no matter how low latencies are in a lab setting.
here lies the issue. there went a whole lot wishful thinking into the so called 'use-cases' which were somehow instantly translated into prediction by the media (and vendor's marketing core) with the 'fake it till you make it' mindset from day 0.
on the other hand, in real world physics is still a thing, and the speed of light in fibre optic cables pretty much declares how much latency one will have over 100km distance, like it or not. daydreaming about sub-ms end-to-end latencies and showing off at MWC - regardless what pay grade are those execs in - tells just this message: "we have no clue what i'm talking about"

that’s cause you saved the network connection delete it and you’ll see next time you’re at Starbucks. They’ve gotten better but Pizza Pizza and others I’ve mention tend to lease the intent connection very short (days/weeks) so it’s constant need to agree.
Seems like an easy fix and security/privacy boost to just turn wifi off when leaving your home and turning it on when needed if can even be automated to turn on and off when you leave and arrive at your home.

Did you read my responses?
sure I can turn it off but tak8ng public transit it’ll on off on off too much manual work to do. My request to update the behaviour doesn’t affect every else not in the same situation. Also disabling Wi-Fi affects Watch to unlock iPhone.

Some of those hotspots load the captive page directly from the router. Not using data from the hotspot would prevent you from connecting; a cellular connection wouldn't be able to retrieve the login page since it cannot connect to the local IP address.

I recommend forgetting all public wifi hotspots if you do not use them so they will not auto-connect while you're out and about. The "Auto-Join Hotspot" setting is only for the tethering hotspot, so that setting can be left on.
hmm .

I have already stated I’ve turned off auto connect and AUTO join screenshot above in the history of the thread. I’ve already forgotten those public Wi-Fi access points. I know how to set up works. What I am asking is the change in iOS is that iOS doesn’t automatically try to connect to the network or if it does it doesn’t try routing or Internet traffic through the connection. The connection doesn’t fully get you to the Internet as you know. The problem is if nearby or in range of the public access part even if it’s you’ve never connected to it before or have forgotten connection to it fully I was will still try to use the public hotspot is a priority for Internet traffic which in turn affects all applications and services on iOS.

Weird, I've seen the exact opposite. When I tell it to forget, it forgets.
That part works that’s not the issue.

Now go back to any of those public hotspots, Starbucks has changed their set up so that’s not relevant anymore, and not connect but take a look with Wi-Fi on your iOS iPhone it will start to try and route traffic to it because it “connects” regardless of the settings stating NOT to. Note that you don’t yet get internet connection, BUTios STILL tries to use Wi-Fi as a priority for data EVEN if you have NOT actiully selected the hotspot to prompt/load authentication page for ToS to agree to which actually grants you full internet access. Again absolutely no settings is set to alow the connection it just does.

if you try to load a page, use iCloud services or any 3rd party app that needs internet access you’ll see this when it occurs and the delay will happen until you disable Wi-Fi on iOS.

I got lost in the horrible grammar.

I hope this finally works, Apple has been talking about this for years it seems. Not this specifically, but for years they have been saying when the wifi network is weak the phone should switch to cellular. In practice I've never seen this happen. Sitting in my driveway with a very weak signal but I need to enter an address into Waze, my iPhone won't let me because of poor network until I'm about a mile away from my home.

Yes and anyone who cares about security should be using that.
I kinda forgot that that's on by default - so weird. I've had this off since I got my first iPhone in 2007.

Why would anyone connect to random networks...

5g was primarily rolled out to control humans but I suppose everyone who would be willing to admit that would by now have figured it out - the towers look like control towers from a SciFi movie. EMF interact with water and air & just because you don't know about a technology doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

A bit OT but heard yesterday the CIA had a ice gun for over 50 years, it would shoot a tiny ice dart on close range which contains an agent that causes a heart attack, since it's ice it melts and leaves no trace, agent is also undetectable. Sounds crazy but was recently declassified. I bet most people didn't know this tech existed either.

I’ve never had an issue with battery even when leaving it on “5G on” but 5G speeds are usually worse than lte for some reason

5G has more limited carrier aggregation capabilities and is also deployed on fewer bands than LTE is. Unless you have access to midband or mmWave 5G, it will often underperform compared to LTE. That will improve as the technology matures and carriers continue to roll out more.

Yeah I don’t have mmWave anyway and I don’t need 2gbps on my phone. Personally I’d rather them work on coverage and get 100mbps everywhere instead of 2gbps standing on my left toe upside down facing at a perfect 32.7° angle.

mmWave is a capacity monster which will make it key in cities, stadiums, etc. Midband is where it’s at though, being a compromise between coverage and speed, just wait until AT&T and Verizon get C-Band rolled out and T-Mobile gets their 2.5GHz out in more areas. 100Mbps in most urban areas is not out of the question as long as they don’t oversell home internet too.

Honestly I'd like iOS to properly fix this issue.
coming across a public Wi-Fi access point that needs authentication, even if 'forget network' has been done, iOS will still 'CLING' onto that network causing a delay in loading websites in Safari or a delay in any 1st/3rd party apps installed.

McDonald's
Tim Hortons
Starbucks etc. ALL need end user interaction to authenticate BEFORE you can use that internet connection.

This has been a LONG standing pain point on iOS.

Connection to an access point is just that, it doesnt' mean you're connected to the internet: On-ramp to a highway can STILL be closed and prevent your car/suv/truck etc from getting the full internet super highway. This is like basic 1984 stuff why is this so hard for Apple to figure out?!
While they’re at it they should make wifi page load in the browser rather than the settings app because it’s a mess to deal with.

I'm the type of person that wouldn't dare leave wifi or bluetooth on while using public transit especially when it takes a fraction of a second to enable/disable or can even be automated too much added risk for me.

Here in Toronto, ON we finally have WiFi (last 2/3yrs) but its ONLY at each TTC subway station. Takes about 4mins to finally get full internet (connect to SSID, wait for the pop-up authentication which is LOADED with ads and counts down from 5-1 seconds BEFORE you can select Connect. Then another pop-up page, again with ads loads, and boom you've got internet). The reason why so many in the city use it - not just to save data, yet also - is ONLY 1 provider has cellular coverage at subway levels and its THE worst provider we have in this country - FREEDOM (not much of).

However, during this pandemic, toggling off WiFi on iPhone will prompt a notification that it'll affect Apple Watch to unlock with face mask detection. So I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't.

Time for me to look into buying a car!

Have you ever tried completely resetting your network settings? It shouldn't connect if forgotten but maybe its seeing each station as a separate access point or something.
