Are you sure?

I just tried it on my iPhone 13 Pro in landscape which is running iOS 16 Beta 1 and it worked.
Thank you for confirming. The other features in the release notes all came with a footnote to specify which devices it works on. Landscape Face ID suspiciously did not. I was gonna be so mad if it only worked on the one to be released this fall.

Is there a technical reason this wasn't already possible?

Windows Hello works in any orientation, I just assumed all facial recognition were scale and orientation invariant by default.

On supported iPhone models running iOS 16, Face ID is able to work in landscape mode, making it easier to unlock the iPhone when it's not held in the standard Portrait orientation.

This feature does not appear to be implemented in the current beta, and there isn't a lot about it on Apple's website at the current time, but it sounds like it will offer a much improved unlocking experience.

Apple does not specify which iPhones are considered "supported iPhone models," so it may be a feature that works on all iPhones that have a TrueDepth camera, or it may be limited to newer devices.

I hope my 12 gets this function.

Also very nice. Again too late because this addition really can’t be such a huge deal to implement.

So, can we hope for a Landscape mode Homescreen as well?
Just last week I saw Landscape Homescreen on the aging iPhone 7 Max of my sister and was stunned this existed on that model but was apparently removed for any later phone with FaceID.
eh...seeing how they messed up my carefully arranged home screen on the 4th gen iPad Air after installing iOS 15, I would say be careful what we wish for.

I don’t use my phone in ‘landscape mode’ all that much, but there are times where if I’m watching some type of media in landscape mode, and I need to unlock the display, that’s when this would be most useful for me. Otherwise, I primarily would still use portrait, but it’s nice to have the alternative.

Kinda frustrating to know that this has just been a software limitation this whole time. I mean, I’m glad to get it. Better late than never, but still.
Pretty much and I am shocked to know that camera can see my face at that angle this whole time but chose to ignore my face.
