About time it was added to the main camera app, should have been there from the start. Surely when they were testing the phone they found that the auto macro taking over randomly if too close could be a pain in the ass.

The whole camera app needs a massive overhaul anyway as it starting too cluttered, swiping to change modes now is a damn pain as there is so many to choose from so this could be done much better for a start. I'd personally love to see a brand new design that has a simple mode for the basics which will hide the majority of settings and an advanced toggle for finer control.

The problem with Smart HDR 4 is that you can't turn in off in situations where you do not want the HDR effect (except by using a different camera app).

Seriously. It's ridics that almost fifteen years after the iPhone was introduced, the stock camera app (which you can't change like browser/email app) lacks any decent pro controls for people who want them. Sure, you can kinda futz with exposure and focus, but there are literally dozens of third-party camera apps that allow you to fine-tune settings like ISO, shutter speed, etc.

As Apple has demonstrated, it's entirely possible for them to add expanded settings (NightMode exposure duration, and ooooh photographic styles), so the fact that they haven't given more control is infuriating.

Either add a UI option for controlling in-depth settings, or allow us to choose a third-party camera app as the default.

I think that is exactly what Apple’s intentions are. Keep the stock app as simple as possible while providing opportunities and keep the specialised apps for pros who know about them and will download them to do what they desire. The app ecosystem exists for a reason.

I guess I don't understand why a pro camera wouldn't have all settings tied to a button, toggle, or bar.

Why does the object need to be close to enable the macro mode? Just let the camera be used in any setting for any shot.
