And the Plex apps on iOS and Apple TV are absolutely fantastic. If you want to marathon through a tv show / season, Plex is your best bet, automatically queues up and starts the next episode.
While I have used Plex it has some limitations that makes it less than optimal in some situations. First it requires a specific naming convention and file structure. It also doesn't play iTunes DRM'd content so you still have to use iTunes to play them.

If you don't mind those limitations Plex is a good alternative.

Well, yes. For DRMd content you're going to still need iTunes or an Apple TV.

But I've yet to see something match the feature set and interface of Plex. And most of it for free.

Overall takeover? What are you talking about?

Plex server runs as a service, and the interface is web based. It doesn't takeover the whole machine. Unless you need to interact with it all you'll see is a Plex icon in the menubar (and even that you can probably hide).

It always went full screen and for the life of me the only way to get out was stop the service.

Full screen in a web browser? Or an app?

That sounds like a very old version of the Plex media player on Mac. Past several years have been nothing like that. Actually for as long as I can remember the Plex media server has always just run as a service.

I've decided I cannot STAND that new TV app on my iPhone. It keeps pulling the stuff from my iCloud (that I don't want to watch) and not showing the things I have ripped from my DVDs at home (that I do want to watch).

Does anyone have a recommendation for a different movie/tv player that will work with what's on my phone (synced) and function more the way the "movies" app used to work?

Alot of people whom are like me do not want to have to use a billion different apps. They want to keep things streamlined with all content in one app. Apple needs to listen to the wants and needs of their customers and just go ahead and allow for people to rip their personally owned DVD collections into iTunes or the TV app. They need to also realize that a large volume of their users (like me) will just get really pissed off at having their choices and functionality both taken away from them and substituted with what Apple forces down their throats so they will say "Screw Apple" and find a functional but legally questionable way to do what they want to do. There are enough small companies out there to facilitate the "screw Apple and make it possible to do end run around them" which is what I do. If I want to do something and there are road blocks put out there by big companies that want to dictate to me I say "screw them" and find my own (questionably legal) way to do what I want to do. I encourage others to say "screw the big corporations" and do what ever they need or want to do.

That being said I am going to be going now because I have a TON of ripped DVD TV and Movie content to try to get across onto my 4th Gen iPad to watch. I advise others do the same.

Sincerely,
Wonder*Woman

In iOS 10.2, released on December 12, Apple introduced the new "TV" app, which serves as an Apple-designed TV guide that aims to simplify the television watching experience and help users discover new TV and movie content.

In the United States, the TV app replaces the standard "Videos" app and serves as a television hub on iOS devices, but it appears the new app doesn't work well with content that's been ripped from DVDs.

According to an ongoing discussion on Apple's Support Communities that dates back to December, some customers who have videos ripped from DVDs are no longer able to view them in the TV app. The same videos previously worked fine in the now-replaced Videos app. A user who is having issues describes the problem:Other iPhone users have been unable to sync home videos and other content to their devices with the current version of iTunes, receiving a message that movies or TV shows can't be synced because the Videos app is not installed.

Some users have been able to get around the problem with already-transferred videos by using the TV widget on their iOS devices, which apparently causes the TV app to display the ripped videos after the widget is activated. Others can get the ripped videos to play by setting the videos to be "Home Videos."

That the widget allows some users to access their videos suggests this is perhaps a bug that will be resolved in a future update, but it is not entirely clear what's going on with the TV app and content acquired outside of the iTunes Stores.

Affected users who want to get non-Apple video content onto their iOS devices will need to use a third-party solution like Infuse or VLC.
