Kwikset has announced that its Kevo smart lock's touch-to-open technology will only work on iOS 10 if the Kevo app is open and visible on an iPhone's screen, due to a bug related to Bluetooth LE peripheral mode.

Kwikset said it is working closely with Apple to support a solution that will restore the functionality as quickly as possible. iOS 10 will be publicly released later today, so the fix will likely be included in a subsequent software update.

In the meantime, Kwikset offers some temporary solutions for continuing to use Kevo's touch-to-open functionality:Kwikset said the iOS 10 bug does not affect the security of Kevo smart locks, while the sending, receiving, and revoking of eKeys is also not affected.

I've had this lock for over a year and it's had its issues. I find that if I run up t the door it takes longer to recognize my phone. I bought the Kēvo plus to help this, which it didn't. But I had no issue unlocking my door tonight after the ios10 update. Work faster than ever.

Don't buy this lock, it is very easy to defeat, as you can see here.

And here.

And <sigh> here.

Overpriced nonsense.
It's like they should release a new version to fix this...oh wait https://www.macrumors.com/2016/08/30/kwikset-launches-2nd-gen-kevo/ <sigh>

I was a cop, and all I can say is a lock is there to slow someone down. Unless you have a house with no windows made of reinforced concrete, don't worry about how pickable you lock is. It takes more skill and effort to pick a lock than to smash your door window and just turn the deadbolt of the best lock on the market.

But you can certainly make it difficult to get in. Breaking windows makes noise, and most criminals won't use a glass cutter and be quiet about it. They'll probably use a bump key or similar, which is all you need to beat this lock. Getting a difficult to pick lock will discourage most, so t's worth it to pass this one by and buy a better quality one.

Actually, the SmartKey system is bump proof and pick resistant since it doesn't use traditional pins. It can be defeated through other means as documented on the web, although that does take some practice and isn't exactly quiet. In my neighborhood most burglars simply go house to house and find one with a door left unlocked, or a window left open during the summer... or perhaps a garage door that can be forced or was left open. I've also seen (and reported) people digging through recycle bins collecting paperwork on which to base identity theft upon. Speaking of which, more and more crime is virtual these days.

For what it's worth, I have two Kevo lock sets. They represent a promising glimpse into the future and offer up some true conveniences like unlocking the door without having to dig out keys, invariably placed on the same side of your person that you are carrying five bags of groceries. An additional plus with something like Kevo is I'm more likely to keep my doors locked when I'm home. August can even auto-lock after a set time delay.

On the downside, Kevo is often slow to unlock, or the app has crashed due to an update or restart. The motor is noisy, and it can't work just form the Apple Watch.

I'm tempted to switch to August, or perhaps install a commercial-grade RFID system with electric strike plates I can control through some intelligent scripting.

Just wanted to chime in as another Kevo user. I have two locks (front and back door), and I just recently got my old man one and installed it at his house a couple months ago. Both are generation 1 locks.

He and I both got an email from Kevo yesterday afternoon with the above video attached. I rolled my eyes, and he got a bit upset and worried that he wouldn't be able to get into his house. Long story short, I told him not to upgrade to iOS 10 until this had been sorted and I would see what I could figure out after I upgraded (today).

Well, after 2 hours to update my phone (6+) and almost 3 hours for my watch, I dashed off to his place to meet him for some very delayed happy hour drinks. It wasn't until after locking my door... and arriving at his house and letting myself in, that I realized I had ZERO problems using both Kevo locks with my iOS 10 phone. Honestly, I just completely forgot about it. Once I was there I did check to see if my Kevo app was open, but it wasn't as I closed pretty much everything before updating my phone.

And not to jinx it, but thus far I've had nothing but a better experience with the Kevo locks. I have yet to have a purple ring (which was a common thing), and I've only had to touch the lock once on each occasion to unlock it - versus 6 or 7 times, complete with obscenities in between red rings and using my middle finger on it.

In any case, your milage may vary but at least wanted to share my experience. And, I've been lurking here for more years than I can recall and know that my low post count will probably discredit me as a reliable source.

Now, excuse me while I get back to trying to figure out how I unlock my phone with this new home screen setup.

EDIT: Just for reference, I have a Kevo Plus but my dad does not.

[doublepost=1473826815][/doublepost]It just is a temp change in authenticating method for a while vs. a security flaw and inability to enter the house.

Did you even read the announcement?

They certainly have known longer than this morning. This is virtually guaranteeing that people will upgrade to iOS10 today and be blindsided. THAT will hurt their brand. Transparency when it comes to accessing one's house is very different than not being able to play Angry Birds due to crashes.

Well, I've installed iOS10 yesterday on my iPhone 6, and the Kevo lock works the same as before, no problems at all, and no need to keep the app open or anything. In fact, it seems to unlock even faster than before. I've tried locking and unlocking about 10 times during the day, it worked fine every time. Overall, iOS10 has been fantastic for me so far, other than the obscene amount of time it took to update the phone and the watch.

KEVO sent an email yesterday announcing that 10.0.2 had resolved the issue they reported earlier... though personally, I didn't experience it at all.
