Could you try uninstalling VMWare and try to see if it stops then? I think it was gone after you uninstalled McAfee then returned when you installed VMware... If you do, also make sure the kexts get uninstalled aswell.

Its gone, used proper uninstaller so its completely gone (Gone from terminal "kextstat"). Leave it a while, see if it happens?

What could be causing all this stuff, I've never had to deal with anything like it from a Mac before!?

It looks like a hardware problem to be honest, but just to be sure we should check if it happens still now that VMware is gone again.

If it doesn't you probably have a corrupt installation because of all the crashes and a reinstallation should fix everything. You can just install over what you already have, which will preserve your settings. Then immediatly install all the updates once you have booted into it again.

Also I haven't had the best experience with VMware myself. I recommend Parallels - I have gotten Kernel panics from VMware quite often myself, Parallels only triggers kernel panics sometimes on updates when you reboot.

But for now lets just wait and see ;)

I've been doing some Googleing around and it led me to "Unexpected Shutdowns" being fixed by an SMC reset. Just done it, and instead of seeing a kernel panic most log-ons... i saw facetime (or something called apsd-ft) crashing...
I'll get rid of the beta just to make sure thats not the problem too.

Those refer to power offs during work. SMC does everything related to power and cooling so if that goes crazy you will notice it...

Another voodoo thing you can try is rebooting and holding Command + Option + P + R and keep holding them until you hear the chime for the second time then release them... It can take a while... This is basically like a BIOS reset on PCs. I doubt however that it will fix the panics, but it might!

And Facetime, I have had that installed since it came out and it never gave me any problems :/

Do you still have any warranty on the MacBook Pro?

Thinking about it now, thats when the problem really started, about 2-3 weeks ago when FaceTime became available.

If you wanna proceed to the next step which is hardware testing you can grab this:
http://mersenneforum.org/gimps/Prime95-MacOSX-2511.zip

Once it's running hit Cmd + T, I recommend doing the Blend Test, the In-Place and the Smal FFTs all with default settings for at least 2-3 hours each.

It will detect hardware problems with CPU and/or RAM. If it detects a problem it will warn you in one of the 3 windows, I think the text color is red then...

If you get any errors reported with this test it is definitely a hardware problem. If you reliably trigger a kernel panic with it, it is most likely a heat problem (also a hardware defect as far as Apple is concerned)

Ran Blend, 4am till 8am. With no problems.

It just kernel panicked again, no McAfee, no VMware no NTFS partition.
seeing this in console
Code:
19/11/2010 10:36:05	com.apple.SystemStarter[47]	Starting McAfee Agent

Why is that still anywhere on the system?

The uninstaller might not have removed everything, check:
/Library/StartupItems
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/LaunchAgents
/System/Library/StartupItems
/System/Library/LaunchAgents
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons

for any traces of McAfee, you can also go into the the /Library or /System/Library folders and then use finder to search for mcafee inside them...

Used some sudo commands in terminal for deleting, got rid of some kext which we're mcafee, went through all folders making sure they are clean.
not a problem since, and i've been rebooting the machine alot just too see. no kernel panics and no crashes. i think we've sorted the problem this time.
vmware running fine as well now. nothing is having trouble loading looking at kextstat

So it was McAfee after all. If the Prime Blend test ran for 4 hours or so and no errors it is also very unlikely that you have a hardware problem :)

Lets keep our fingers crossed ;D

I didn't ignore your advise about VMware btw.
I only just put it back on to see if the KPs started again, and since cleaning mcafee completely off manuel, it hasn't had a problem. The system feels faster in general tbh.

You reinstalled McAfee after deleting it and solving the Kernel Panics and forgot that you had done that when they started popping up again?

Macs really don't need virus scanners do they? Do more harm than good!
I"ll give it a day or too as is. won't adjust anything more, see if it happens, got a genius booked on monday but will cancel if nothing more happens over the weekend.
It was horrible using my powerbook wall street in university this morning, but i needed to take notes and didn't trust this thing lol.

thanks for all the help hachre

I've not put mcafee back on at all.
the uninstall just left lots of system files which i didnt notice, which are gone now.

I think that and the McAfee kext on the boot up where crashing and thats what was causing it. mcafee kext where all there and something in startupitems folder but no application to run then. does that make sense?

since cleaning every trace of mcafee off (looking in all the above folders you told me - and deleting kext), i have put VMware fusion back on and nothing has gone wrong since.
so its not VMware causing anything, its mcafee most likely.

Ahh, now I get it. Yea good. Uninstallers usually suck. If you wanna get rid of something completely, especially if it has kexts, you have to manually check all those areas and delete everything.

Let's hope it stays good :) Good luck!

P.S: I completely misread VMware with "McAfee" in your post saying you didn't ignore my advice about it.. That's why I got confused now ;)

This is always my biggest beef with the AV vendors. They purport to make your system more secure -- but most are:
  • terrible bloat-ware
  • a huge tax on performance
  • almost impossible to uninstall cleanly
  • unneeded on Mac

Spidey!!!

I hope it goes well too. Thats alright, thanks for the help. I'll let you know how everything goes.

I've noticed, something like ClamXav once a decade. From my experience now it is anyway.

2 KPs in last couple of hours. Its all going wrong again, but i've not changed anything or installed anything. aint
I'm going to genius bar tomorrow, something right with this machine.

I've been keeping a log of the kernel panics to show apple so they know i'm not just ********ting them

It's certainly very strange. The variety of KP messages you get really just suggest hardware problems. But Prime didn't cause any to show up... It must be a very hard to find hardware problem... Maybe it only pops up when the logicboard is slightly flexed one way or something...

Since you have already tried reinstalling Mac OS and it didn't fix the issue you should try to get them to replace the logic board and / or RAM.

However before you are really 100% sure you really should install Mac OS again to make sure it's not caused through the many KPs you had lately and resultant filesystem corruption that has damaged some system files.

I've just reinstalled the filesystem again. I've just realised the only thing I installed again was FaceTime. Taken it back off and its stopped KP again. Could it be possible that facetime beta is clashing with one of the VMware Kext?

I'll take it back in tomorrow and get them to replace it anyway, otherwise i will feel like i'm living on the edge with this machine. it could KP at any point, want it sorted before apple care runs out.
