Unless they find a way to keep the antennae as a part of the body (hopefully with less of the issues seen on the iPhone 4 though).

That's what I was thinking. I'm really expecting Apple to come out with a mind blowing innovative product after a long 16 months. (Actually, they had more than 20 months to work on it since they would have finalized the iPhone 4 design well before its launch, right?).

As someone else said, why in the world would you put a bigger screen on your low-cost, weaker model? It makes absolutely no sense.

That's like a TV company making a huge 60 in. TV with no features, but then the 32in next to it has 1080p, 240Htz, etc...

These products start long before that. The most likely pipeline would begin with concepts at least 2 years out.

Exactly. That's what I was thinking. So then, Apple has had well over 20 months to work on a new iPhone. If all they release is iPhone 4S, then man am I (and probably many others) going to be mad.

Two scenarios

I really only see two scenarios for the next iPhone.

1. A completely redesigned phone dubbed "iPhone 5" with all the trimmings we may have heard of (bigger screen, teardrop, etc). iPhone 4 stays EXACTLY the same. Same A4, same Ram, etc. This would make sense as it would be cheaper to manufacture and it's clearly a different phone.

2. iPhone 4S and that's it. Apple does not market iPhone 4 much, however it goes to a cheaper price level at other retailers. I can't imagine Apple selling two identical phones at Apple, one being faster, with a better camera. That's def not something Apple would do imo.

We'll see soon enough!

Perhaps Apple doesn't have a plan to change the form factor every generation. Why would they? It's not cost effective and I'm sure they can't keep it up for too long. The rest of their products don't change that often.

Yeah, but for a product that's responsible for half of their revenue, and responsible for their explosive growth to the most valuable company on the planet, you'd think they'd ignore the relatively minute costs of new machinery and manufacturing to pump out yet another great product to maintain their reign. They do have $76 billion (probably more now) in cash, so a few dozen million dollars here and there for new machinery wouldn't even create a dent in that enormous cash pile. I think it was SJ who said that their huge cash pile provides them with a security blanket to try new things and innovate.

I dunno, I'm projecting too much of my own thinking into SJ and Cook's thinking, but I just can't help but feel that they'd pump out a redesign to ensure that they remain the undisputed king.

Only a complete moron would think Apple would give a bigger screen to a lower-end device.
