I don't see that coming. There might be a lightning - USB-C cable / Adapter whatsoever.
But imagine people just buying the iPhone Xs with lightning and then the new iPad (Pro) which does not work with lightning anymore. They would be pretty annoyed.

What about wireless charging for the iPad?

I just can’t see Apple adopting USB-C on the iPad while the iPhone still has lightning. And Apple makes more money off of lightning adapters, I’ll be shocked if this happens this year.

I guess they never did take the Kobayashi Maru. If it happens, what do you think of their solution?

Would it be possible for Apple to add USB-C and still maintain the lighting port? I just can’t see Apple separating the iPhone and iPad like that. I remember getting an iPhone 5 and then getting the iPad with a lightning connection just so I could share the few adapters that I had. Will we see a USC-C lightning adapter if this rumor is true?
I'd like to think a Pro level device could justify two ports, especially with one being Lightning and USB. Both ports would make the transition to USB-C a little smoother, allowing Apple to phase out Lightning after a year or two in favor or a second USB-C port.

I rather see them upgrading Lightning to match USB-C 3.1 in speed and then releasing some Lighting to USB-C / Display Port / etc. dongle.
I would love plain USB-C though.

ooooh I love what this hint hints at. Does anyone see a mouse pointer in iPads future?

IOS 13.

The present iPad Pro has 3 ports; 1. Lightening, 2. Audio and 3. Smart Connector. Plus Bluetooth which can be considered a virtual port.

Similar to the initial iPad Pro, this is going to be a bag of hurt. Best to wait for Gen 2 iPad Pro with FaceID. I like my iPad Pro TouchID Gen 2, great “computer”.

::SMDH:: It sounds like you guys want the iPad to be a MacBook. Just buy a MacBook.

Isn't that what people have been trying to do to it since they introduced it? Apple spent 25 years trying to remove a keyboard and a mouse from a laptop, and the first thing people do is build a keyboard for it and try to turn it back into a laptop....

I don't think this follows current Apple logic. In order to maximize revenue in the post-growth iPhone sales world, they will introduce the new iPad Pro with a new, proprietary Lightning Pro connector, incompatible with the old one because "innovation", and then provide inexpensive, $29.95 cables for Lightning to Lightning Pro and USB-C to Lightning Pro.

Oh, and the new iPad Pros will cost extra $300. Because again, "innovation."
No and no.

Honestly, this would be a welcome change. The iPad doesn't exactly have the marketshare of the iPhone, so it would be a logical place to start to test out how USB-C would work with iOS devices. Of course, if they decide to go all in on USB-C, we'll have a repeat of the 30 pin to Lightning days where people complain about their stuff no longer working. 1 cord for everything is nice though, it's a bit annoying looking at which end of a USB-C/Lightning cable is the proper end as it is. Apple hasn't exactly been doing much with Lightning these days anyways, iirc, the iPhone still only supports USB 2.0 speeds (at least on the X/8) while the iPad Pro's have 16 pins in the lightning port to utilize USB 3.0. Not sure if this will remain to be the case with the Xs though.

I mean, they already use one port for the MBP anyways, sooo...

Mac is dead for apple, the signs are obvious
Mac is a $25 billion a year business for Apple, bigger than iPad. Mini supposedly coming out next month and Pro shipping next year. Most powerful ever MBP and iMac shipped within the last 9 months. New MacBook Air replacement also due next month according to reliable leak publishers. Also, the next release of MacOS, Mojave, is looking like the best in many years.

Apple has never been more serious about the Mac, no doubt.

Looks like Tim Cook is at it again, corrupting Steven Job's vision. Soon they'll add mouse support and the dream of the iPad will be dead.

When is the last time Apple used a common connector shared with the rest of the market?

With a new Iphone design likely next gen, what better time to debut the USB-C on the phone.

Apple will convince Intel and the USB association to adopt Lightning connector for Thunderbolt 4 and USB-D. But Apple also realize that having the exact same connector as the rest of the world, or across all their own devices is not good for dongle business. So shortly after Thunderbolt 4 and USB-D appear, Apple will courageously introduce Mini Lightning :p

Could Apple not update their Lightning spec to support 4K? USB-C on an iPad raises more questions than it answers. It makes more sense than on an iPhone, especially if they are trying to make the iPad more "Mac" like. But then what?

Is this 4K display support just for movies or mirroring UI? If not that raises even more questions, such as:
  • Can you connect a mouse and keyboard to it?
  • Could Marzipan work both ways—not just making it so you can get iOS apps running on Mac, but get Mac apps running on iPad? This would enable apps to run in a mouse friendly way when connected to an external display.
  • Did Apple lie recently when they said that they weren't working on a Surface like product? They've lied and/or changed course in the past, such as the video iPod, iPhone denials, saying that an iPad Mini makes no sense, and I remember Phil Schiller ripping apart wireless charging around 2012 and saying it's dumb to need a pad and that makes it not wireless.
  • Will you be able to plug any USB-C device into it? Will it download drivers from the web? Will it provide power to connected devices? Having a USB-C port implies a lot of things should just work with a device to avoid customer confusion.
There are also some questions that I have yet to see talked about much regarding the hardware. Is it going to be a 3:2 display instead of 4:3 since it's growing in one direction only like the iPhone X? Whipping up some rectangles on my Mac right now, 16:9 would certainly be too wide and not fit the current rumors. But could they be putting a 3:2 4K display in the iPad Pro? 3840 x 2560? I know 2560 pixels is a number that Apple likes to use a lot. Interesting that if you take the current 10.5" iPad Pro, recalc the pixel width to only elongate it 3:2, and then scale that @3X you get 3753 which is darn close to 4K width.

It's too bad they can't wait for Micro USB-C. USB-A is the standard rectangle, while USB-B is the more square version that you often see on printers. USB-C is not a miniaturized version of other USB types, but a full fledged version. I've been hoping that eventually Apple would open source Lightning as USB-C Micro since it's stronger and thinner than USB-C, but I doubt that will ever happen. USB-C is just a bit big for such thin devices, especially if they get thinner in the coming years, though the trend has been stable to sometimes even getting slightly thicker so who knows.

I don't want a Macbook. A macbook does not have apple pencil support which is great for working with photos/videos.

You can smack your head all you want, a "Pro" device should allow some sort of connectivity. Arguing against it is just stupid, you're saying you want a device to do less than it can.
