Unfortunately there are still some year-long bugs in iOS and iPadOS:
E.g. in iPadOS Safari not only shows a different number of favorites in portrait- und landscape-mode, but also when you open a new tab or tap the URL-bar. That makes it impossible to use muscle-memory to use your favorites.
E.g. in iOS the address-book and the address-list in the phone-app still show your own entry twice. Once at the top of the list (where it belongs) and secont in the list under the appropiate character. It should only be once in the list: at the top.

Although these and many other bugs are mailed to Apple several times, they still exist. All these new features would be greater, if also the old bugs would be fixed.

users with large numbers of Apps installed on IOS or IPADOS may want to hold off on upgrading ... the app search feature isn’t working properly for those with ~1000 apps or so

I haven’t upgraded yet, but I am confused about the lingo around the App Library. I don’t understand why there would ever be an “Add to App Library” function. Aren’t all your apps in your App Library automatically just by being on your phone?

I understand “Keep in App Library”. Delete this app from my home screen but don’t delete it from the phone, so it’s still available via the App Library. But you shouldn’t ever have to put an app there, right? It’s automatically there.

Or do I misunderstand?
Here's an example. I hid all my pages except the first Home page where I keep most used apps. I then decided to edit that single home page, removing two apps I no longer use frequently. So I wanted to remove these apps from that home page but NOT delete them from my phone (which was the former behavior when you click the X on a jiggling app). The dialogue is just a way to confirm that you want to keep the app, just in the Library and not on a page. Maybe it could say "KEEP in App Library" but for me at least the meaning was clear.

PS: I love the App Library. I was thrilled to get rid of several pages of folders and apps--pages and folders I set up over the years--and be able to stop spending time and energy to maintain this no-longer-necessary organization. Now I just have a single page, and swipe right for Today view and widgets swipe left for the App Library. Easy-peasy.

I appreciate the clarification, that’s how I thought it worked. Perhaps I am being nit picky, but I agree it should be “Keep in App Library” and not “Add to App Library”. “Add to” suggests it is not yet there and that I need to do this action for it to be there, which isn’t the case. “Keep in” is correctly representative: I wish to remove the app from my Home Screen but not remove it from the App Library.

I "upgraded" this morning. So far, I am not impressed. I would give the "upgrade" maybe a 6. I don't care for the App Library. Its organization is wacky. I can organize my apps better than either Apple or the developer(s). What happened to the Widgets? There is one thing that I like about the "upgrade" is that I can remove/delete apps that I previously was unable to such as the Health app. Never had much use for it before.

Anyone know how to change the default Mail app for example (I want to use ProtonMail instead)

ProtonMail does not support that feature yet. For the apps that do (currently only Spark, Outlook, Hey), go into Settings, scroll down to the app (for example Spark) and select it as the default.

Sadly there’s a bug that resets everything back to stock apps when the device is rebooted.

Widgets is a mess. There’s two ways to add them, it appears. Either hit customize and pick from the list, or hit the + in the top right corner and pick from that list. Along with App Library, Apple’s made the iOS UI into something you’d expect from MS back in the day.

Anyone having issues with glitchy widgets? While scrolling through a smart stack random widgets will just be blank. They will also flicker and occasionally go in reverse. Some stand along widgets are blank too. I have to go to a new page and back again before it resets.

Based on my experience with this I’ve formulated a hypothesis about the behavior of widgets:

I think that the content of the widget is only loaded when the user can see it (E.G. it is not loaded when the user is viewing a different Home Screen page or the widget is not currently on top of the stack.)

iOS and iPadOS are still very glitchy when it comes to deciding when these widgets should be displayed. For instance, on my iPad if you swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to the first Home Screen page from a different Home Screen page, sometimes iPadOS doesn’t show the widgets, and instead shows a blank widget or a cached snapshot of the widget.

Going to a different page and back again tells iOS explicitly that you are loading that page, and iOS loads the widgets. This is the most foolproof way that I’ve found to force widgets to load.

The “+” button is how you add the new iOS 14 Widgets. Older, pre-iOS 14 Widgets can be accessed from the Customize button/menu.

I've never reverted back to a previous iOS after an update until now. Holy crap this release was horrifyingly bad on my 8+. I had the following issues:

photos I just took would automatically rotate and crop themselves (often upside down)

silent mode (enabled with the switch) isn't silent if you have airpods in

"silence unknown callers" no longer worked

my shortcuts would no longer work from the widget but still work in the app "an error occured"

photos no longer upload to the cloud on battery power (phone was at 89%) unless you go in and manually "enable it for one hour"

My trust in Apple is really at an all time low with iOS14.

Okay, but why would a non-tech-site-reader (majority) user of an iPhone care about the distinction?

Along with App Library, it’s an inelegant solution.

Is it just me or are cellular download speeds improved with iOS 14?
I'm in a remote area so normally it's like 500Kbs avg but today after updating its averaging around 1.5 Mbps on my iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Mark my words, within the next day or so you will see news articles that say security fixes in iOS 14 make it mandatory that you must upgrade your iOS immediately. Especially if your on a 11 or 11 pro. It happens every time a new iOS is released. It’s secretly how Apple gets the pie ratio in favor of the new iOS. Forbes just ran an article today “iOS 14: Apple Just Gave iPhone Users 11 Security Reasons To Update Now“
There are security updates with pretty much any update. Nothing exactly something that Apple secretly does or some other conspiracy of some sort.

iOS 14 is one of the less Intuitive versions of iOS. While there are many good things there are some that are useless such as App Library and the sad part is you can’t disable it.
Widgets are limited but I’m sure will get better
BOTTOM LINE: iOS 14 still needs more polishing and a while to get used to it

iOS 14.0 has given my XS no issues I've noticed. Battery life seems normal or possibly better than that and all my apps work OK. The App Library baffles me, and the widget screen just seems weird. But hey-ho, no problem.

Sadly I couldn't watch the video due to Google having ruined YouTube with advertising - can anyone tell me how to beat that? Obviously without paying to not be annoyed; if you have to pay to not be shot in the face it's called extortion, I think I'd rather be shot in the face than watch another Grammarly ad with its intensely irritating voiceover.

maybe try using Ad Guard DNS on your connection

For "Default" servers:

After a few days, I have to say it is a really underwhelming release. App Library feels like something from a different OS. It doesn’t feel or look like iOS and the way it is accessed feels bizarre. Like an afterthought.

Allowing apps to only have access to certain photos sounds like a great idea but the way it is a one time choice makes it completely useless in many apps.

I’m not that interested in widgets on my primary Home Screen. I like my arrangement and know where things are. So widgets aren’t really any more use than they used to be: to the left of the main home screen.

The most useful new feature seems to be the back tap thing. A feature that would have been entirely appropriate as a point release in any of the more major iOS 13 updates.

Most of the headline features in the update seem like style over substance.

One thing I REALLY don’t like: the huge gap between the dock and the bottom row of Home Screen icons. Why has this been done? It’s really an aesthetic abomination and a waste of space.

Me too on back tap, luvly jubbly. I'm using it for screenshot, which is otherwise an awkward manoeuvre requiring manual dexterity and precision timing, both of which I'm not good at.

Yeah, the language isn’t great. Apps are always in the App Library, but not always on the Home Screen. You can remove an app from the Home Screen by “Moving it to the App Library.” But really it should be “only show in App Library,” or something similar.
