Hi,

Any speculation on as to whether Apple is going to make major iPhone software changes in iOS 12 or 13?

This is not intended to insult Apple by the way, and I have an iPad Pro with the apple keyboard, Apple Pencil, AirPods and an iPhone 6S as a backup phone for overseas trips...but instead of the iPhone I’m using the Galaxy S8. And the reason that I’m using the S8 is because (and this is just my opinion), Apple isn’t innovating as much as they used to.

When Apple released the iPad Pro 10.5 that was almost an instant buy for me and I ditched my laptop as a result. One huge reason was iOS 11 and the multi-tasking and all the other improvements. I came very very close to getting the iPhone X, but aside from the new design, the software just felt old to me and in need of evolving. IMHO the home screen needs to evolve past a static grid of icons. In general as a starting point I think they need to create an app drawer, put widgets on the home screen, and revamp notifications (grouped notifications). I do not think they necessarily need to copy Android, but I do think things need to be updated.

Thoughts?

I don't think the home screen is going to change at all at least the next 5 years. Not in any of the ways you describe at least. I also personally don't think it needs to really.

The home screen is an app drawer. And widgets have a dedicated page. Though I'm glad you at least made suggestions instead of just writing "It's so outdated, fix it" without explaining what that means.

Honestly, I never really use the widgets since they are on the left side. I think home screen being an app drawer works better on the ipad where there is more space. I did take another look at the X today and it does seems a little more spaced out than on my 6S though.

iOS has essentially been the same since it’s inception, as has Android.

This “Apple is no longer innovating line is coming from people who prefer Android nowadays and that’s fine. Android has improved drastically over the years bringing it up to par with iOS. Android feels like a more constantly evolving platform due to the numerous devices using the platform each doing their own thing.

I think for the most part Apple are taking a “why fix what’s not broken” approach. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel when our current one gets the job done.

I like using the widgets on mine by swiping left to get to them.

I wouldn't want Apple to change anything about its layout of apps, use of folders or home screen - it's still fantastic to me. I'm enjoying my X a lot more than I ever did the Galaxy S8.

I’m thinking iOS 12 will actually be combatibke and formatted for the iPhone X. Obviously 11 was not.

Speak for yourself.

The new style control centre is clearly designed with the iPhone X in mind. The experience feels much more natural than it did with my 6S Plus.

Of course, the experience will only get better but the current experience is already great.

My guess is iOS 12 will be a focused on refinement and bug fixes. The gesture for reaching the Control Center by the top right and battery percentage are at least two items for reconsideration.

I think we will see some major changes to iOS 12 focused on the iPhone, but improved notifications are the only thing I agree with you on. Why do we need an "app drawer"? Just to access the apps that are already right there in front of you? I don't get the reasoning behind wanting this. Your phone is communications tool and place to use your apps, changing this is just change for no reason. Home screen widgets? We already have widgets, right there to the left. Do you really need to see a weather icon every second we open our phone? Or have a music widget showing the artwork of the last song we listened to? Again, change for the sake of change. It doesn't add any value. I think there are definitely some ways they can improve the home screen experience, but I am just not seeing it yet. It seems like people just want things to look different, then you'll get bored of it, and want something else. This is a computer, use it. Don't just stare at your home screen looking at a pretty widget.

EDIT: Android has done nothing impressive over the years as well. One of Oreo's major features was literally app badges. I think this idea that Android has been super innovative is a joke.

Haha that was the only different thing about it. iOS 11 is more of a beta for the X and more of an OS for the 7,8. 12 will be optimized for the C finally

I would think IOS 13 should be a big change. I mean logically it does to me because the X is a change from the way we have always pressed the home button. I figure there must be a big change in the interface. I just hope they change it and its "revolutionary" or else please don't change it. Like if it becomes like android with an app tray I'd be pissed.
