Since upgrading to 16 my phone won’t charge using CarPlay (and navigation) due to getting too hot. It’s not hot weather here.

Anyone else seeing similar? Was definitely not doing this last week with 15.6.1

Yes, this just happened to me today. I upgraded last night. When I got home from work today, I got a notification that my phone had stopped charging until it cools down. I live in a desert so I definitely would remember if this had ever happened before.

People are mixing in battery drain in replies, but I think you’re describing CarPlay with the phone plugged in to a lightning cable. That’s what I use, my vehicle doesn’t offer wireless CarPlay.

It’s a major issue with iOS 16 and CarPlay and has been well reported through the beta cycle, and still not fixed.

My iPhone 12 Pro Max never reported an overheating message once running iOS 15. It’s a daily occurrence with iOS 16, even in a well conditioned vehicle, no case on the iPhone, and more than one complete wipe and install to reset.

My iPhone 13 mini overheats within 20-30 minutes in my VW Jetta (wired CarPlay) and it's a huge issue. Actually it was getting warm even on iOS 15 but 16 seems worse. It will stop charging and then I end up at my destination without enough battery. It was unpleasant to discover this the other day when I drove to the train station to NYC and discovered that my battery was only like 75% and my phone was piping hot.

I use wired CarPlay on an iPhone 13, and have not experienced this. Dumb question: have you rebooted the phone?

Drive for living using CarPlay for navigation and music for 10/12 hours a day, no issues with overheating. Not tried charging as battery on my IP14 Pro Max is insane lasts all day.

iPhone 13 mini iOS 16.0.2 and my phone is also getting much hotter than ever before while using wired CarPlay.

FYI I used Android Auto doing the same types of things on my Xperia 5 III. GPS, music, etc. Cool as a cucumber. It's also a compact phone with a high end chipset so it's not a given that the phone should heat up with these usages.

my iphone 12 was also getting hot when using carplay. I tested it and the reason was the Waze app. When using the Apple Maps application, the iPhone did not heat up.

I haven't had any heat issues on my 14pm or battery drain. I have seen a time or two where the screen freezes up when it first connects and takes about 30 seconds before all my taps register (on the head unit not the phone). Rare but its happened twice in the last 2 weeks. Resolves after 30 second or so.

Get Belkin MagSafe car mount charger, then let the AC blow cold air on to it.

Works for me. 😂

No you don't

Do I need to take a photo of it?

I wasn’t using it at the time but two weeks ago I had zero heat issues without using it on iOS 15. I’ve never had heat problems preventing charge with any iPhone since the 6 doing the same thing. I never had issues with my 13 mini out of the box either.

Blowing cold air on a phone that is overheating since iOS 16 that never used to is not a fix. It’s a Band-Aid.

Also, current rental car is not compatible with the Belkin AC mount; and I'm stuck with this thing for a month while my car is in for paint work.
