Oh well. We´ll see. The liner notes of 16.1 still say it, so perhaps it is something only activated completely along with the final public release, not in the betas, like Matter support itself.
Given how poorly they've tested HomeKit over the past few years, I sincerely hope not. Not allowing the public to test it would be a huge mistake.

To be completely honest, I dont think Homekit has ever worked well. Which is why I´m hopeful on what a big code rewrite could bring.
I was giving the benefit of the doubt, really where it shouldn’t have been given lol. I look back now, beyond two years ago and oof, was it terrible back then too.

With this code rewrite, I’m also preparing for disaster. I have a full nuking of my HomeKit and network setup on my list of things to do but waiting for the Big Bang. Don’t want to do it twice in short period of time.

Regardless, did they even listen to the beta testers and all the feedback they received? Would it really matter? Lol.

Every update this sub gets filled with horror stories suitable for camp fires. Lol

Edit* we’ve been asking for the ability to user select and stick a home hub but crickets. This I believe is a huge reason for a lot of HomeKit performance failures. Hubs auto switching to one in a worse location. Maybe this is what the huge architectural change is about. Imagine? Lol.

Would it?. The public beta testing program hasnt helped homekit in the last few years. Nor has it helped Mac Os (look at Mail or the Music app, for example) for that matter.

Hard wired Apple TV´s are the best, more reliable option, arent they?

Absolutely! That’s a discovery I made years ago. I had this one Leviton switch that was staring at an eero Pro from about 10 feet away. Darn thing always went offline when a HomePod was the connected hub but miraculously worked great when my hardwired ATV took the duty.

Same for the Logitech Circle 2’s. A lot of complaints that they couldn’t reliably deliver a live stream when outside the Wi-Fi coverage area. I too had this problem until, yep, you guessed it, the hub was a hardwired ATV.

I really wished the HomePods had an Ethernet port. I bet they’d be awesome.

I don’t own any HomePods so can’t speak to that. But I’ve had iPadPros and AppleTV4Ks as hubs, currently using the latter which is hardwired (Ethernet) to an eeroPro router. I think that gives me pretty reliable usage of connected devices from outside the local area. But I still have problems with various devices generating “No Response” all too frequently. Yes, disconnected/reconnecting works in most cases but a huge PITA and negates the usefulness of smart plugs behind furniture or other hard-to-access locations…and that was my reason for putting smart plugs there to begin with. Yeah, Homekit is not fully baked yet, nor are the devices seemingly, maybe the networks too.

I will say that the issues I was having were resolved with the 16.1 update yesterday. Shortcut automations that never actually worked outside of the test mode suddenly started working.

As for the new architecture, I thought I saw somewhere that it was going to be opt-in at first. I sure hope so because I rely pretty heavily on homebridge, and I want to know that the maintainers of that project have had time to make any required adjustments.

New architecture seems to have been delayed (again). And yes, it’s opt-in (at least initially).

Yes, now the new home app architecture is part of the new 16.2 beta, and was not present in the liner notes of the final released version of 16.1.

However 16.1 (final release, I personally dont use betas), seems so much better on my homepods. Faster, more reliable. In particular, lossless tracks from Apple Music load so much faster now, as fast as their AAC counterparts, and the lossless tracks related bug (glitch and pops), is truly gone.

Well, found out a lot about our home’s equipment yesterday.

Tried a software update on our iPhoneSE (1st gen) and iPhone7. Neither will update beyond 15.7 so I guess we don’t have to deal with that anymore, at least until we replace one or both.

Saw that one of our TV’s connected AppleTV4K device lost the Hulu app entirely. No longer appears in the Main Menu options. Restarted, checked for software updates, all current. Then learned Hulu no longer supports that model of AppleTV4K, whereas it works fine on my other, newer, unit. Insidious was to be made to upgrade, given that ALL other apps seem to be able to handle the older AppleTV4K just fine thank you.

Might have to unlock the wallet here at some point sooner than desired.

@SalisburySam

Huh?. Hulu still works on any Apple TV that can run the latest tvOS version (which is to say, Apple TV HD -2015- and newer).

Something strange is going on with your unit.

Unless you got confused and it wasn´t an Apple TV 4K, but a much older Apple TV second or 3rd gen unit, which yes, Hulu no longer supports.

Please check if the affected Apple TV has an App Store. If not, is a much older model.

IOS 15.7.1 is coming soon for older devices, by the way.

The stuff about Hulu doesn't sound right. I have an AppleTV HD and a 1st gen AppleTV 4K and Hulu works fine on both, and both are running tvOS 16.1.

It must be an Apple TV 3rd gen. They did drop support for that model just a few days ago.
