If you're talking about the App Store apps, yeah, it's pretty lacking. But good old fashioned Windows programs work fine on it, and there are a ton of them to choose from.
Course then you have to consider if those work well enough for you in a touch environment, but that's an entirely different conversation all together.
That's the problem: most of the traditional Windows programs aren't pen-input or touch-first. I could use OneNote as a whiteboard, but in many regards it isn't as feature rich as some iOS whiteboard Apps.
For example, many iOS whiteboard apps allow for the recording of a lecture, which as a teacher is extremely valuable as I can upload the video so students can review the material later.
Basically, I love the hardware of the Surface Pro 3 but hate the choice of software. I love the software choice of iOS but dislike the iPad hardware.
I really want the iPad Pro to close the gap between what the iPad line and the Surface Pro 3. Apple has nothing to really compete with it: the Surface Pro 3 is between an iPad and MBA. Apple needs a product that is between the two as well.
The thing about all the hate about the iPad Pro is that people fail to realize that Apple is loosing money to Microsoft in this category. iPad sales are flat lining while Surface sales have more than doubled to almost $1 Billion. Apple can't just ignore the strong demand for this category. It's a poor business decision. If Apple wants to improve its iPad sales, a competitor to the Surface Pro 3 would help out a lot.
