I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the possibility that Apple is already done with putting Intel CPUs into the iMac. Apple might decide to switch the iMac over to an A-series ARM instead.

I don’t see the scenario where Apple starts with the iMac. The 2019 iMac was fine. It’s on the low-power side where Apple’s CPUs would be particularly interesting alternatives for a start.

So suppose we see ARM Macs in 2021; it’ll probably come to the iMac in 2022. That would mean three years of no upgrades. Nah. Instead, Comet Lake now, Rocket/Alder/Tiger Lake next, maybe then ARM.

I don't understand why their high-end chips always drop after the cheap junk. That seems backwards.

Because almost all computers sold today are either laptops or servers, those are the ones Intel focuses on. And servers don’t need frequent updates. So, laptops.

Which aren’t “cheap junk” anyway.

Intel can brag all they want about how their chips are great for Macs, but I think Apple has had enough of their complacency.

Maybe, but Apple plans longer than that. Intel was poor for about half a decade, and they’re recovering. Depending on the internal roadmaps Intel shares with Apple, I wouldn’t be so sure that Apple “has had enough”.

You’re judging based on the recent past. Apple isn’t.

Very few of Apple’s actual customers seem to care about iMac bezels 🤷‍♂️

Next up: Apple reduces bezels, adds notch. Entire forum complains about notch. As many or more people but iMac regardless. Nobody actually cares.

Not on their mid-high end consumer computer. The iMac isn't going ARM for a long time, at least not the high-end models. They could stick an ARM CPU into a low-end 21in model.

... reliable leaker "CoinX" cryptically said in March that both iMac and Mac mini updates would be coming "soon." The Mac mini update did come two weeks later, but we've yet to see anything official about new iMacs.
The price adjustment on the mini line wasn’t an update. Both the mini and iMac use these chips released today. I’d think WWDC would be a good release timeframe, but it could easily be later in the year.

If Apple does go ARM, it would be nice to see a Ryzen AMD64/x86-64 coprocessor to run a hypervisor for x86 compatibility and act as an integrated gpu solution.

AMD have got some fantastic products but their chip's don't fully "eclipse" anything Intel has gone unless you've getting one of their 32 core chips and you have an app optimised to make use of multi cores like that. Again it's application dependant but if AMD can sort that single core speed they can beat Intel for gaming and if they could just create a high-end graphics card that can outscore Nvidia they could win there too!

Well they sure eclipse Intel in terms of price and availability. Intel's had production constraints for years which drove the price up a lot. For consumers there isn't much point. Even at work (with >100.000 laptops) we're now looking at AMD-based models. That means a lot because it's a company that's very slow to change on issues like this.

Ryzen 4000. 'Nuf said. (Desktops are rumored for October, laptops are already out). Go back to sleep, Intel.

Ryzen 4000 for laptop is really Ryzen 3000 for Desktop in terms of technology :) It's just a marketing trick... I like AMD but this business is as bad as Intel's marketing.

I think that's for 2 reasons:

The high-end sells less so overall they can push much less volume on it, which is what they need to get things running
Also, the yields will be lower on the high performance chips, so it's better to optimise the process on the lower-specs

Regarding a Mac mini update, the ARK lists no “B” (BGA) versions of any of these CPUs. Does that mean they don’t exist? No, but at this point, there is no reason why they wouldn’t list them, unless Apple asked them not to until an updated Mac mini was released. I would not hold my breath as I think the mini may make due with 8th Gen CPUs until Apple updates it with their own A-Series CPUs.

Regarding an iMac update, I wouldn’t hold my breath for that either. If Apple does utilize the Core i9-10900K, then, as @PickUrPoison points out, Apple will lock it at 95w TDP to keep it from running to hot inside the current iMac chassis. They wont be updating the ID of the chassis until they move to their own CPUs.

Regarding the iMac Pro update, someone pointed out in another thread that Apple may be having issues sourcing enough Xeon W-22XX Series CPUs to be able to justify rolling out an update.

If Apple is indeed serious about moving to their own CPUs, expect them to announce it at WWDC and announce the timeline for getting rid of Intel Macs, which will either happen quickly over the next 2-3 years or Apple will carry Intel Macs in parallel with Arm-based Macs, but only as “Pro“ models, meaning MacBook Pro, iMac Pro and Mac Pro for those who absolutely must have an Intel-based Mac, but I don’t think theyll last longer than 5 years if that.

No AMD, period and no redesigned chassis for any Intel-based Mac, as Apple wants to reserve new chassis for Arm-based Macs.

I'd take a iMac with Face ID, smaller bezels and touch id backlit magic keyboard
It will be an Arm-based iMac, because that wont be happening with Intel.

I was waiting for this to update my 3770k finally but with the current pandemic going not the best time to do it. Let's see next year.

Intel blew it, their years of complacency allowed AMD to catch up and eclipse them. Now with rumors of Apple using their own CPUs in MacBooks, which will suck for those who like Intel based Macs (great for running MacOS and Windows), Intel can brag all they want about how their chips are great for Macs, but I think Apple has had enough of their complacency.
Then why doesn’t Apple switch to AMD?

Intel is dead. Long live AMD!

lol Intel is far from dead. AMD is still second fiddle. If you look at benchmarks with open eyes, and real-world application performance, it takes twice the cores to match an Intel CPU and AMD CPU's as per usually, have less IPC.

Fanyboys unite again around the underdog ;)

I’ve long thought the mini would be updated this year. I hope I’m not wrong 🙁

Amazing, how absolutely boring and unimpressive I know any article about Intel chip "upgrades" will be these days.

Better off to wait for the first Apple developed CPU in the iMac hopefully next year. That is the future. Not these soon to be forgotten Intel CPUs.

AMD chips aren't faster than Intel's offering in single core performance which is what most people use. Also even their multicore performance is only a few percentage points higher. Nothing to get excited about. Just wait for Apple's own CPUs next year and beyond.
