It will give an exact area. The product isn’t out yet. That’s what the UWB chip is for. It will be ultra-precise.
The screenshot looks like a map, I had a mac stolen and it showed an area and the police said you can’t go to every house and check so don’t get it

Can someone explain how airtags with U1 chip work I thought the U1 chip needs to be near the phone so if something is lost how would it ping the phone; would it use gps? Ultra wide band only works close to a device

Honestly what’s the point in this, it shows on the map a whole block of houses if something is missing you can’t knock on every house, also how often does anyone loose something and needs an app to find it just don’t get it
I applaud your infallibility :) Jealous, actually.

Should you misplace your keys, your phone can make them ring. Misplace your phone? The keychain can make the phone ring. Best use for me has been determining if something was left in the office or lost at home.

I’m not really sure, but it may add a further distance for the devices. And yes, the U1 Chip has to be near a phone so that might be a problem with Apple Airtags. And I don’t really see the point of Airtags when you can just ping your devices in the Find My App.

Exactly I don’t get it and don’t see how these will be helpful at all, they would have to be gps like tile and they don’t show you exactly where anything is, if someone say stole your bike you might see the area but not exact; and if it’s something in the house you need to find well I’m sure you don’t need technology to locate it, I’ve never lost my keys or phone in my house lol

But it just shows an area on the map like with other things you might know what area it’s in but it doesn’t give exact location

Have you ever used find my to locate your position? It most definitely gives you a better location than a block of houses. More like A house. The world is big. The size of a house is small. Walk around a park and lose something an you would appreciate the size of a house as opposed to the size of the park.

Airtags are for non Apple devices.

But my issue is how does the ultra wide band help as it only works when the phone is next to something, how would airtags work with u1

No how would that work

Apple has provided an SDK and instructions on how people can create products that integrate into the system. They show up in the new tab. Generally they must support Bluetooth, and they can support UWB for more precise location.

Not sure what screenshot you are referring to, but “find my” definitely gives much more precise location than just an area - it will show you not only a specific house, but what part of the house. And for these new devices that support UWB, it can tell you down to a few inches where the device was seen.

Nope uwb only works near the device so unless it’s near it then it’s kinda useless

I'd bet anything Tiles has spent a fortune and tons of time to get ready for an anti-trust lawsuit, and it’s all going to be wasted when Apple makes Find My an open API for partners.

I don’t think it was the original plan to open this to 3rd parties, but Apple ran the analysis and the revenue and lock-in was not worth the anti-trust headaches.

I gotta agree with this interpretation. This is far more valuable to Apple as a feature that works with hundreds of different products with built in tracking than trying to sell you $79 Apple branded tags.

“AirTags” is going to end up just being a technology like AirPlay and AirPrint that any third party can integrate into their products. Tile is going to be both relieved and feeling dumb for going CODE RED over the last year anticipating Apple hardware and being Sherlocked. They’ll just release their next gen Tile with AirTag support and may end up being the AirTag market leader given their experience and brand marketing in this field.

airtags are using Bluetooth right besides U1. If that’s the case then I don’t think you should have anything to worry about especially considering only the 11 and 12 lineups have U1 compare to every other iOS/iPadOS 14 device

but yeah U1 Chips have to be close to a U1 device like the HomePod Mini in order for it to work

Eh What?????

your telling me a service designed for Apple devices like this is not for Apple Devices...

Yeah, Apple Airtags seem to be having certain issues.
What issues? I don't even know what AirTags are. Can't seem to find it on the Apple Store.

It depends on which police. Where I am from we have to have "Reasonable Cause to Suspect" the device is in there. And Reasonable Cause will depend on the individual's interpretation. Saying that, we do it all the time, as long as the location isn't bouncing around, there is enough to go in.
