I guess I did well waiting for this to be a reality. I guess it is time to finally re- purchase the iPhone 13 mini that I returned mainly because of this. Great!

I’ve provided feedback about this several times, and I explained to Apple this was the reason I was returning my iPhone 13 mini, which was awesome otherwise. Glad Apple listened, even tho 2 years later.
It’s not out yet. You didn’t consider getting an Apple Watch? I’m a bit confused because didn’t you know it had Face ID before you bought it? Did you think it would unlock with a mask on?

Unfortunately for Touch ID your only choice is really the iPhone SE2. It’s kind of dated ?

Well done apple, 2 years to late; in the uk we don’t need masks anymore so maybe apple should of done this 2 years ago, doesn’t seem like a hard thing for them to do
Do you know how hard it is to program a security feature like FaceID which was designed to work with your complete face, only to then re-engineer it to work with your Apple Watch, and then have to again re-engineer it to work with a mask?

Oh yeah, and adding to the frustration - design this feature while collaborating with your fellow engineers remotely, when you don't even know if your colleagues are giving this feature their full attention when they are coding the new features.

C'mon! Have some empathy!

Many folks who have iPhones also have Apple Watches. For them, unlocking the phone isn't the pain point - it's paying with Apple Pay! While one can use ApplePay with the watch, that can be pretty awkward to do when the pay terminals are pretty high up (e.g. in grocery stores).

While that would be convenient it would still be very insecure. A quick scenario is while you’re at the grocery store someone takes your phone and then they have all your bank cards. You’ll be paying for someone else’s groceries and maybe some gas. They know where you live and who your friends are. If you’re on Facebook or other social media they have access to those accounts to get your information from there.

I could go on and it gets worse but my point is if you’re someone that keeps all their information on their smart phone it’s downright scary what someone could do with that information. If you just use it as a phone they could get some information like your contacts but maybe not as scary.

This just doesn’t seem like a good trade off so people don’t have to wear an Apple Watch. I mean everyone has to decide what risks to take versus convenience but from someone who had to advise naive family members and friends on what to do after their information has been compromised online the thought of this to me is like fingernails on a chalkboard.

I won’t go as far as to say this shouldn’t be an option because you can leave your phone with no passcode. My thoughts are if any one of my friends asked me if they should do this I would strongly advise them no absolutely not. The trade off for convenience isn’t worth what possibly could happen.
Well, depends of the country you are from, here in Germany it’s not that severe. I usually set my display to “always on” when I’m doing a longer grocery store session. Simply because it pisses me off to keep rotating myself while typing my very long alpha numeric password, to avoid store cameras recording it, and that every time it locks.

Yeah it’s a security trade off, but I would welcome the login with mask option.

I had Apple Watch 1 and 4 and will probably never buy this crap again, my wrist is now occupied by a nice classy Omega Watch, which will last longer than I will.

When this was rumoured a few months back it was being tested with the iPhone 13 Face ID. Have they managed to bring it to all Face ID devices I wonder?
It was working on my iPhone 12 Pro Max last summer, and even on some older models as well, there was no special toggle to enable this but as you entered passcode phone learned and unlocked, either with mask on, or off, but on my iPhone it eventually stopped working in iOS 15.

You clearly don't understand development cycles at all.

I'd rather have them not rush out features that create gaping security holes, TYVM.
What development cycle takes 2 years to create a shippable increment of a relatively minor feature? Do you even Scrum bro?

Masks will stay forever, sometimes more, sometimes less, but they won’t go away.

So you have an alphanumeric password but you leave your phone unlocked sometimes. This is a common situation where when users are forced to have high security they will figure ways to make it useless. It’s kind of like when companies require complex passwords so the user writes the password on a sticky note under his keyboard. I think you would be better off just sticking to a four digit pin and keeping it on all the time versus making a password that is too difficult to use so you leave your phone unlocked. Just my opinion but you have to make your own decision as to what are the risks and what you feel comfortable with.

I kind of feel you when it comes to a nice watch. I used to wear a nice watch but I prefer the Apple Watch just because it’s more useful than something that costs thousands of dollars and only tells time and maybe the date. I won’t argue that one looks considered better though so for looks a nice watch is going to win every day of the week.

I’ve gone over that decision in my head and thought well I could wear the Apple Watch and a nice watch but to me that looks kind of goofy. I could wear the nice watch and lose the functions of the Apple Watch but that would’ve been a poor decision at least for me. My watch alerted me to rapid heart rate so I went to the ER. I won’t say it saved my life because it wasn’t afib but there was a temporary problem that needed to be addressed. Would it have just gone away if I didn’t go in? Maybe. Could I have died? Possibly but unlikely. Of course that’s not the reason why I bought and wear it because even though the thought of it alerting me to a problem was there I figured since I’m healthy it’s extremely unlikely. I mainly bought it because it tracks my exercise and steps and the notifications.

So after 2 years where it would have been actually useful, now when people are not wearing masks as often, they decide now to lower the security of Face ID completely?

This is one reason why the fingerprint reader on the back of Samsung phones is superior. I can unlock my phone in my pocket or in my hand, and by the time I have it up in front of me, it's ready to go. Probably 30% of the time I try to unlock my iPhone, I'm looking at a black screen and I need to wake it up before it will start the unlock process.

But it just moves the lock from my phone to my watch.
Does it? I thought it authenticated the top half with FaceID and, if that checked out, it used the watch as a second factor authentication.

Maybe I'm making that up... I'll have to look it up later and maybe disable that feature.

I bought it because, in the first place I wanted to test it with a mask, there are several videos of people configuring FaceID with a mask on and apparently it worked, but it didn’t work on my 13 mini. And because I didn’t remember how tiresome it was to enter the passcode each time I want to unlock my smartphone.

Also, I knew, from Prosser leak, that Apple was working on this. So I bought it in November expecting this to be released at some point during the fall. I really had the hope. But the feature didn’t come. And the returning window was approaching. And I shamed on Apple for forcing me buying an Apple Watch to be able to use it during this never ending pandemic. So before the returning window ended, I decided to ask the refund.

I even considered buying an Apple Watch, I asked here in the forum for the cheapest Apple Watch to unlock the iPhone -just for that because I honestly don’t want or need an Apple Watch- and most of the people told me “don’t buy an Apple Watch just to unlock your iPhone“. Honestly I’m pretty happy with my smart band that I charge once per month, and I don’t see myself charging another device each night. And I don’t need the expense of an Apple Watch.

Now that this is a real option, I will consider again the 13 mini, as I ended up loving it, and would’ve kept if it wasn’t because the issue of FaceID with masks.

WTF, this should have been pushed out 2̶ y̶e̶a̶r̶s̶ 21 months ago! FAIL APPLE!!!

Edited for accuracy. CDC began recommending masks on April 3, 2020.

The Watch unlock is a security hazard in my view since my experience is that anyone can unlock your phone if your are nearby with your unlocked watch.
You can lock your phone again from the watch if it was an accidental unlock, and when you lock it from the watch it prompts for code instead of biometrics
