MacbookPro's 2012 and up and are still running Catalina, that's (at least) 8 years of support.

Or only 4 if you bought one in August 2016.

8 years is nothing specisl, give that Windows 10 runs on Macs going back to 2006. You get better OS support from Microsoft for older macs than you get from Apple.

Mojave and Sierra dropped support for many Macs, and the fact these unreported Macs can run these software releases with a little work shows that they were cut arbitarily.

Just a thought: So far, not a single iPhone has seen 6 years of software updates so that means that next year's iOS 15 will be the last version for the iPhone 7 that will be 5 years old by then.

the 5s says hi since that was supported for 6 years + odd security Patches sometime after iOS 13 was released

Great news that they continue to support old devices! I'm still on the iPhone 6s and I will likely switch to a newer version this Fall, but still big news.

Ehm.. yeah, because 2016 Macs can't be older than 4 years now since we're living 4 years after 2016 now.

Apple dropped support for my 2011 iMac because my graphics card did not support Mojave. Even the "Macs running unsupported versions of MacOS" forum here acknowledges that my iMac won't run on Mojave or later due to its graphics limitations.

The reason Apple cuts support for these macs is because they cannot guarantee that the OS will run smoothly the way the user expects it to run. So better safe than sorry in that case. They sure must remember the iOS 4 debacle of the original iPhone.

aaaaand iOS14 will last until Sept/Oct 2021 for that iPhone 6S, which gives it a 6 year latest iOS support track .. and who knows, could be getting iOS15.

Looks like my iPhone 6s Plus is going to another year with me. Had plan on upgrading, but with IOS 14 support may not need too.

Extremely happy about this! I just bought a 1st Gen SE with the understanding that I’d probably not see iOS 14 support. But lo and behold! I am so happy about this!

Good news but let's see the implementation on these older devices before handing out the congrats. Throttle-gate hasn't been forgotten.

SE1?

I see the article but at this point I need more confirmation SE1 is getting supported. They should have called the new SE device iPhone 9.

Found it:

not sure what this means, but the mid 2012 MacBook Pro was still being sold by Apple brand new in Sepmener 2026, meaning that there are examples of that a Mac which are only 4 years old, and users who will only get 4 years of updates.

They cut support for these machines to push people onto newer Macs. there are plenty of other Macs besides the 2011 iMac that can run Catalina perfectly well despite Apple dropping support in Mojave.

My 6S will live to phone another year then.
I also have a 6s, which I use at home so I don’t have to charge my X too often (I use it when I go out). I’m looking forward to seeing widgets on it. I’ll probably get a 12 Pro in December since I usually upgrade my phones every three years. I was thinking I would just add my 6s to my “Apple museum”, but I may continue using it into 2021 now that the iOS 14 update is keeping it modern.

iPad Air 2 takes the crown as the longest supported iOS/iPadOS ever (previously tied with the iPhone 5s). Kind of makes me wish I'd held onto mine!

How does it compare to the longest supported Mac? Genuinely curious, because 6+ years of support is pretty amazing for any consumer device these days, let alone a tablet.

Hmmm, good question. I'm not sure what the longest supported Mac is, but at this point the standard appears to be 7-8 years of support with the latest version of MacOS along with an additional 2 years of security only updates. Technically in a first for Apple, they have continued to support devices left behind on iOS 12 with security updates. Who knows for how long and if they trend will continue when future devices are dropped.

my poor poor ipad mini 2 :(
It didn't get iOS 13 either?

This is absolutely amazing. Innovating at high speed while at the same time offering years-long support, great work Apple! 🥳

Puts every lagdroid manufacturer to shame. My spare Galaxy S8 from 2017 is stuck on Android 9.0 (One UI 1.0) while the 2015 iPhone 6s gets iOS 14

I thought the rumors said the iPad Air 2 won't be supported. Glad that's wrong! My grandma is still using my old one and it's still a very capable device even after all these years.

Well I must say, I was considering going Android but I think after today, Apple has made my decision for me :). One another note I'm surpirsed to see my dad's iPad Air 2 is still supported but I'll still get him a new one for his birthday.

Because reading comprehension is key. What part of cross platform don't you understand?
It's obvious that the only reason you use Apple products is to have fresh "criticisms" about them as often as possible.

Apple could develop the cure for cancer and you would complain about them taking too long to come up with the cure and criticize Apple for allowing cancer to exist in the first place.

Long life to the best overpowered at launch iPad ever, the iPad Air 2. The combination of the powerful A8X and 2 GB seemed really futureprood.

Well done Apple!

So if there's anyone out there who uses "planned obsolescence" and "Apple" in the same sentence one more time: iOS 14 is your answer!
Only if it runs well. If it runs like crap, then no, it’s no answer. I’ve avoided iOS 13, so I could avoid iOS 14, too. In fact, it would serve me to stick with iOS 12 because iOS 13 BREAKS Safari iCloud synch with Macs below Mojave (and I can’t upgrade to Mojave).
