What if, in 10 years or so, you can no longer buy locks and keys? Over the past 10 years, I can't find any incandescent light bulbs anymore...

Many countries phased out incandescent light bulbs as a regulatory change due to their low energy efficiency. In the USA, that phase-out deadline was 2012-2014 according to the US lighting energy policy. I'd doubt that there would be a government-mandated switch from physical to digital locks any time soon.

The keys to my home are where I draw the line on relying on software. I'll take my chances with an old fashioned key and an old fashioned lock thanks very much.

I see a traditional lock as easily the most vulnerable. There's a $1 tool called a bump key that you can buy at any hardware store. It opens most home doors within a few seconds in the hands of a novice.

I wouldn't buy this smart lock specifically because it has that physical lock on it.

Do you realize you actual hit "post reply" on this? Had to be a mistake. Your lock/light bulb comparison needs work as well.

The sentence begins with a "what if"... I wasn't saying it was a news flash. I was more curious about what the earlier poster who drew a line in the sand, would do if that was not an option. I used the light bulb as an example.

Just because you can do something does not mean you should.

Creating an unsafe solution for a situation where a reliable and safe solution already existed, is lack of common sense.

SW controlled is not always the best solution.

I plan on going 100% HomeKit int he house I'm remodeling next month. Stuff like this scares me. Why can't apple just make all of this stuff?

Lights, Thermostat, smoke detectors, fans, blinds, locks, Sonos-esque speakers, etc. I want Apple to make all of this stuff.

And old fashioned lock pickers appreciate that.

As opposed to "new fashioned hackers"?

Funny thing: I've had key-based locks my entire life and never have any old or new fashioned lock pickers try to pick 'em. Makes me think we try to justify some purchases by spinning rare or odd scenarios that almost never happen in real life. Could they happen? Sure. But anything can happen in the imaginations of marketers trying to sell something.

Kind of late in the game for them to let people know this. Certainly they had access these past many months.

Why announce a bug during a beta that may be fixed by final release? That would only hurt their brand, and likely would go against the Developer Terms of Service for participating in the beta program.

The background noise and echo in that video left me with a headache, though. They could've done a better job at recording it.

So I'm curious (no snark or sarcasm here), what would folks recommend?

I want to be able to remotely lock my doors (sometimes I forget, ssssh) and "keyless unlock with a fob" sounds like a nice convenience feature.

This seems like a sponsored post / ad for an incredibly niche product. It certainly isn't a PSA.

This is a serious bug and affects other Bluetooth LE based apps. Basically any app that uses Bluetooth in the background or Bluetooth based location information or push notification is out of luck. "Usher security" app is used by thousands of users and would be affected by this bug as well.

Kwikset has announced that its Kevo smart lock's touch-to-open technology will only work on iOS 10 if the Kevo app is open and visible on an iPhone's screen, due to a bug related to Bluetooth LE peripheral mode.

Kwikset said it is working closely with Apple to support a solution that will restore the functionality as quickly as possible. iOS 10 will be publicly released later today, so the fix will likely be included in a subsequent software update.

In the meantime, Kwikset offers some temporary solutions for continuing to use Kevo's touch-to-open functionality:Kwikset said the iOS 10 bug does not affect the security of Kevo smart locks, while the sending, receiving, and revoking of eKeys is also not affected.

A bug in iOS 10? No way.... that's not possible, it's been carefully refined for a year now, and all the bugs were swept neatly under the rug... No bugs here ;)

Don't worry... they'll have this bug squashed temporarily right before iOS 11 comes out and releases the bug from it's cage.

It seems to also have broken my TouchID... was working before the update, now not working. All I get now is "FAILED Unable to complete Touch ID Setup. Please go back and try again". Anyone else?

Did you notice the keyhole in the picture. I use a Schlage Z wave lock. It's incredible what it can do. And it also has a key which I do carry with the other keys I carry. And I can give others their own codes to get it without having to give them keys.

Switch to Microsoft where serious bugs are less likely to occur.
