Invest in a PB now, or wait??

Get a refurb iBook now. May I suggest the current rev. 14" iBook for $1099? It should easily last you for the next 2 years. By that time, the Intel PB will be at rev. B, possibly even C. Then just sell the iBook and get a PB.

How sure are we that there will be a last PPC update? There's no way Apple would hold on to these models for SEVERAL more months, right????? 😕

Not going to happen. PowerBooks are the premium line, that's why they have iBooks. That's business plain and simple.
 
That is one of the most uninformed comments i have seen "drop the price of the powerbooks 3-400 dollars" LMAO i had to laugh at that at how ridiculous it really is.

I love my new powerbook and i would gladly spend another 1400-1500 dollars if i needed another one

Premium as far as price is concerned, yes. But in power, the iBook is uncomfortably close, and for significantly less. If Apple wants to charge 1500-2000+ for the PowerBook, fine, but they are insulting their customers by selling them with its current specs. Of course, if I had just dropped close to 2k on a laptop rapidly becoming, dare I say it, obsolete, I would make up all the excuses in the world. 🙂

Lol I would not argue with that logic. For example I recently bought a pair of ridiculously expensive Ezra Fitch brand jeans. In terms of function, I could have bought a pair of Levi's at Walmart for $25. They both cover my legs the same. But in terms of sexyness, nothing even comes close. 😉 In other words, Apple could wait until January or even February and the PowerBooks would still sell like hotcakes. Insulting to practicality, yes; do I care, perhaps not so much.

No, it is more like paying 80,000 or whatever for a Viper that gets outperformed by a Toyota Corolla. You may like the looks, but the Powerbook gets the smackdown by even Dell when it comes to what matters more: power.

here in uk we pay nearly as much in £££££'s,

talk about the yuk end of the stick !!!

History would caution us to beware of false prophets, i'm alluding to the perceived easy application migration to a new intel chip. will apple hurry to produce a new lappie ? my guess is their priority will be the greater, more lucrative budget desktop market so when will we get an intel powerbook ?

On the power side, it's always been to the best of my knowledge that clock speeds between IBM/ Motorola V AMD/ INTEL chips is not a like for like comparison, something to do with instruction sets, not my field so can't be certain.

In any event, a powerbook is not cheap but you almost get what you pay for with a mac and for me, desktops are dead.

get yourself a powerbook, run it till it drops to get your moneys worth.

It would be foolish to rush any purchase right now until we know what happens next Wednesaday or even over the next 2 weeks, IMHO

IF the new PowerBook rumors hold true we'll see some very welcome
improvements AND price reductions on the current models making them
an excellent value.

For sure! As of right now, the iBook is the best value for a notebook in the IB/PB line. You'd be hard pressed to find anything else around $1200CAD for that kind of setup. The PB as of now are a bit pricey, but I would definitely wait until this week coming up.
 
*Sigh*, once again people are comparing 'value' with one number. PCs of the same price won't run as fast (even if they're 2-3Ghz), as the software is the main part of power transferal, just like the tires on a car. 😉
I wouldn't buy a pb right now (I don't have the money 😛). See what the 12th oct. brings.
 
I'm trying to imagine what it might be like to have
a 13" WS PowerBook HD with up to 2.5 GB DDR2 RAM, 128MB VRAM and a 100 GB HD with 16MB buffer with a backlit keyboard, 16X dual layer burner and a bluetooth Mighty Mouse 😀

Mac prices in general are too high. If you arnt able to get some kind of discount, then it is a rip off. Apple knows they are too expensive too, thats why they offer so many discounts. So a 3-400 price drop on a 10 month old machine? Not as ridiculous as you may think.

Yes, because iLife and that aluminum shell is totally worth it! 🙄

I think people just need to come to terms with the fact that the PowerBook is showing its age, and its specs do not warrant such a price.

Thats the point... who pays 2G's for a machine that is 10 months old. Thats absurd. eva01 just drinks the kool aid too much... you gotta be a smart buyer, otherwise your just a moron.

Yeah only a moron would buy a high quality, reliable computer over something cheap and unreliable 🙄
 
If you're actually earning a living from what you do with your machine
and using that machine helps you to be more productive and better organized with a minimum of hassle, then the expense is worth it.

If you break down the cost of your machine over 3-4 years and consider
how many hours you spend using that machine, then the cost is easily
warranted. That $2700 machine is only costing you less than $3.00 a day.

People like me spend more money on coffee and cigarettes each day
than I spend on new computer gear over the same time period.

YES PowerBooks are showing their age and THEY WILL be improved,
but they are also highly reliable & efficient workhorses for most users.

All of us here wish that Apple offered more BTO options for their entire
line-up, but it won't happen unless people take the time to voice their
opinions to Apple.

I would much rather see Apple stay with PPC architecture, but hopefully
the Intel transition will benefit all of us with the availablity of upgrades.

At this point all we can do is hope that Apple addresses these issues in their next offering.
