x25-e

I went from the 320 gb stock 5400 rpm hdd to the Intel X25-E, which is really fast and enjoyable, but only 64 gb.

I have a quick question:

1. Replacing the hard drive does not void the warranty for a 17" unibody mbp?

2. When I took out the two black screws that hold the small clasp, my screwdriver stripped one screw and left a mark making it obvious that I took out those screws at one time. Does this evidence matter?

1. If you need to replace the battery and it's necessary to open up the laptop, let apple do it just in case. As long as nothing goes wrong with replacing the HD, you should be fine.

2. Probably not, but you could buy replacement screws in the future.

Don't bother with the Apple's SSD. There are no bootcamp problems with the recent 80GB models and no problem with ANY 160GB model.

If you buy one new right now, it is most likely going to be perfectly fine. Intel will replace it for you if you call them up and say that it doesn't work.

I think when I buy my MBP I'll buy the 160GB, since it'll be enough for the next 2 years. Anyone know when Intel could lower the prices again (I know they lowered them last year, but you know...)

Firmware #.

It's also worth noting that the drives are firmware-upgradeable. It takes about 2 minutes and won't touch any of the data on the drive (although you should probably back up just in case...)

Edit: removed incorrect info.

I heard it doesn't work a lot of the time.

firmware update won't fix it. it's in the bootloader ROM that's the issue.

they seem to lower the price every two or three month.

recently picked up the P256 for the gf and myself...holy cow that ssd is fast; i'm in hard drive heaven.

P256 is perfect!

Add me to the list of many people who chose the Corsair P256 over the Intel and Vertex. The crazy speed for the Corsair is mainly due to the 128mb cache memory (double the amount that's on the Vertex) and the newer, 2nd gen Samsung controller.

At least with my Windows Vista setup, its significantly faster in all different tests using the latest Crystal DiskMark; except for 4k random disk writes... which the Intel is much faster at. That's why I think some people arguably say the Corsair is the best for "real world" stuff. Which, in my world, includes mainly loading Windows and large apps, games; and occasional writing (such as sequentially reading/writing to the Windows swap file, or installing programs. I have a separate 1TB mechanical disk for media storage. It seems that SSD's work much better in general for Windows.
