Cars have had wheels forever, where's the innovation?!?!?

I know your comment is probably facetious, but the innovation in car wheels has been phenomenal if you get into the technical aspects. Crazy to think that 4 rubber patches (or only 2 or even 1) only a few square inches in area are responsible for all the traction and safety.

Apple this afternoon seeded the second beta of iOS 11 to developers, with the update coming as something of a surprise because betas normally come on Monday or Tuesday mornings.

iOS 11 beta 2 introduces a very long list of bug fixes to address issues that were discovered in the first beta of iOS 11, and registered developers should read over the extensive release notes to get an idea of what's been fixed.

The update also introduces many new bugs and highlights many known issues, such as an unexpected pop when restarting an iPhone 7/7 Plus or an SOS notification that goes out even when an alert is cancelled, so this is still not a stable beta and it should only be installed on secondary devices.

Along with fixing bugs and introducing new ones, there are some small feature tweaks and changes that are included in iOS 11, which we've outlined in the video below.

- Dock - Show Recents - There's a new option under General --> Multitasking that allows you to change the Dock settings on the iPad to disable the "Show Recents" option that displays your most recently used apps on the dock. With this disabled, only apps that you have added to the dock will show up.

- Do Not Disturb While Driving - There are now new Do Not Disturb While Driving options available in the Settings app and Do Not Disturb While Driving is enabled in this beta.

- Dictation - Support for Hindi Dictation has been added in beta 2 according to Apple's beta release notes.

- Control Center - There's a new option to disable Control Center within apps, preventing it from coming up when you swipe upwards. This option leaves Control center accessible from the Home screen. Bluetooth in Control Center works like the Wi-Fi option, disconnecting from whatever's connected rather than toggling it off.

- Safari - In the Settings app in the Safari section under Advanced, there's a new option to turn on experimental features like Constant Properties, CSS Spring Animations, WebGPU, Web Animations, and more.

- Files app - There's a new "Save to Files" Share Sheet option for saving photos, documents, and other files to the Files app. When using "Save to Files" a menu pops up that allows you to choose a location. Save to Files replaces Add to iCloud Drive.

Legacy document providers like OneDrive, Box, PDF Expert, and other apps are also now showing up as Locations in the Files app, but aren't using the new iOS 11 file extensions yet.

- Lock Screen - There's a new blur animation when pulling down from the top of the device to bring up the Lock Screen/Notification Center or when pulling up to access the Home screen again.

iOS 11 is currently only available to developers, but Apple has said it will make a version of the update available to public beta testers at the end of June, which is next week. We're expecting several more betas, and will likely see additional feature tweaks and changes ahead of the software's public release in the fall.

You're comparing apples and oranges here. But if i were to use your analogy, iOS evolution is like making crappier and buggier tires.

Curious to hear what’s worse ..

Hey, I'm not the original guy, but here are some things that make B2 pretty bad IMO.

- 3D Touch on apps on home screen either take too long to recognize or don't at all. I have lightest sensitivity enabled.
- Music widget on lock screen still buggy. Sometimes displays no music when there is music playing; widget UI still gets cut off)
- Choppiness in swiping left/right through home screens. Poor performance and sometimes jagged.
- Camera app or camera functionality within apps (e.x., Snapchat) will sometimes still freeze and not allow you to take pictures. Restart required.
- Having issues establishing Personal Hotspot between Mac with High Sierra B2 and phone (6S) with iOS 11 B2.

Those are just a quick few gripes. I'm not necessarily giving reasons in favour of the original poster's argument that this beta is worse, but I have had to restart my phone just as many times as I have on B1. For me the improvement in B2 was not substantial by any means and it is not ready for public release.

Hopefully that helps some users make a decision.

EDIT: Wrong word.

You must have gotten a bad download because so far I'm noticing marked improvement across the board in app compatibility, API functionality and even battery life. The control panel is still a mess but I guess more people need to complain before that gets changed.
Apps do not close properly and are still active in the background, using battery life and data. This is easily verified by watching the data transfer totals and seeing the battery drop off extremely quickly. Even if you don't see the app when double taping the home button.. it's still very much active. And even with background refresh off, they are active. Had to dump B2 for IOS 10 on my daily driver for now. Testing B2 on all my other devices gives the exact same readings. I've sent a ton of bug reports out in hopes they fix those issues before B3, though I doubt it as it is more or less memory control and that's fixed just prior to final gold release.

The only thing that has changed over the years is the wallpaper every year lol. Absolutely no design innovation. Same old same old, Apple is slacking!

You don’t go changing a classic design just for the sake of changing it. By your thinking, Porsche is slacking by not significantly redesigning the 911 in 50 years.

Just a heads up. On my iPhone 7 I can't downgrade to iOS 10. It fails to restore. Only restoring back to iOS11 works.

Anyone provide help on this?

A couple questions:
a) Does storage from iMessage attachments (photos, videos, iMessages themselves) count towards iCloud storage?
b) Would iMessages prior to the new iCloud capacity still go on the cloud? (For example, if I have a conversation that goes all the way back to 2014, would it retroactively go up on iCloud)?

For your first question I'd say it would seem so, for me at the moment it's using just over 600MB but thats everything, which leads me into your next question.
It seems to sync absolutely everything that's in your iMessage app. With the synced iCloud message data on my Mac I can scroll through and see messages from the beginning of 2015. So I'm pretty sure it's syncing the whole lot, which is what I would have hoped it would do.

I managed to downgrade on one of my devices without issue. I deleted the beta profile first, then turned off find my iPhone.

Then the usual, put phone into restore mode, connect to iTunes and when asked do the update and restore and it put iOS 10 back onto the phone.

Thanks for answering! I have about 25-35gb of attachments, yikes! My 200gb storage is running low as is, I'll have to get rid of some attachments. Sigh. Thanks.

Are you talking about hardware or software? If hardware: That is exactly what they envisioned, though. The software adapts. You don't need to add/re-arrange/remove buttons, the icons/ui changes. On the software-side, the os has improved dramatically. Maybe to as much as some hope. I am still missing an out of the box download feature for example. Don't understand why they haven't implemented it now with the new file app in ios 11. Glad it works with third party apps, though.

Yeah that’s why I upgraded to the 2TB plan, well not for iMessage, but my 200GB was rapidly running out with everything else. So I just bit the bullet, now I share it with my family instead of paying individually so it’s not too much extra in the end.

It’s a question I’ve asked myself (and some others) many times. A part of me still thinks it’s Apple and their worries over security. They seem perfectly happy to allow other apps, with their sandboxed access to perform these functions.

Yet Apple themselves will not do it. Is it because if Apple implemented downloading it would be more at a system level. Potentially opening up parts of the file system to those who like to get in and meddle (jail breaking and so on.) So will they do it once they are sure no-one can get past that layer of security? God only knows.

I had this same problem. I was able to install the 10.3.3 beta 4 ipsw though.

Haven't read the entire thread, but I've seen some people happy with beta 2 and others not. I was in the latter camp. Beta 2 was so much worse than beta 1 in my case. My dock would randomly disappear. Multitasking was bug central. It would sometimes freeze after closing two apps; would have to go back to home screen then go back in to multitasking again. Also there were many times it would automatically take you in to the app after you 'closed' it. I've been running Apple betas for yearsss and iOS 11 beta 2 has by far been the worst.

Didn't the iPhone come out in 2007, so how do you have messages to 2005?

Leaving wifi on improves location accuracy. Bluetooth is used to communicate with, for example, Apple Watch. So, in both cases you may want to disconnect from the current network or device but leave the radios on to do the various things they do. You gain very, very little in terms of reduced power usage by disabling these. I haven't turned either off for any reason other than trying to disconnect since the 5s.

Of course, YMMV and they may add or juggle options as the beta progresses. If you really don't like it, leave feedback for Apple. Telling a forum about it does little but is, admittedly, cathartic.
It's been a while since I've looked into it, but my understanding from a few years back was that being connected to a network was a lower power state than being disconnected and searching.

Because I’ve got hands like a pit shovel and I take a lot of (medicinal) morphine, it’s supposed to say 2015 :D

Though I might well have messages that old in there, I migrated all of my message history into my iPhone when I first got it. What can I say, I’m a hoarder.

But still no force/3D touch multitasking?

What do you mean by "No 3D Touch multitasking"?
You can press on the left edge and swipe all the way to the right to open the previous App in the multitasking switcher, or stop the swipe midway to access the multitasking switcher

Edit:
Or does it not work on the developer beta 1?
[doublepost=1498489205][/doublepost]
They need to allow more apps to be added to the dock if that recent apps toggle is turned off. I was sadly disappointed when I just tested it. What’s the point of disabling that if you can’t add three more apps permanently? It’s great that we have more dock apps now, but man I could really use one or two more slots!

I believe it is that way because if you decide to reactivate it the OS would need to remove those Apps from the Dock and put them elsewhere without your consent

Hey everyone, can someone beta testing 11 do me a quick favour? Take a look at your battery stats and check whether the 'Usage' and 'Standby' stats are ever identical. There's this horrific but that's been present through all of iOS 10 that when that happens, the phone is constantly drawing power and will die in less than 7 hours etc. Full details here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7692925?start=0&tstart=0

Hoping it's gone from iOS 11!

[doublepost=1499144452][/doublepost]I am not able to swipe up from bottom the Control Center when in an App. This is on iPad Pro 12.9”. I checked settings and it is on. Swiping up brings up the dock. Since it cannot bring both dock and Control Center up with same action, then how does one bring (overlay) Control Center when within an App?
