You don’t need to subscribe to Overcast. I suppose the subscription gives you some benefits but the only downside to the free version is a very small, very discreet ad at the bottom of the now playing screen. It often advertises other podcasts that I have found interesting and also subscribed too. It’s a sickness but I’m OK with that. 😊A while back, I started using Overcast as a podcast app. I liked it quite a bit, but I was not going to keep subscribing to an application; I don't mind paying for one but I do mind subscribing for one. So, I just reverted back to podcast after I stopped my Overcast subscription.
I've never used VLC to manage my podcasts. I've only ever used it to edit videos or more like re-encode or rip DVDs ;-)
