iOS 16 adds native support for the Dvorak keyboard layout on the iPhone, providing users with an alternative to the standard QWERTY layout.

Dvorak was designed to make two-handed typing faster and more ergonomic compared to QWERTY. Patented by August Dvorak in 1936, the layout reduces finger motion by placing all vowels in the middle row on the left side of the keyboard and commonly-used consonants like R, S, T, N, and L on the right side. However, given that typing on a smartphone involves your thumbs only, Dvorak is not as beneficial on the iPhone.

On an iPhone running iOS 16, the Dvorak layout can be enabled in the Settings app under General → Keyboard → Keyboards → English → Dvorak, alongside existing QWERTY, AZERTY, and QWERTZ options. Dvorak is only available for English right now.

Prior to iOS 16, using Dvorak on the iPhone required installing a third-party keyboard from the App Store or connecting a capable external hardware keyboard. Dvorak has also long been supported on the Mac and can be enabled in the System Settings app under Keyboard → Input Sources by clicking the plus sign and selecting Dvorak.

I used to use azerty on my iPhone, may try dvorak out too.
No one can learn a new layout, the normal one is stuck in our brains lol
I woudn't say you're wrong, but some people try new keyboards and love them. Especially for those who build their own mechanical keyboards and spend hundreds doing so. Ortholinear looks interesting to me personally:

Although this image is qwerty, you can change to azerty or other layouts too.

Very funky! Will be interesting to see how people manage with a single hand as many benefits of Dvorak's are based on a two-handed layout on a standard computer. Nice option though!

Apple's QWERTY keyboard needs to step up its game. I hate to say it but the Google keyboard is much better at figring out what I am trying to type. For example, Gboard will turn im or Im into I'm where Apple will leave it as im or Im. The only thing Gboard doesn't do as well is the pressing the space bar to get the cursor to act as a mouse cursor.

I also wish Apple's keyboard would learn words by allowing you to highlight one it doesn't recognize and giving you the option to learn or add it to the dictionary right then and there.

This might encourage me to try learning Dvorak on my BT mechanical keyboard, mostly as a brain strengthening exercise by training it to do something new.

Haha, this would mess me up so bad. I still have hiccups with QWERTZ at times while typing in German since QWERTY is branded in my muscle memory.
