.

Only thing is your note 7 wouldn't support USB c audio, unless Samsung can add it with a software update.

So even though it supports USB 3.1 via USB-C, it doesn't support USB-C audio?

Because, at least in my experience, the iPhone's built-in DAC is *****. The sound quality you can get with using a half-decent external DAC is a much better than using the built-in one.

I too thought I'd miss the 3.5mm headphone jack, until I realized that I don't use it anyway! One's current headphones, coupled with something like the AudioQuest Dragon Fly, are a great solution (I don't think I'd ever buy Lightning-specific headphones) for those who listen on the go.

IF I was forced to buy new headphones over some marketing decision to create artificial demand, it should have a industry standard connector... So USB-xy rather than... Lightning... Or 30pin dock.. Or whatever they come up with next in a couple of new iPhone releases.

My private life as well as my business live has ALWAYS been made a lot easier by agreed industry standards.

That's a good point about the DAC but I wonder what percentage of the average user would notice a difference.

With respect, I disagree. Yes, Wifi is very convenient, but give me the speed, reliability, and security of GBE or 10GBE any day (if only Apple would make machines that support the latter...)!

Look at the video interview with Tim Cook when the FBI stuff was going down: his iMac is clearly using a wired Ethernet connection.

Almost every new car released in the past 8 years has Bluetooth that will stream all your music without any issues. I do it daily. I start my car and my music is ready for me to play, no cables or bs to deal with. While I'd miss the 3.5, it's not the end of the world as some of you are making it out to be.
