iOS 14.4 ― Bug Fixes, Changes, and Improvements

The point is not the overall duration, it’s the difference between the two versions. From 14.2.1 to 14.3 I noticed an improvement in the battery, from 14.3 to 14.4 not only the battery got worse but it is also less consistent. Within the same day it passes from a standby consumption of 0.4%/h to 1%/h without using it.

Aside from the academic interest, who cares? There are lot of iPhone 7 users out there who would kill for 4 days of standby power.

My Home on off switches keep freezing randomly in control center like for instance, it shows my living room light as on when it’s not and the button doesn’t respond when tapping it. Only a reboot fixes it

I charged my iPad Air to 100% last night… My iPad discharged down to 10% over the night with absolutely zero screen time and nothing running in the background.. Seriously, using nothing drained the battery down to 10% over night.

What did this update break…?

I noticed that consumption drops dramatically if I switch to airplane mode for a moment, on-off-on, until some notification arrives that activates the modem. The difference is huge, from 0.8-1% for hour to 0.5.

Yes I’ve seen this to. It’s also replicated in the Home app where devices’ status are not updated accordingly.

Can't say about the XS but I am not seeing an issue with this on the 11 or 12 ProMax.
Hope you figure it out.

Something is running in the background. Has to be. Check if photos are syncing or any other iCloud sync activity may be hung up. Also perhaps a mail account is hung up trying to sync.

Battery life is worse than 14.3 for me too. My iPhone 12 drains so quickly now.

I send an iMessage from my 12 ProMax and it shows up an Unread on my IPP 11, Badge, Notification and all.

Just noticed something similar on mine. Read loads of iMessages on my phone and they don’t get marked as read on my watch and vice versa.

Seriously, this software is getting worse. What a sack of ****.

I’ve restarted my devices again. Fourth time having to restart my watch today. So many niggling little problems. Really losing my patience with it now.

Update: I’ve been complaining about this update for my 2020 11” Pro when using it with either the Magic Keyboard or Magic Trackpad 2 + BT keyboard. So for ~24 hours I’ve tried using my iPad without these accessories and it’s been more or less problem free and the battery life seems on par with 14.0.1 (prior version). It’s still too early to tell, but my freezing issues may have been due to these accessories since trackpad has been horrible with both Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad 2 immediately after updating. Still very disappointing since I just bought the Magic Keyboard for $199 and I can’t really use it now 🙁

Looks like you’re at least on WiFi. How about cellular. Both actively use battery.

Performance wise seems fine. Apparently the "stutter" issues being reported seem to be with the iP12 series. I do believe the battery may have taken a hit. While not drastic, it does seem to be less than previous versions (including 14.3). Went direct from 14.3 OTA with no resets or restores. Otherwise seems to be ok.

Yeah I saw that but there has to be something running to use battery. If not the display then there is some process using battery. I know I have seen iCloud or mail causing drain randomly or even something weird with "Siri" showing as using tons of battery before even though hadn't used Siri that day. Point being something in the background must be doing something to cause that much drain while idle. Perhaps closing all apps and rebooting will stop whatever it is. Or signing out of iCloud and back in. iOS seems to be getting more weird lately with different extreme issues for some and no issues for others. 😕

I am still firmly in the camp that these issues are the result of individual setups/app configurations. I never have these stutter/lag problems or these massive battery drain problems (at least on late betas or released software). Even on earlier betas, it’s usually only the accelerated battery drain.

Right note my 12PM is smooth as butter and experiencing no battery issues at all.

In my case battery drain was a settings issue. I set it at 4G in mobile network settings and had massive drain. After I set it to 5G auto it disappeared and now with 14.4 my battery was even better. Now my drain is about 3% at night.

I charged my 12PM to 88% Friday morning and with 9 hours screen on, 2 hours of background I am at 5% battery left 52 hours later.

Not using mobile data or anything. i tried putting airplane mode on and off and that did not seem to work.

So I did a complete reset and it seems to be back to brilliant battery life again. 😊
Never had this happen before, so it was very concerning!

I concur. I do not remember the last time my iPhone stuttered.

I've never had problems before, and I've been using iOS devices since the beginning. I only use the built-in apps, with exception of YouTube.

Sometimes things just happen, no fault of the user. Just like with macOS updates.

Sometimes things do just happen, but it’s probably not as common as you think. Apple has a billion iPhones deployed and I would guess that most of these issues affect less than 1/10 of 1% of those users (or fewer)(still a large number, admittedly). I would bet that the number affected who have “plain vanilla” setups is far smaller.
