With IPhone 11 Pro Max on 15.4 Beta 1 i don’t have this setting for Face ID with Mask.

It's about time. I don't have a Watch and this was the biggest reason Face ID was a downgrade over Touch ID immediately when I got my 13 Pro Max...yes masks are still required in some places.

I just spoke to someone yesterday that lived in China (don’t know where… a metro area though) and he reminded how mask wearing has been prevalent there for a while now. I just wonder how they got along then with faceID, as surely not everyone has an Apple Watch.

You clearly don't understand development cycles at all.

I'd rather have them not rush out features that create gaping security holes, TYVM.
The point was, this should have been available when more of us were expected to wear masks on a regular basis. At this point with multiple vaccinations and having had covid, there are not a lot of reasons other than maybe a super crowded place that a mask would be needed. The required places I guess like airports and indoors at the few businesses that still require it. I get what you're saying about security but really, with the resources available and the clear need the past two years, you would think it could have happened sooner. Just saying.

I remember when I first started having issues unlocking my iPhone due to the mask I genuinely went “by the time Apple fixes this the pandemic will be over and it will be redundant”

How naive of me…

I would never do this because if it’s just scanning the area around your eyes so it can’t be secure at all. I have bank cards and tons of personal information on my iPhone.

I don’t even see the point of this. Significantly reduced security so you don’t have to wear an Apple Watch?

The only time I could see this being acceptable is if you’re someone like my mom who doesn’t do anything with their phone other than text and make phone calls and maybe play an occasional game. No financial apps, 2FA apps or personal information on your phone.

Well done apple, 2 years to late; in the uk we don’t need masks anymore so maybe apple should of done this 2 years ago, doesn’t seem like a hard thing for them to do

It may still surprise you but the UK is not the rest of the world. Mainland Europe (yes, you are still on the continent Europe) will probably still wear mask at this time next year.

Let’s see, this is nearly 2 years after the pandemic reduced the effectiveness of face ID. Wow, such urgency, Apple.

Why not combine touch ID with face ID on new iPhones?

They should add a control center timer button to allow unlock with a mask for e.g. 1h during the time you’re buying groceries.

Not everybody who has an iPhone use an Apple Watch.

Not Argentina?

I guess I did well waiting for this to be a reality. I guess it is time to finally re- purchase the iPhone 13 mini that I returned mainly because of this. Great!

I’ve provided feedback about this several times, and I explained to Apple this was the reason I was returning my iPhone 13 mini, which was awesome otherwise. Glad Apple listened, even tho 2 years later.

While that would be convenient it would still be very insecure. A quick scenario is while you’re at the grocery store someone takes your phone and then they have all your bank cards. You’ll be paying for someone else’s groceries and maybe some gas. They know where you live and who your friends are. If you’re on Facebook or other social media they have access to those accounts to get your information from there.

I could go on and it gets worse but my point is if you’re someone that keeps all their information on their smart phone it’s downright scary what someone could do with that information. If you just use it as a phone they could get some information like your contacts but maybe not as scary.

This just doesn’t seem like a good trade off so people don’t have to wear an Apple Watch. I mean everyone has to decide what risks to take versus convenience but from someone who had to advise naive family members and friends on what to do after their information has been compromised online the thought of this to me is like fingernails on a chalkboard.

I won’t go as far as to say this shouldn’t be an option because you can leave your phone with no passcode. My thoughts are if any one of my friends asked me if they should do this I would strongly advise them no absolutely not. The trade off for convenience isn’t worth what possibly could happen.

All of this effort for making Face ID work when it can't even see most of your face and they refuse to just bring Touch ID back. Complete bull.
I agree it took too long to implement but that's precisely because there is so little unmasked face to work with. Touch ID might come back in small ways in the future but there is no good reason to not implement Face ID across entire product line from now on.
