I can confirm that he IS correct and you aren’t. Scroll down to the bottom of your VM and you’ll see a section for blocked messages. If you tap it you’ll see all the blocked numbers VMs to you, if they chose to leave one.
you don't know what you're talking about. I'm always right. that's just a fact.

It's about ****ing time. This isn't magical but is welcomed, and all the other new features are great. For once I actually care about iPhone/iOS updates, plus the Mac Pro, and it feels good. Maybe I'll go back to being an Apple fan (see signature).

I implemented this feature a long time ago by making a silent ringtone my default ringtone, then giving each person in my contacts I actually want to hear from their own audible ringtone. In the infrequent case I'm waiting to hear from a number I don't know that would otherwise be silenced, I temporarily switch from a silent ringtone to a real ringtone.

The new feature would be a lot simpler though, and would not require me to maintain my silent ringtone file.
I tried this, problem is it's too annoying to manually edit all the contacts, and the calls still block your screen. Also, I want my phone to buzz, but maybe a custom no-op buzz pattern would solve that.

Wow for me not usable at all. How do couriers contact you guys? In my country by phone. Also for example when an Uber calls you it will too send it to voice mail. ..food delivery? Same thing.
SMS. Or if this feature were easy to toggle on when you're expecting a call (control center option, maybe it's there?), that'd be nice.

No. It's all or nothing currently/unfortunately, but hopefully eventually will work that way as most of us with dual sims such as personal/business would most likely find it a very useful setting for one line but not the other.

Ok so that’s just silly. Hope they figure it out

We need an option to block callers with wildcards. There are daily junk calls yelling at me in Chinese coming from the same fake exchange in Los Angeles. 310-195-xxxx. 195 is not a valid exchange and the last four change daily, so its a computer bot spoofing a number. But since exchanges don’t start with 1 in the USA, I would like to blanket block 195.

Give us more options, Apple.
`THIS

Love this! And I hope they mean exactly what you say (if # is not in contacts list)... not just the caller ID displaying "unknown caller". Since telemarketers mostly use fake phone numbers, caller ID won't appear as "unknown".Hopefully that makes sense, I've been waiting for
^Exactly. I don't give a damn if Caller-Id says "Unknown Caller" or if the phone number is two digits off from my own (which it usually is ) .. I do -not- want -any- phone number that isn't in my contact list able to call me, nor do I want them to have an ability to leave a voice message or anything else.. Screw that .. I want zero communication with such outfits.. Apple/Google/Telcos could end all this garbage overnight but instead they are complicit in our ongoing harassment. Shame on them all!

I think Uber and Instacart use text messages which I’m assuming still go through.

huh? big whoop, this is not new, lol,
I have already been doing this in iOS 12 using Do Not Disturb.
You just have Do Not Disturb turned on with Silence Always and Allow Calls From set to All Contacts.
That does the same thing!
So they added a toggle, but can you set that toggle to be off during certain times of the day? if not then it's actually less of a feature than what I'm doing. I leave a couple hours completely open after 9pm.

Not impressed.

Do Not Disturb blocks all app notifications. So it's very different.
[doublepost=1559976480][/doublepost]Does this function block hidden numbers too?
Can someone test it?

I would just like to be able to unlock my phone and use it while an unknown caller rings...

Dumb question but does the blocked call still show up as a missed call?

If not, and they don’t leave a voicemail, there’d be no way of knowing you might have missed an important call.

You can do this in iOS 12. Turn on Do Not Disturb but then use the setting where people in your contacts get through.

I still think the ultimate solution is going to be Siri. Let her screen phone calls. If someone isn’t in my contacts list, Siri talks to them to find out who they are and what they want, give me a text notification allowing me to accept or decline, and allow the caller to leave a message if it’s not a robocall. Would also be useful for if you have Do Not Disturb enabled, or if you’re sleeping. Siri can screen those calls letting the caller know you’re sleeping/busy and ask if they’d like to leave a message, or if it’s an emergency and they need to get through. It’s going to be pretty sweet when Siri handles that for me. It would kill every robocaller over night. I’m still happy enough with this temporary patch, though. These robocallers ruin my iPhone experience 2-6 times a day even with RoboKiller installed. Even typing this, I had one come in spoofed from my area code. I’m so sick of it I wanna throw stuff.

Oh no, lucky you don't HAVE to use it then. What would YOU like them to do?

That's actually an awesome idea, roboanswer the robocallers lol. I think google's demo last year with their voice service booking a table shows its possible.

Huawei has something like this (in China at least) but way smarter. People report the kind of phone call it is (things like, delivery, spam, scam, estate agents) and you can block different types of calls with different confidence levels.
We have Trucaller to do this.

some people like to allow notifications from other apps to come through though. ;)

Ahh, yes. Fair point. I uninstalled the only two apps I used that gave notifications – Facebook, Twitter - when my conversations I was having with my speaking voice started showing as ads in newsfeeds. lol

Okay can someone clarify what this actually does? From what I've understand it blocks numbers that aren't in your contacts.

I can already do this in iOS 12. I set Do Not Disturb to allow calls from "All Contacts". If someone calls that isn't in my contact list it goes straight to VM. If it's important for example someone I know got a new number they can leave a VM and I can call them back. The only downside with DND is that it silences notifications for all text messages regardless if they're in contacts or not. The notification will appear in the pull down menu but it won't pop up or chime.

In the Phone section of the Settings app in iOS 13, there's an interesting new toggle called "Silence Unknown Callers," which appears to do exactly what the name suggests. With this feature enabled, calls received by people not in your contacts list seem to be sent straight to voicemail.

It sounds like this may be exactly the feature I have been asking for. I want to block anything not in my address book, period. If this works, I'll be more thrilled about this than any feature in iOS that has ever been introduced to the best of my recollection, and I go back to the iPhone 3g days.

I've done this as well, the problem is it blocks all notifications for all applications. I don't want that. I am mainly concerned about phone calls as they are most disruptive. Ideally I'd like to block unknown text messages as well.

That's a huge downside for me and prevents me from using that method. I want text message and app notifications. The iOS 13 implementation will give me that.

Agreed that it's annoying but it's my only option at the moment to keep my sanity. I get at least two spam calls a day... I rarely get two legitimate phone calls a day lol. Now will this block spam texts as well? I've been getting at least one or two a week so far.

As to other notifications I'm happy they don't vibrate or chime my phone. I don't need Facebook telling me that I have two unopened saves or some game telling me they're having a sale. Of course I could go into my notification settings and fix this as well.

Don't need to test it. It blocks calls unless the number is in your contacts. So yes, it blocks hidden numbers.

I would just like to be able to unlock my phone and use it while an unknown caller rings...
You can do that already. Double press the power button (well, I have a 6S) and it dumps the ringing call to voicemail. You can use your phone as you wish. With every mobile provider I've ever used you can even disable voicemail if you want callers simply to be cut off.

Dumb question but does the blocked call still show up as a missed call?
Yes. It hits your phone very briefly (otherwise how would the phone deal with it?) then dumps it to voicemail. You get a missed-call notification.

I'm sure things could be done to fix or at least improve the situation but I'm not sure Apple or Google are complicit LOL. Apple and at least the Android division of Google can only do so much at the hardware side. Now I'm not sure about Google's advertising division if they're involved in spam calls. The telephone companies could do something but even they have limitations as to what they're allowed to do. There was talk of blocking automated SMS messages in the USA till they figured out that many legitimate businesses use these.

It sounds like DND except it doesn't effect other applications. I hope it does something with text messages but maybe that's asking too much.

I hear you. I do too. I get a lot of calls that start with the same six digits so they'll appear local but they're spam. There is an app that will let you specify to block calls that start with digits you configure but I didn't buy it because I wanted to see what iOS 13 was coming up with.

It's even easier with iOS 12. Just swipe left on the notification and either turn them off for that app or manage them for that app.

I've downloaded several apps to include ones with monthly subscriptions that claim they can block spam calls. None of them worked. They try to match the incoming number with a spam database but the problem is spammers spoof the number. They use numbers that belong to regular people. IMO this should be illegal but it's not. I occasionally get the ones where they first six digits are the same as mine but that's probably about a third of them. Often it's 877 or some randomly generated area code and number.
