So if someone says they're not having an issue that makes their post immature? Seriously? You're lookin at this in a very shortsighted view. Firstly it doesn't do anyone any good (other than Apple haters) to hear only negative responses or from people who are only having problems. That puts out a false message saying that the issue is widespread when often it's not. It's important that people without issues post so others with issues can narrow down the problem. I could also be certain apps that are draining the battery, or a dozen more reasons but negative-only posts are not helpful.
You completely misread and misinterpreted his post. He didn’t say what you saw. You need to read his post again.

No issues at all with my 12 Pro Max on 14.2.1. Battery life is amazing...

Today for example, a lazy sunday at home with very little phone interaction, pulled off the charger at 7:30am, it is now 3:30pm and the battery life is at 99%.

No problems to report on 14.2 on my XS. Battery life still about the same as previous iOS versions.

I’m wondering if it’s related to cold weather

What I mean is that it’s causing the battery readings to go crazy. All the way back to the iPhone 4s I’ve had this issue, it could be 20 degrees outside and the percentage would suddenly drop dramatically or the phone would turn off, and when I turn it back on it would jump back up.

Keep your phone in an inside pocket closet to your skin so it stays warm.

Lithium batteries in phones have lousy cold temperature performance.

Users on the Apple Developer forums and Reddit are widely reporting that iOS 14.2 causes severe battery drain issues.

iOS14.2on-Phone-Feature-2.jpg

Symptoms of the problem include rapid battery drain and longer charge times than usual. Some users are reporting that their devices are losing over 50 percent charge in less than 30 minutes, and seeing large drops of around five percent within minutes of normal use.

The issue seems to be software-related because multiple users are experiencing battery life sticking at a high percentage before dropping, as well as seeing a sudden gain in battery life after restarting their device.

The affected iPhones all appear to be slightly older, such as the iPhone XS, iPhone 7, iPhone 6S, and first-generation iPhone SE. The 2018 iPad Pro running iPadOS 14.2 also seems to be affected.

iOS 14.2 and iPadOS 14.2 arrived just two weeks after iOS 14.1 and iPadOS 14.1, in the second major updates to the iOS and iPadOS 14 operating systems that were released in September. The update included new emojis, Intercom, AirPods Optimized Battery Charging, People Detection, and new wallpapers.

There are no new reports suggesting that the battery issue was fixed in iOS 14.2.1, which sought to address bugs with MMS messages, made for iPhone hearing devices, and a significant issue with screen responsiveness on the iPhone 12 mini.

The third developer and public betas of iOS 14.3 and iPadOS 14.3 have already been released, so it is possible that Apple may fix the problem in that update. The third major update to iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 brings support for Apple ProRAW, as well as refinements to Home, Health, and Weather.

Users with older devices may wish to hold off on updating to iOS 14.2 if they have not already done so, until the issue has been fixed by Apple.

I am absolutely experiencing this on my iPad Pro 12.9. I was on for 30 minutes this morning checking email, FB and Twitter and battery was down 50%. This has been a daily occurrence since the last update.

iPhone 8 iOS 14.2 here, battery is better than in iOS 13 but not as good as iOS 14.1
Not terrible but could be better

So is this 9 phones out of millions of phones with this is issue?

This battery drain issue have happened many times over the years, it could easily be avoided if Apple didn't release major software versions so often. If someone from Apple management is reading this: Please return to just macOS and iOS (make Apple Watch and Apple TV able to run iOS), so you only have to maintain two operating systems, and only release major versions every 2 years instead of annually, so beta testing of all new software versions will happen for at least 2 years for each device. Not a single serious customer will mind that. People don't want to deal with all these bugfests every year, we want to use our devices, not replace them annually. People want to use quality hardware with quality software. Also please start to consider supporting all devices with software updates for minimum 10 years or even 20+ years. Your hardware is more than capable, if you re-hire Steve Wozniak, you will see what I mean. I'm serious. That will change the tech industry, and it's a good way to show your environmental friendliness. For example, there is no reason an iPhone 6s won't be able to run iOS 24 or later, if you just remove all the bloatware and useless features from your code.

Not entirely true, as hardware keeps being improved. It's not a software issue that your Mac Plus of 1984 can't run Big Sur.

As for the drain, I would suspect that it is a runaway process busying a core at 100%. A common "feature" on both MacOS and IOS, and the kind of bug that Apple really doesn't pay any attention to. They have given up about fixing bugs.

I haven’t seen any issues with my 12 pro for my 2018 iPad Pro
Unfortunately I have on my 2018 ipad pro. I used to do lots on including my morning surfing and afternoon and evening videos in iTunes and streaming apps and usually had over half left now a morning of surfing deplete my iPad down to 30-40%. Necessitated a daily midday charging back to 100%. Evening videos often deplete me to 20-30 % left. Have noticed this since the betas. Not improved in official 14.2 nor the official 14.2.1

Reactions: Just sayin...
I think with more people complaining across the web, attention is now focused where it wouldn’t normally be.
I was aware of the issues even with the 14.0 through 14.2 beta and found this a common problem each new iOS. Until now sorta lived with it via a midday change and of course overnight. But it’s getting annoying not critical. Saw this and found it interesting that 2018 iPad Pro seems to be one of the devices affected

No problems here. iPhone XS

Lots of anecdotes != quality data

It's the problem with 'news' and information spreading quickly online - not to mention reporting/confirmation biases. It takes a week before the truth is finally distilled, and most of the time it is a 'non event'.

A friend has severe drain on their 1st gen SE. I assumed it was WhatsApp background activity from the battery charts they shared.

I've been noticing odd slowness on my SE 1, as well as what seem like hangs. I'm moving up to a 12 mini after xmas so not a big deal to me.

Battery life is fine, though I do notice my phone is a bit warm. It is winter though, so maybe I didn't notice when it was warmer.

I use an old iPhone SE (1st gen). I changed the battery a year ago and it works just fine. Last more than a day if I don't use it often.
What I noticed is getting really hot when I try to run a specific game that has ads (Brutal Street 2). Since I use Adguard DNS, it blocks ads in games and since it goes to 0.0.0.0 devs might be upset.

A WhatsApp video call (LTE) can drain considerably the battery.

So I guess it depends on the software being used.

Surprising they aren’t finding these bugs during the beta period. Then again my iPhone 6S Plus Pro Max isn’t having these issues, maybe it’s related to a handful of 3rd party apps?
