Beginning with iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5, users will be able to keep track of select non-Apple-branded products like Beats headphones and upcoming Belkin wireless earbuds using Apple's built-in Find My app.

In preparation for the launch of this feature, Apple has made a new "Items" tab visible by default in the Find My app in the third beta of iOS 14.5 seeded to developers today. Previously, this tab was only accessible by toggling a developer setting or by entering the URL scheme "findmy://items" in Safari on an iPhone or iPad, but it now appears automatically for all users running the latest beta.

Apple's long-rumored AirTags item trackers are expected to be managed through the "Items" tab in the Find My app as well.

Similar to Tile, AirTags are expected to help users keep track of their personal belongings, such as their backpack or luggage, with users receiving a push notification on their Apple devices when they are separated from a tagged item. AirTags are expected to support Ultra Wideband for improved location accuracy, with helpful augmented reality functionality through the Find My app for locating misplaced items.

Tile is reportedly planning its own Ultra Wideband item trackers to rival AirTags.

The entire AirTags and 'Find My Items' fiasco really seems to me like a product that has internally had a lot of problems and delays. I would bet they are pushing to bring this feature to third parties to prevent more lawsuits of anti-competitive behavior.

I'd bet anything Tiles has spent a fortune and tons of time to get ready for an anti-trust lawsuit, and it’s all going to be wasted when Apple makes Find My an open API for partners.

I don’t think it was the original plan to open this to 3rd parties, but Apple ran the analysis and the revenue and lock-in was not worth the anti-trust headaches.

The api has been available (in “preview”) for quite awhile. So presumably Tile has been aware of it for quite awhile.

I hope by now that people realize Apple releases things alongside major “.X” updates like this. AirPods Max has a version of software released with it too I think.

AirTags definitely are coming when this version of iOS drops.

Can’t to help but to think of all the effort of making airbags works but Bluetooth lets to suck on Macs since Big Sur was released!

I’m not seeing the utility of this technology. I feel like I am missing something. I received a $70 tile last year as a gift and haven’t had to use it once. Can someone please give me the TLDR version of where the utility of this tech is going?

Find your lost or stolen bike, find your lost or stolen luggage, find your kid’s stroller in the pile at Disneyland, find your lost Apple TV remote, your lost AirPod case, etc. etc. I will certainly put one on my bike and throw them in suitcases the next time I travel.

Honestly what’s the point in this, it shows on the map a whole block of houses if something is missing you can’t knock on every house, also how often does anyone loose something and needs an app to find it just don’t get it

But it just shows an area on the map like with other things you might know what area it’s in but it doesn’t give exact location

They’re supposed to release tile-like products in the near future which are a lot more accurate. Doesn’t just rely on GPS
