Just finished updating. The back of my iPhone 14 Pro Max is warm and toasty 🥵. This update better not degrade the battery life on my iPhone.

The only way 16.3.1 is likely to have a measurable impact on battery life is if it fixed a bug that was measurably reducing battery life in a previous update (e.g., some background process going berserk and generating high CPU usage for long periods of time).

There isn't really much they can do with an otherwise functional production operating system that would affect battery life to any significant extent other than to disable features by killing their associated background processes — and even then, only features that are frequently active enough to generate significant amounts of CPU activity (i.e. those features actively being used) would be likely to make that kind of impact.

Widget shows battery % but Settings > AirPods does not…

And my favorite bug or feature - widgets can be still pressed 😂

What is more, Apple played with “antialiasing” and broke it - see how ugly is greyed out battery widget on black backgroud of disconnected and connected devices 😂 FFS Apple…

Yes and no.

There’s virtually always more than one way to logically implement any particular algorithm / function / whatever. Some are more obvious to the typical human; some use fewer CPU cycles but more RAM; and so on. Some are more energy-efficient one one hardware architecture but not some other.

At the heart of a software engineer’s job is finding a good balance between performance, maintainability, time to implement, and so on.

So it’s not at all hard to imagine something being initially released that works just fine but isn’t the most optimal solution for battery performance — and then a revision later focussed on optimizing battery performance.

All that writ, these are pretty well-trod paths, and all the low-hanging fruit is gone. So, while I wouldn’t rule out a software update improving battery performance, I wouldn’t exactly expect it, either.

Looks like a mostly ip14 release. I’ll stay on 15.7 till 16.4 at least. Reading of issues on 16.3 and don’t wanna take the plunge cause it cannot be undone.
