I needed to travel from Seattle to Portland today, a downed tree led to me missing the train so I drove my Benz. I used 3 apps to navigate and find stuff - Google Maps, Waze, and the stock Maps apps. Pros and cons follow…
All three mapping apps are ridiculously fast now when compared to earlier iOS versions. Apple's variant of Verizon's AOL mapping data still is missing key bits (such as accurate POI locations - a location I navigated to was about 1/2 mile off, not much has changed there and I was safe in knowing where I needed to get to.
I'm pretty pleased with the interfaces of the Google apps, with a caveat - both Waze and GMaps caused my iPhone 6S+ to really heat up, so much that I had to quit the app(s) after about 10 minutes or so to keep the phone from cooking itself, while the return drive with Maps led to a much cooler iPhone.
I wanted to try Here! but IMHO the interface gets in my way; I'll be heading back to Portland early next week and will give it a try. My only tip here is if you're using GMaps or Waze to navigate, bring your charging cable - you'll need it!!!
