I doubt that Apple is going to allow vt-d on anything except mac pros.
Sadly that will probably be true...but what I am think will be even more interesting is the possible use of vPro as a non proprietary standard for wireless display and peripherals...one can dream...non-proprietary and apple don't get along too often...

I N T E R E S T I N G ! ! !

Now, if I could just find where I left my boat so that I could sail across that Skylake. :D :p

A 14" Retina MacBook (in the 12" style) would really get me interested. I hope they do this. They used to have a 14" MacBook (I think), why not again?

So 12 and 14" Retina MacBooks and 13 and 15" Retina MacBook Pros... or maybe 16" MacBook Pro with less bezel and thinner chasis? That would get the 17" laptop lovers excited!

What I'm not seeing is a long-term future for the MacBook Air? That seems like the New MacBook being their cheapest laptop now, while the Retina MacBook is kind of the new MacBook Air.

I think the MBA has fallen somewhere in a blurry middle now that the Macbook is out, and the 13" MBP is only half a pound heavier. As it stands, the MBA family is kinda pointless. My next laptop will be a rMBP, but I'd hate to have to wait until next year for the update :(

How many watts are the macbook 15 inch chips? Will the 15 inch chips definitely be out after or at the same time as the 28w? If we aren't going to see new 15 inch macbook pros until march I think i'm just going to buy now. I wanted a redesign, USB C and Thunderbolt 3 (I'm not even that bothered about the skylake processor itself as the power increase seems minimal although the more battery life the merrier). They really should do a silent broadwell update in october if it's going to take this long or is that definitely out of the question.

I can't really deal with my late 2008 macbook pro anymore so might just have to buy. I'm sure by the time the new stuff comes out I won't care that much like I didn't really care about the new macbook pros that followed my late 2008 - until its performance became too low for many new audio plugins I like to use - and that's probably 5 years+ away. Yes, I'm trying to convince myself...give me that skylake now dammit!

I went ahead and bought an early 2015 rMBP yesterday because I decided I didn't want to wait and even if something new comes out in October, I won't really care because this machine is strictly for college work and I have a main desktop that can do any sort of gaming or harder applications I might need. If your 2008 MBP is giving out on you, try a fresh restore if you'd really like to wait! But regardless you'll be happy with what you purchase. The only downside to waiting is if no new rMBP in October, which means a total of probably 7 months till March again.

If there's still a fair chance of a new one in October i'll wait - and if it doesn't come I'll buy. I didn't really understand what implications, if any, the new processor info had for the 15 inch macbook pro.

There is still need for mba line and mbp pro line.
Some people want a thinner and more low power 15W CPU.
And some people want a more powerful and better graphics 28W cpu

...very few Apple customers base their decisions on the TDP of the CPU.

Its not like the current 13" rMBP is a gaming powerhouse or pro graphics workstation - currently, its Unique Selling Points over the Air include the retina display and better connectivity - and these will go away if Apple (as seems likely) moves to an all-retina, all-USB-C lineup. If the new 15W i7 CPU is good enough to satisfy 13" rMBP customers, or if the new 28W CPU is efficient enough to fit in a smaller case* without throttling all the time, the Air and 13" Pro lines could merge.

Apple now have the possibility of offering the 15" rMBP with a Xeon processor (and maybe adding a Quadro or FirePro GPU to keep up with Lenovo) which would be a better fit for the "Pro" tag.

(*Remember, there's already only 1/2 lb in it, and the rMBP has a smaller footprint and smaller maximum thickness).

It was a 14" iBook (using PowerPC processors).

Of course, the Air won't be around for too long. The same way the rMBP replaced almost completely the non-retina MBP (where a model frozen in time is kept around as a budget entry for those that want decent internal storage for a low-ish price, the 13" rMBP costs $1800 with 500 GB whereas the non-retina costs $1100), the rMB will replace the Air within a few years. Right now the Air gives you a $900 or $1000 entry point vs the $1300 for the rMB (and they come with significantly faster processor and more ports), at the cost of less RAM and storage and naturally no retina display. Once you match RAM and storage, the rMB is almost a no-brainer, except for the lower CPU power (and the one-port thing).

I think the Air's keyboard is better than the rMB's keyboard.

I wouldnt get my hopes up for skylake. All the benchmarks for the currently released stuff shows a drop in performance, and where it was better, it was minimal. Its an energy efficiency update it seems.

That's one of the few posts with reasonable/realistic expectations. There's too much hype with Skylake IMO. It's gonna be just another marginal performance and batteries improvement (~10%) over current stuff in the real world.

And it was funny to see people being so sure of themselves that they gonna see MBPs with Skylake this fall. I was convinced it ain't gonna happen before 2016.

History always repeats itself with these releases: people getting all excited about new parts, about the "huge" improvements (which usually turns out to be marginal in most cases) and expecting them to be available sooner than they would.

And for the people speculating about a Macbook Pro 15 with the new mobile Xeon, Lenovo rates its P50 with the new Xeon at 6 hours battery life with a 6-cell. Will that cut it for a Macbook Pro? Food for thought.

The early benchmarks of the iGPU are pretty impressive. Apple needs to follow in the direction of the MacBook and drop the bezels on the Air and add a retina screen. An i7 bezel-less retina MBA would be amazing. It seems like the MBA is doomed in 2017 anyways.
