With iOS 16, Apple is bringing the full-screen music player back to the Lock Screen, offering an entirely new view that puts album art in the center with controls at the bottom.

The full-screen music player on the lock screen was last available with iOS 10 and is now back with iOS 16 as part of a lock screen redesign. On iOS 16, users will be able to change the Lock Screen font and colors, add new widgets, entirely new dynamic wallpapers, and more.

It's worth noting that in the first developer beta of iOS 16, the full-screen music player does not seem to be present.

iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 are currently in beta testing with developers with a public beta planned for both in July. ‌iOS 16‌, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, and watchOS 9 will be available to users this fall.

I hope that Apple allows users to adjust the location for where the playback controls go on the screen - I would much rather have the play, pause and skip forward and backward controls where they currently are on iOS 15

Having them at the bottom of the screen is horrible UI - especially when holding your iPhone with one hand

i might be mistaken but it looked like it was only full screen if you tap on the music widget.

Huh? Especially with one hand it’s easier to use when it’s on the bottom.

I could be wrong but did they say in the keynote that the player controls on the Lock Screen are a Live Activity? The MR article above this one says Live Activities won’t be available at launch. But they have to have music on the lock sceen at launch so I’m still trying to understand what makes it a Live Activity…? Maybe I just misunderstood that part.

already bothers me how close the album art finishes to the time. There needs to be about the spacing as at the bottom and the music controls. What happened to Apple and details.

Also, I don’t think this is the „default view“. You will have to tap on the album art to enlarge it based on what was said during the keynote

I'd really like to remove the music player from the Lock Screen, especially when I'm not using my phone to play music, i.e. its playing from a HomePod in my house.

About time. Not sure why they ever took that away. Awesome!

I'm glad the music controls are at the bottom now. Easier to access quickly now that phones are bigger than they used to be. I wish Apple would also allow customization on what controls can be on there: Like/Dislike, Shuffle, Repeat would be so handy as they are somewhat buried in the Music app already

I'm still debating what to do when my Apple Music subscription expires. I was bummed they didn't do any AM announcements yesterday, but evidently there were new features coming. I was really hoping, more than anything else, for user improvements, like being able to put curated playlists into folders, having a Windows Music app to finally replace Itunes (Even though my Itunes works really well), and put the heart back on the main music player so I don't have to like a song in more than 3 steps. I also wanted them to make their radio section much more user friendly, and be able to save Radio stations, pin favorite playlists/radio stations, and just enhance that section of Apple Music more. None of that happened and when it was ignored I thought maybe Apple didn't care about it's Music service anymore. Despite all that though, and because I have been using Itunes for years, Apple Music is still the most user friendly of services. I have always hated Spotify's main page and podcast integration.
