If you're talking about the App Store apps, yeah, it's pretty lacking. But good old fashioned Windows programs work fine on it, and there are a ton of them to choose from.

Course then you have to consider if those work well enough for you in a touch environment, but that's an entirely different conversation all together.

That's the problem: most of the traditional Windows programs aren't pen-input or touch-first. I could use OneNote as a whiteboard, but in many regards it isn't as feature rich as some iOS whiteboard Apps.

For example, many iOS whiteboard apps allow for the recording of a lecture, which as a teacher is extremely valuable as I can upload the video so students can review the material later.

Basically, I love the hardware of the Surface Pro 3 but hate the choice of software. I love the software choice of iOS but dislike the iPad hardware.

I really want the iPad Pro to close the gap between what the iPad line and the Surface Pro 3. Apple has nothing to really compete with it: the Surface Pro 3 is between an iPad and MBA. Apple needs a product that is between the two as well.

The thing about all the hate about the iPad Pro is that people fail to realize that Apple is loosing money to Microsoft in this category. iPad sales are flat lining while Surface sales have more than doubled to almost $1 Billion. Apple can't just ignore the strong demand for this category. It's a poor business decision. If Apple wants to improve its iPad sales, a competitor to the Surface Pro 3 would help out a lot.

More than 10" really starts to be problem I have to believe. I've nearly dropped my full size iPad numerous times. Wow

iOS is too limited to make a jumbo iPad very attractive to me.

The only way I'd be interested in this thing is if it were running a more capable operating system.

I will be in line to get this tab. I have an iPad Air 2 still in the seal and will most likely take it back and wait for this. However, I feel that this will be a underwhelming tablet as I believe these will be the final specs

1. A8X (4 cores and not 3 in Air 2) clocked @ 1.5Ghz
2. 3GB RAM
3. IPS LED display
4. 2880x1800 res = 264 ppi
5. 12.9" screen size
6. 7.1mm thin
7. Quad stereo speakers
8. Battery life = 13hrs
9. Starting price = $599 wifi version and $729 with LTE
10. 32GB, 64GB, 128GB configurations available

Most importantly will run iOS8 and not Mavericks. Running Mavericks to me will be the selling point for me. If it goes 4k in screen res that will help me buy this tablet. I would rather Apple shift towards AMOLED over IPS.

Other than that, these specs should hold true. However, not ground breaking by no means.

4K would make it slow as molasse (with current GPUs), not sure you would want that in a pro tablet. Never sure why people want 400 PPI in a tablet...

As for underwhelming... Underwelming as a faster, higher resolution version of what you've already bought (and not even opened)? Kinda funny hey!

I would possibly be underwhelming as a pro tablet, but not as a tablet since it would be boosted Ipad 2, which is top of the tablet heep right now.

Not sure why AMOLED be any better (unless your looking for infinite contrast). In 99% of use, the difference right now is negligeable (our eyes are not calibrated meters). IPS screens are still more durable right now and I'm betting there is no one that could produce the number of AMOLED screens at the resolution they need right now.

As for pricing, you want a bigger, faster, more specced slab at just about the same price as the current one? I'm pretty sure this isn't happening. If it exists, it will be at least $150 more for the base WIFI version

I have to think they would need an integrated keyboard accessory and pen... along with docking options. It starts to look like a Surface pretty quickly.

Personally, I have a iPhone, iPad air, 12" MacBook air, and a 27" iMac. I appreciate the benefits of the different forms for all four: iPhone always present, iPad good for browsing, and will be better for FaceTime with the extra speakers... also good for more involved email communication, and can be stretched for a few other things as well. The MacBook is pulled out when a lot of typing is necessary, or when I want to play with sketchup. The desktop is perfect when ergonomics matter for long sessions, and when you need power or to work across multiple applications at once.

Without changes to how a bigger iPad operates though, I see it as more of a bridge device for a Surface.

If I was a starving college kid I might stretch the use cases more... Heck I remember doing html on my PalmPilot with a keyboard many years ago-- portable and utility makes sense. Bigger isn't always better.

Ditto. I love my iPad, and would love to see one that's capable of doing far more than its currently capable of. The SP3 is almost that tablet. The one thing it lacks comparatively is the touch based environment that makes the iPad such a joy to use. Using desktop apps on a tablet isn't the train wreck most people here make it out to be, but it's not exactly optimal either.

I've always said that the SP and iPad both represent half of a perfect tablet. The SP has the power, the software, and the flexibility, the iPad the design and UX. I'm still waiting for the tablet that combines the best of both.

The iPad Pro is Apple's chance to do this. They're already got half the equation down, they just have to soup up the hardware, throw in some bells and whistles, and get some higher end software developers on board. The only question is will they? If they don't, well...the SP line is improving by leaps and strides with every release. Whatever they don't do, MS will.

Wholeheartedly agree on every point, looking forward to see how this takes shape.

If this doesn't run both OS X and iOS. I see nothing Pro about an even larger screen iPad.

There's nothing which says Apple will actually call it the "iPad Pro" either. Everyone was convinced that they'd call their smart watch the "iWatch"...

No... Actually there was nearly no changes with iPhone 6 plus. All you get is screen can go landscape, keyboard adjustment on landscape mode and iPad-ish app. There is hardly any real changes that use the big screen. I highly doubt Apple will put some hybrid system on 12-inch iPad...it probably will just blown up iPad with blown up iOS... Unless Apple somehow able to bring multi windows mode with iOS 8.3 or iOS 9.

I have the 6 and I know the screen is bigger than what we had before, but c'mon it ain't that big (that's what she said!) to justify even split screen mode. Apple is so secretive about their software I wouldn't be surprised if they probably have at least an iOS version that has either a split screen or floating windows on it like OS X already. With the bigger screen of an iPad Air +/Pro it would make all the sense to do so. Who knows what will happen to iOS...

You don't drop this bigger iPad because you need two hands to hold it. The issue with it is how to use the touch screen without a third had. Seriously, there is an upper limit on the size of a tablet. Unless they invent a new kind of device, a desktop tablet that is used on a stand.

now.. I wonder what Cook will say to get people to fork over 800 dollars for a stretched out iPod Touch.

as for me, I will wait for fanless rMBP. Thanks

One hell of an expensive row of apps

It would be if people only look at the app icons on the screen! I can't believe how daft some people are, who think the screen size is all about what it shows on the main one!!

What about...

Web browsing on larger screen
Watching video on larger screen
Playing games on larger screen
eMailing on larger screen.... and so on??

But hey, it doesn't matter. All it matters is 1 extra row of apps, right?

They should make it 8.5 mm thin and have that contribute to a more durable casing. Heck maybe even put a bigger battery in it too.

One time I handed over my air 2 to a friend to type her email into and she said "oh my gosh I feel like I'm going to break this" she was scared to hold it!! I think Apple can make a fat device look sleek, especially if it feels like a strong, but portable tablet.

First of all, I think you will be disappointed and if I were you I would hold onto and use the iPad Air 2. Screen size increase - yes. Better speakers - yes. Battery life improvement - questionable. Starting Price - Even more questionable. Storage sizes - seems reasonable. #3 All iPads already have this.

Unlikely.

They will just use the iPhone design that was stretched out for the iPad, and stretch it out some more for the iPad "pro". Lack of imagination.

:apple:

Huh?

Iphone and iPad have never really had the same designs. Air 2 doesn't have the same cover glass with the smooth edges (believe me I wish it did).
