When I use the app switcher to... well... switch between apps, it is much easier to switch if I don't have to scroll between 40 apps. It is not an OS thing, it is not a memory thing, it is a convenience thing.
Therefore I keep only those apps I need open, and kill the rest as the app switcher cannot determine by itself which I need.

Bug I noticed is that when I’m using the music app and just using the iPhone speakers to listen to music, the battery drains fast. It doesn’t happen if I listen via headphones or any Bluetooth device. Dropped 10% in less than 15 mins of only listening to music

Same here. I prefer one gesture for app switcher and control center. It's seamless on the iPad the way it is now.
Same here. I do not understand why this should work for all iPads while only future iPads are going to have a no-bezel- or minimal bezel- design. The right swipe-down control centre gesture does not work on iPhone SE for example. Do the same with iPads!

Ugh. I was hoping that the way it worked on the iPhone X was intentional to kill off the superstition of force quitting all of your apps.

There are times when apps need to be force closed. They can’t remove the function without forcing the user to completely reboot the system when an app freezes or has other issues. Adding the red dot tab/pause then swipe was needless code that didn’t need to exist.

I know some folks force close apps for no reason other than they like to but the ability to do so is needed. I’d like to see how detrimental closing an app is on battery life wen compared to not closing them. I have a feeling it’s negligent.

Because they were trying to quietly kill the stupid behavior where so many people repeatedly force-quit all their apps instead of like, looking at battery usage and turning off Background App Refresh on Facebook etc.

I’d like to see how much closing apps affects battery life. No one has shown there to be any significance in this. Why people care that other kill apps is weird.

I personally only kill apps if they’re having issues ie app freezes etc. outside of rebooting the phone (which I guarantee uses more battery life than restarting an app) there is no other way to fix a busted app.

Except a lot of apps have background usage when you don’t close them even if you have background app refresh turned off.

People on here always get triggered when someone mentions closing apps.

Agreed! I don’t get why people care so much.

Having tried keeping apps open for over a week and then religiously closing them. I found that force closing them had no detrimental impact (that I could measure without running a scientific benchmark). With two exceptions.

Facebook app.
WhatsApp

I no longer use Faceache app I use a Safari shortcut or Firefox instead. This improved my battery by about 10% at the end of any given the day and I spend less than an hour a day on faceache. It was and still is a battery hog. My wife still uses the app as it’s easier for her than a shortcut. But it kicks **** out of her battery even with background refresh off.

WhatsApp I found was doing something for long periods in the background if I didn’t kill the app. This is despite background app refresh being switched off. No idea what it’s doing and it still does it even on the latest version.

I’ve done all the troubleshooting for both apps like deleting and reinstalling etc. But they still kill the battery.

I’ve yet to see any proof that force closing apps is detrimental. All people tout as proof is the email response from Craig Federighi when asked about it.

But until someone shows me a scientific benchmark from a reputable source (by that I don’t mean some dodgy sped up YouTube video showing two phones and a stopwatch!) then I will continue to kill certain (read most) apps. When I’ve finished using them.
