I doubt these will be in the MBA anytime soon. It was updated less than a year ago and is Apples lowest cost (and lowest priority) laptop. The Air is basically only sticking around until the MacBook can drop in price and improve in performance. If you want higher performance, and a Retina display, they want to sell you a Pro. If you want extreme portability and a Retina display, they want to sell you a MacBook. If you want cheap, they'll sell you a MBA. It's the new plastic MacBook/iPad 2. It will be available until people stop buying it. Don't expect chip updates every generation though.
Agreed. And when can we expect the next generation of M-core super low power chips with increased performance? 2017?

Very happy with my MacBook (rather work on it than the iMac, especially the keyboard). Not noticeably slower than my 2011 quad core i5 iMac either, very surprising. So I'd rather Apple moved to fanless MacBook inspired machines than perpetuate the Air line. A true 16:9 MacBook, like the 11" Air would be nice, not to mention more ports, that support Thunderbolt, of course.

Where's the Core M roadmap?

Yes, and within the next few years the prices for the MacBook should drop like they did for the Air (though probably not as low). And when you look at the MB next to an Air...the Air looks kind of like the great-aunt of the MB family. :)

As an older user I really want the 13" screen, and the MBA form factor is excellent.

People are gonna go crazy if Apple doesn't update the MBA at all, in preparation for discontinuance.

All Apple have to do is make the 13" retina MacBook Pro half a pound lighter and taper the edges and there will be no need for the 13" MBA and 13" rMBP to exist as separate lines. Skylake's reduced power consumption, Apple's new 'layered' batteries and the switch to USB-C/TB3 ports should enable that.

If they go down the newly-emerged mobile Xeon route for the 15" then the "Pro" label could be reserved for that, which would fit in with the desktop naming.

Well, I've been wanting to replace my ageing MacBook Air with a MacBook Pro for a while now, and I was hoping Skylake would be out this side of November. Looks like it'll be way longer than that, even. Not worth waiting over 6 months for a 10 - 15% upgrade in CPU and GPU. Shame, I was looking forward to Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C, but they're not worth waiting that long for either.

Skylake core M? Should be out by the end of this year hopefully. Broad well core m was the first of the broadwell processors to ship. Is possible that skylake core m will get delayed to early 2016. But in 2017 we should have kaby lake core m

There is still need for mba line and mbp pro line.

Some people want a thinner and more low power 15W CPU.

And some people want a more powerful and better graphics 28W cpu

On a side note there are a couple things I am wondering about, maybe some of you clever people have some ideas.

First it was rumored on this site and others that the 15W skylake cpus would have iris graphics, so does this confirm that this rumor was false? Or are these 520 chips going to labeled iris, or are they as fast as iris, like a 6100?

2ndly, in the last 2 generations of Intels 15W u series. Their integrated graphics had 2 tiers:

Haswell-4400-5000
Broadwell-5500-6000

With the 4400 and the 5500 having only half as many execution units as the 5000 and the 6000. Making the MacBook Air have faster graphics than competing ultrabooks.

In this skylake lineup of 15W cpus, I only see one tier, the 520. Is this more like the lower tier 4400-5500, or the higher tier 5000-6000. is there going to be another graphics tier revealed later?

Can't play this waiting game. Class starts next week, so I went and got a 2015 rMBP last week during a tax free sale.

I hope you're right and we get our new rMBPs this year.
It certainly appears possible. The new mobile Xeons are 47W processors, just like the CPU in the current MacBook Pro retina 15. And Lenovo's using them in comparably priced "pro-level" machines.

the weird thing is, if 15" retina macbook pro chips aren't coming out until 2016, that means the architecture wouldn't have been updated for like 2-3 years. insane.

Thanks for that link, 530 is indeed impressive

It is, but I am very unclear where the 530 fits in with the rest of the hd graphics.

The u series are getting 520, not 530.

And the 530 appears to be on the high end skylake desktop cpus.

Haswell desktops had hd graphics, 4400, 4600, and iris pro 5200.

Which of these is the 530 replacing?
I would guess probably the 4400 or the 4600.

And I have no idea what is happening with broadwell desktops, there are only 2, and they only have iris pro.

I assume the 530 does not replace iris pro, because otherwise it would have said iris.

Why is that insane? Into cpu generations come out about once every 18 months, with every other being a new architecture. So that's a new architecture on average 36 months. Which is 3 years. The Mbps got haswell in October of 2013. And seems they will get skylake mid - 2016. So that's under 3 years, and not out of the ordinary at all.

520 > 4400
530 > 4600
540 > 6000
570 > 6100 + eDRAM
590 > 6200

I am quite sure about the first two but going from there who knows.
520 is definitely not one of the better GPUs because than the CPU model number would be 6558 not 6500.

We can expect a whole new line-up from Apple this october. All Skylake

This article states quite clearly that Q1 2016 is when the MacBook Pro CPU's will be available. I've been saying for the past 6 months that it will be around Q1/early Q2 '16 when we will see these chips and a MBP refresh. So whilst I wish you were correct, you won't be.

540 570 590

I didn't know those existed yet. Seems like I missed something. Can you help me out ?

Oh and I know what you mean about it being 6558 not 6500. But **58 were the 28w cpus with iris.

But 6550 opposed to 6500, would mean Better gpu. But there are none shown here, would this mean there are more skylake u 15w processors that are not on this list that would have a more powerful 530 or 540?

Update: so I found this http://www.eteknix.com/skylakes-new-graphics-core-names-make-more-sense/

Which leads to me to believe there will be more U series processors with faster graphics.

Which also means this article is wrong, the lineup shown in this article is not for MacBook Air, the MacBook Air will most likely use a different U series processor that is not in this list.

I made those up. Just guesses.
There are definitely more but Intel always introduced the GT3 parts later or not at all and they just appeared in the product list.
The 2+2 2 core + GT2 are the smallest chips and usually the first released.

No way!... Skyline chips for MBA may be released soon, but not the 28-watt ones that will be used in the 13" rMBP nor the higher power output ones to be used in the 15" rMB!... It's pretty clearly indcated at the opening topic. The chances are 50%-50% that Apple may unveil 11" & 13" MBAs (alas, without any retina screens) with these Skylake processors, maybe for a last time in the current case & cosmetics. If so, MBAs will enter their 7th year in these cosmetics & footprint... I only hope if these Air's will ever get alive, Apple will also boost the battery life to some 13-14 hrs. thanks to Skylake!...

13" & 15" rMBPs will have to wait until April 2016 or so, and this gives me feeling that they may come with some major re-design (a thinner/lighter case; maybe even with a shorter footprint and therefore with a screen with thinner bezels...). This will necessitate a downgraded battery capacity but Skylake's better energy consumption will still give them 10 hrs (for the 13").

Let's wait and see!...

I think that the Skylake Core M won't actually be implemented in MacBooks for sale until sometime early 2016 (soonest). Echoing what others have said, whatever Intel's release schedule is, we need to add at least 2-3 months for Apple to update their product lines.
