“Clean energy charging” is ridiculous from a product assembled in a country where coal burning plants are rampant and dozens more are being built.
China consumes less power per capita than the US. It is #1 in the world in solar. It is #1 in the world in wind. These aren’t even close—like double the entire EU, which is far ahead of the US. It is #1 in the world in hydro by 3x, with 28.5% of the world’s total. It is #1 in the world in grid battery storage, and in pumped hydroelectric storage as well.
Yet per-capita it still consumes less than the US. By all means, criticize China’s continued use of coal, but what about West Virginia, still at 88% coal, well above China? There’s very similar political resistance in coal-producing regions of China.
The iPhone was built in Guangdong province, with 29% renewables plus about 14% nuclear, puts it ahead of the US average with 20% renewable, 19% nuclear.
With their large populations, China and India are critically important, but the US is still king of consumption and has not been keeping up. South Australia is getting quite close to 100% renewables; the best we can do is Iowa with 58% wind.
Overall China’s failure to curb coal is deeply concerning. I think the US has built its last coal plants, and they are closing rapidly. China’s period of rapid growth is ending, so I do expect progress on coal going forward, but it should have done more, just as we should have done more. Timing matters!
But this is about the iPhone. Guangdong is better than the China or US average. If you want clean power, site your plant in South Australia.
