A while back, I started using Overcast as a podcast app. I liked it quite a bit, but I was not going to keep subscribing to an application; I don't mind paying for one but I do mind subscribing for one. So, I just reverted back to podcast after I stopped my Overcast subscription.

I've never used VLC to manage my podcasts. I've only ever used it to edit videos or more like re-encode or rip DVDs ;-)
You don’t need to subscribe to Overcast. I suppose the subscription gives you some benefits but the only downside to the free version is a very small, very discreet ad at the bottom of the now playing screen. It often advertises other podcasts that I have found interesting and also subscribed too. It’s a sickness but I’m OK with that. 😊

Then that must be it -- the ads. I generally hate seeing ads in apps I often use. I do not need to be subsconsciously swayed by ads :)

Here is the Overcast now playing screen on the free version.
That is the only ad in the app and it is very unobtrusive.

I still don’t like ads like that. The Weather Channel app has ads like that so I’m familiar. Not a fan.
The the other option is a subscription (or a subsidized app like Apple Podcasts). simple options, you just have a to choose.

Ugh. So ios 16.4 deleted all the podcasts synced from iTunes on my PC, and my phone won’t sync wirelessly at all now? Maybe it wiped out the pairing between iTunes and my iPhone, and maybe connecting via a cable will get it to sync again?!
Urrgh, I wish I read your post prior to update to 16.4. It deleted all my sync unplayed podcast within minutes after I synch them again. This is ridiculous. Fix it Apple.

Wow …. podcast app completely destroyed my battery life … even after sync and downloading … quickly deleted it and back to normal (using overcast).
Probably after update, it needs some time to do some background things. I think this can be expected for any OS update.

I’m glad it’s not just me at least!

I’m guessing there’s no way to get them back, even if they fix the problem, and with my lightning port dead, I can’t reestablish it 😕

Going to give it a try (again). First impressions looks promising.

Coming from Downcast app, but it doesn’t support widgets and CarPlay is buggy.

I’m not a super heavy podcast user so I think I can live with a more simple podcast app.

I imported opml-file with my subscriptions using iTunes (windows). Synced fine to my iPhone.

Manually re-created stations (my playlist) and configured it to not download (just stream) and display last three episodes of each podcast.

All I need.

Only thing I miss so far is Downcasts ability to also skip +-30sec +2min

Channels seems kind of cool, a nice way to discover content from the same “channel”(provider) as the show(s) you already subscribed to.

Had to delete this app as battery life drain was really bad. Using pocket casts which is better for the watch and overall

Have you checked if it’s configured to download?
I have no critical battery drain, but all my shows are set to stream only. My download folder is empty.
