A simple diagram of what you would have to have is below:
Modem - Wireless Router - Wireless device (computer, iPod Touch, Xbox 360, whatever).
Typical routers either come with software to set them up or require you to log into them via a web browser using the router's IP. You shouldn't have to set up wireless access - at least, I've never had to. You should however have some sort of encryption scheme - WPA and WPA2 are the most common, and once you attempt to connect to the Internet through the router, whatever device you're using will ask you to enter the password you set via the encryption scheme.
Also, asking us to 'dumb down our words' doesn't really work, because to properly explain it some technical terms have to be used. If you get confused, grab a dictionary or go to Google and look it up. It'll be much faster and you won't run the risk of irritating someone.
