Hey guys, hope someone can help me I'm completely stumped for ideas.
My MBP is in warranty and i am going to the Genius on Saturday, but it would be nice if I could get this problem sorted before then, as its pretty irritating.

Basically, my new i7, 8GB Ram MBP is kernel panics at random points in time. Normally happens about once of twice a day.
I have taken it into the genius bar once and they repaired the disk and checked stuff like that.
I have ran the extended apple hardware test (from the in box dvd) and that showed nothing. In the genius they ran a hardware test and that came through with nothing.

So since all this I formatted the hard disk completely, re-installed OSX and reinstalled all my vital software (Office, CS5...).
Even after doing this the machine has still been kernel panicking - all be it, less that before but it has happened still.

Any ideas? I'm out of them.

10.6.5 - everything else up to date, all applications up to date.

All the "i" Chips have been having this problem. My guess is because the SMBIOS is not updated to the i3 - i5 - i7 chips. SMBIOS controls some features of the chips/Kernel. Your probably going to need to wait for Lion or a EFI update to fix this. This is why its always a safe bet to wait for the 2n gen models of new Macs.

EDIT: Probably because the i7 Chips have a built in memory controller.

Not sure what you are smoking but that is not a wide spread problem. Thus it's not a first generation product problem.

There you go.

Thanks for all the help guys..

The only thing that I see on that list that is able to cause such issues is:

Code:
drwxr-xr-x 3 root admin 102 15 Nov 11:52 McAfee Security.app
drwxrwxr-x 3 root admin 102 15 Nov 11:52 McAfeeSecurityUninstaller.app

Try uninstalling it and see how your kernel panics do afterwards...

Always save a log of each KP because it tells you what caused your problem.

Have uninstalled, I'll see how it goes, thanks.

I don't understand the KP logs but here is one since my re-install of OSX.

Interesting bits are:

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: mds

This is the process that was involved in causing the kernel panic. Mds is mainly involved in indexing and serving metadata of files, e.g. Spotlight.

com.apple.filesystems.ntfs(3.3)@0x14de000->0x153dfff

When there is a kernel panic there also has to be a kext involved, this time it is NTFS support. So it seems to be caused by mds doing something on a windows hard drive of yours? Is that drive permanent or external? Maybe you unplug it without ejecting or something? In any case excluding the drive from Spotlight might solve the crashes. However it could also be McAffee triggering mds on the drive while looking for viruses...

I have a windows boot camp partition.
How should i stop this? place the windows partition into the private area for spotlight so it doesn't try and index it? It would make sense, because the windows partition and mcafee are something i've never had together before. didn't think it would be mcafee on its own because i've never had a problem before.

For now since you've uninstalled McAfee I would just wait and check if it's still happening. If it doesn't and you really want McAfee back you can try putting the whole Windows volume into the Spotlight privacy filter, and also maybe tell McAfee not to scan it if that is possible...

It seems to have done the trick to be honest. I have been using the computer all day without problem, and by now it would have normal kernel panicked a few times.
Thanks for the help hachre. Really helped me out.
I don't spose i really need mcafee, i get it free from university so its on there for the sake of it really.

Great!! Very nice :) Hope it stays that way! :)

How did you know that was the problem, it didn't even cross my mind!!

Before I knew about mds and the ntfs kext, all I did know was your Applications list. Mac OS doesn't kernel panic on it's own so I was looking for Applications on that list that install their own kexts. And the only one you have is McAfee ;)

Congrats
Its been running better than ever since at least 7am GMT. Normally it would have had a few KP by now.

Should be proud of yourself, 4 apple genius didn't notice. Neither did I, and I'm a software engineer student. Oops

Great ;)

Apple should offer me a job :D

I use sophos anti virus and I have 0 issues. And it's free:D
Now about crapfee. No wonder. My dad was having issues in is windows box. Guess what macfee. Lot's of people are having trouble with macfee on windows so no wonder that you had kernel panics.

Not sure what you are smoking but that is not a wide spread problem. Thus it's not a first generation product problem.

There has been a lot of problems of the i5, and i7 chips over heating, Kernel Panic, And throttling of I/O speed. The "i" chips are Very different from the Core 2 Duo chips apple used for so long. And heck, even the first gen intel macs has Crap-tons of problems.

NNNOOOO :mad::mad:

Happened again, it was doing so well...

You have VMware kexts installed but no VMWare in /Applications?! What's up with that?

Look in these locations for the vmware kexts and delete them:
/Library/Extensions
/System/Library/Extensions

You can only search for them via Finder once you are inside the Library folder.

These are the names you have to look for:
com.vmware.kext.vmnet
com.vmware.kext.vmioplug
com.vmware.kext.vmci
com.vmware.kext.vmx86

Also because you have been crashing quite a lot recently it is a good idea to do a filesystem check on your hard drive.

After deleting the kexts, when you restart press and holt Cmd + S right when the screen goes black and keep holding it until the startup console appears. Once it has stopped loading enter 'fsck -fy /' and wait till it's done, then enter reboot and start up normally.

Once you are up and running again start the program Console, enable the Log List from the toolbar, and check All Messsages. Look for messages that say launchd is trying to start something but it can't be found and it is retrying or throttling or something. If you find something like that post it here ;) Look for stuff like this:

18.11.10 02:52:29 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.usbmuxd) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
18.11.10 02:52:39 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.usbmuxd[5222]) posix_spawn("/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/A/Resources/usbmuxd", ...): No such file or directory
18.11.10 02:52:39 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.usbmuxd[5222]) Exited with exit code: 1

Then it is good luck time once again ;)

I do have vmware now. Completely got rid of the windows partition. Never actually booted into it. So just converted bootcamp to a vm and I've been using it that way. Only use windows for vb.net stuff. It's not done it since. Maybe it was because I unloaded the windows partition and didn't re start for a while.

On iPhone ATM. Will do all those file system checks later and have a look at console. Thanks for the help.

Those messages are nothing serious... Have you had more panics since you have done the fsck etc?
