Following this. On Christmas morning while opening gifts my 12 PM went to a black screen while doing video. It was about half way though so several videos had been taken. Fully closing the app did not work. When I would open the app back up and record it would go black and only record sound. I had to reboot to fix it. It looked like a software issue to me.

As far as I can tell, the replacement hasn't even shipped yet. I was warned that there would be a delay because of the holidays.

I'll post in this thread again when I have something to report.

By the way, when the camera starts crashing, as you noticed any other apps crashing as well? If you can, try using your phone for a bit next time it's in that state before you restart it, and see if you notice anything about its overall stability.
I did every testing possible. In my case when camera crashes every other app working in backgrounds is closing (looks like iPhone is trying to make a place in memory for camera) so when I start other apps they just start from beginning. Nothing else is crashing. For me it clearly looks like a iPhone after some time of using is not able to make a place in memory for camera so it's crashing, or camera starts to consume too much resources so iOS is force closing it. I have a suspicion that one of the app working in background can make this happen, since I noticed same thing on Xs. Or it is just problem with memory leak in camera app. Unfortunately it is not possible for me to do a testing with a completely clear phone to find out which app or setting make this happen.

I had also this issue, but happened only once since I am not recording too much on my iPhone. Camera just went black and crashed after a while of recording.

My replacement shipped last night and is supposed to arrive sometime today. Of course, since the issue usually takes days to occur I’m not sure when I’ll be able to say for sure if the new phone has fixed the problem.

it really does seem like a software problem, but I’ve tried every solution for that on my current phone. So either it is a hardware issue or some of us are just cursed with some unique combination of apps or settings that causes this to happen, and I’m not sure how we’ll be able to isolate an exact cause.

Let me know how's gonna be your replacement. I hope everything is going to be fine so at least you will have device that is working like it should work for that amount of money :)

So far so good, but I only just set it up.

Are you sure that there's no way for you to get a replacement? Where did you purchase your phone from?

I did buy it directly from Apple site. But I am living in Poland so there is no official Apple store, only official Apple resellers and they do not provide replacements. Only way to get a new phone is to send or take this current one to Apple official reseller and then they take my phone to inspect what's going on and either fix it or give me a new one but it is a few day process and anyway because of COVID every nearest one is closed, I can only send a phone to them via post. And also I have a possibility to send my phone directly to Apple to another country but again, it is a few day process and I am not sure if they will be able to replicate this issue since I have to do a factory reset before sending it.

They shouldn't have to replicate the issue. Once I convinced Apple Support that I had tried everything that they suggested, they simply agreed to send a replacement. But I understand that you're not eligible for the express replacement (where they send you the new device before you send them your current one), so I guess there's no way for you to get a replacement device without being phoneless for a while.

I have an open case in Apple Support, they have seen my videos with the issue etc. So maybe they just could send me replacement right after getting my phone. If u will not have any problems with new device maybe I am going to send them my device, but first I have to get some cheap spare iPhone :)

Update: About 4 days with the replacement phone and no problems so far.
That is great! Mine crashed like seconds ago 😂 but finally I have got a log from the crash, it seems like the iOS is killing camera app because it takes too much of cpu resources so it kills the app to prevent the iOS from becoming very laggy. So either it is a problem in optimization or problem with my cpu. I am attaching part of this log as a screenshot.

This is very useful info! This might help Apple finally solve the problem. It may be that some units have a faulty cpu.
Diagnostics should catch that though. It really is a frustrating problem, and I'm still not convinced that I'm free of it. My original phone has gone longer than this between crashes. If I get through a couple of weeks with no incidents then I will be sure. Until then, I still hold my breath every time I try the camera.

OMG, your phone is restarting on top of that. That is crazy. It is all the time like that?

Day 6 with the replacement phone...

Camera Crashes!!

Slightly different though. It wasn't crashing every time I used the camera. Specifically, using the 2.5x zoom in landscape orientation caused crashes. Didn't crash in portrait, or using other lenses.

Again, restarting seems to fix it, but who knows for how long?

So it has to be software problem. There is a problem with camera app in iOS 14 DEFINETLY. I did every possible testing and since I replicated this on old Xs I am 100% sure this is not hardware. Mix of apps, settings, iOS 14 and, new iPhone 12 (maybe not every app is optimized yet?) and on TOP of that camera app which is buggy, slow and takes so much resources will cause this issues. In my opinion many people are not going to see this issue, everyone is using his phone in different configurations, different settings, different apps etc. I think it is the same story as green display tint - it is a software issue but not everyone has it.

Well, I've done everything that I can think of to fix the problem. I guess all I can do now is remember to restart my phone every day or two since I think that resets whatever accumulation of errors causes the crash, and hope that a future iOS update fixes it.

Did you send the crash log that you posted above to anyone at Apple?

I did not, I do not think there is any way to report logs. I know there is a way on when you are on beta, but unfortunately I am not :(

I see. Since this problem began I turned on the "share iPhone Analytics" setting on my phone, so in theory, information about my crashes should be getting sent to Apple.

I encourage you to do the same. Receiving such data in the only chance of Apple correcting the problem. It's obviously a very rare issue.

The same problem with my new iphone xr with pre installed ios 14.1. Camera app is crashing after taking a shot (with life photo turned on it happens more often then without it). I tried to do clean set up and problem still appears within 5 days.
Also report this problem in subreddit “Applehelp”. Here’s link:
You can leave a comment there if you want to. Maybe it would help us to get noticed by apple support as well.

Guys did you tried to DFU restore the iPhone?
I’ve done completely fresh reinstall iOS 14.3 without any backups. Doesn’t help at all.
just recorded a video of this bug. It’s all the same as previous one’s

DFU restore is not the same like a restore. Try this. If this doesn’t help it is definitely a hardware issue.

What does a DFU restore do that a full reset and setup as new through iTunes doesn't? Apple Support told me that that would re install everything right down to the firmware, and guess what, the problem came back.

I'm now using a replacement device and it still happened.
