Has anyone been experiencing pop ups in safari? I can’t pin point when this all started but it generally occurs when I’m reading an article and then a version of the attached pop up appears. If I click close it takes me to another website and I have to close out completely to navigate back. Has anyone found a way to block this? I’ve cleared my history. It’s only for amazon stuff too.... very strange

Install an ad blocker pronto, if you haven’t already. AdGuard is a great piece of software; download, choose filters you want (especially pop-up blocking packages) and you should be good to go.

It’s a scam. I don’t know how they are doing it, but don’t fall for it.

As dannyyankou said, it may have more to do with the site you're on than Safari. Malwareish ads often make it through on certain ad platforms and end up getting served by reputable sites. I've encountered some like that on MacRumors before and on local newspaper sites, but usually I see these pop-ups on click-bait content farms with misleading headlines and crappy stories that require you to click 38 times to get through.

I’ve been getting these too. I like to use the Google app for short news stories and suddenly almost every time I would click to an article I got these. But it was defaulting to Chrome for the browser so I uninstalled Chrome. Now I choose Safari’s reader view for news articles and it stopped.... but yesterday I had another pop up again even with Safari and reader view and I was very disappointed. Any other suggestions besides AdBlocker?

I’ve had good luck with using uBlock Origin. Free.

I also have played with
Disconnect and Ghostery with good results. Scripting is the issue you are fighting and these extensions address various aspects of that. You can also run multiple extensions at the same time. You may see a slight slowdown at times when running several simultaneously, but I didn’t. I have to occasionally whitelist a site, but not often. Play with them. They are all good.

I also set my Mac’s DNS to use Quad9. 9.9.9.9. Www.quad9.net. That will stop any attempt by malware to redirect my browser or Mac to somewhere it shouldn’t be going to. Details are on the Quad9 website. Also free.

I learned most of this from following Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte’s “Security Now” podcast. I have almost no pop-up issues thankfully. Their show is very educational.

PS: Also use something like LastPass extension for your password management because with malware scripting, your passwords are a target. LastPass.com has the download. I’m sure there are others, but use something solid.

Good luck.

I have had that problem periodically on dvdreleasesdate.com when viewing from my iPhone. Quite annoying. I suppose it's one of their ad mechanisms. Doesn't happen every time though.
