You kinda can though, have 4 screens then swipe to an app that is resized to take up the full screen viewIn case you don't know this yourself already (or other people are interested) the answer is No you can't.

I've now upgraded my iPad and Stage Manager is perfect for my needs. I can maximise an app to full screen whilst Stage Manager is on and shrink the app a tad to access groups of apps at the side. The closest to this is an external monitor always has Stage Manager turned on, but it's possible for the iPad screen to work in standard full screen mode. This is the way I choose to work using the external monitor more as a way to easily see emails, music or updates on any websites i'm developing. The iPad stays in normal mode giving me slide over and split view like I prefer to work in.
... don't need to point out to you that its still in early beta so many things wont be working yet.I've now upgraded my iPad and Stage Manager is perfect for my needs. However, Airdrop no longer works between my iPad and my iMac (running Mojave).
with the greatest of respect.... such posts are better aimed at Apple at this point. One thing that’s bugging me. When I first used Stage Manager on my iPad Air, I was able to have multiple Safari windows in different stages.
Now, I can’t even open a new window, and if I right-click or long-press on Safari and select “Show all windows” I just get an empty screen with my blurry wallpaper.
if I drag safari’s icon from the dock to a stage, it simply moves the sole safari window from another stage to the current one, rather than opening a new one. In fact this is not limited to Safari but any app that supports multiple windows.. Am I missing something?
I'm usually the first to say that - however, 3 of my recent issues turned out to be fixed with some restarts/factory resets, and it's also interesting to see if that's something experienced by others and not just some user error.with the greatest of respect.... such posts are better aimed at Apple at this point.
Use the feedback option.
You are beta testing it for them.
Theres no point coming in here and detailing things that don't work as... well... they aren't really supposed to be completely working at the moment.
I didnt say there was any harm in it.I'm usually the first to say that - however, 3 of my recent issues turned out to be fixed with some restarts/factory resets, and it's also interesting to see if that's something experienced by others and not just some user error.
It also helps OTHERS to see if that's something that's unique to them or not. No harm it in.
Sooooo have you encountered the same behavior I have? Are you able to use multiple Safari windows? So I can compare my experience with some one else and maybe learn something or whatnot…I didnt say there was any harm in it.
More that such irregularities are going to be rife at the moment in the early beta releases.
Ive found it to be surprisingly stable however there are indeed some huge bugs and things that just don't work at the moment. Apps that don't play nice... windows that don't resize etc etc
Right now, ill be honest I haven't raised a fault with Apple purely because the faults are so big and glaringly obvious that im sure they've been reported a hundred times already and Apple are on the job fixing it.
Give it a free more weeks and a few more beta releases and if its still as shonky as it is now then ill be a bit more vocal about it especially to apple.
Actually, yes.i think so.Sooooo have you encountered the same behavior I have? Are you able to use multiple Safari windows? So I can compare my experience with some one else and maybe learn something or whatnot…
Actually, yes.i think so.
If you want me to check a specific behaviour im quite happy to do it for you on my 12.9" iPad Pro running ios16 public beta 1. Let me know what you'd like me to try and lll report back.
Yeah, Stage Manager seems a lot more suited to mouse/kb usage than touch screen. Too many conflicting gestures equivalent to "swipe from the left side of the screen" I suppose lol.In my experience, I have used it lightly, had a play, and as soon as ive found something that doesnt work as expected ive just brushed it aside for now.
That said, I did notice for example that when you have larger windows that obscure the side stages, you can only see them again if you are using the trackpad and cursor and not your finger - but again I might be doing it wrong.
ok so ive followed your instructions exactly.Appreciated
So let's say you have 2 stages with some apps open. Mail and Safari in one stage, Messages in another stage.
Switch to the stage with Messages. Now, with any of the known means to add a window to a stage, try to add a Safari window. e.g. click/tap on the 3 dots at the top of Messages and Add a New Window, or drag the Safari icon from the Dock into the stage.
Result: Safari window from the "Mail" stage *moves* to the Messages stage.
Long-press or right click on the Safari icon in the Dock and select Show All Windows.
Result: I see the blurred wallpaper and no Safari windows at all.
What I want to do: create multiple Safari windows like we used to be able do, without Stage Manager, and have windows in different stages.
So either it's a bug which I will report, OR I have no idea how to open multiple Safari windows (or other apps that support multiple windows). when Stage Manager is on.

Thanks in advance for testing!

Worth saying that nothing behaves quite as you'd think it should at the moment but:
1. my result wasnt the same as yours. It seemed to open safari but what it did was actually move the safari window from the mail and safari stage to the messages stage leaving the mail app all on its own on its own stage.
2. then going on to show all windows... mine did the same as yours - a blurred wallpaper blank screen - so you are not alone there.
Back to 1.... not sure that 'add another window' or drag icon to stage actually do what you think - it doesnt open a new instance of safari but just moves the currently open instance to that stage. Is this right, or wrong.. I don't know. As I say its too early in the beta and im certain Apple are going to make some significant changes to it as it progresses through beta.
Also, I can answer your question re multiple instances. You can have multiple instances of safari in the same stage - just go to a stage where safari is already open, then drag from the dock safari again.. it will open a second instance. That said I struggle to replicate behaviour in a repeatable way so its still very hit and miss.
…don’t need to point out to you that Apple drop support for older OSs to force us to upgrade.... don't need to point out to you that its still in early beta so many things wont be working yet.
...dont need to point out to you that Apple retain support for older devices much longer than moist tech companies - and nobody forces you to do anything - iOS16 is compatible with 5th Gen iPad released 5 years ago.... only older ones lose iOS16 compatibility. Time to upgrade and stop whining.…don’t need to point out to you that Apple drop support for older OSs to force us to upgrade.
Tbf, I think you have preconceived notions about Stage Manager... you already mention that Stage Manager isn't needed, that you prefer SplitView/SlideOver.Stage Manager feels so fussy and slow it’s incredibly frustrating. I previously thought that stage manager might have limited use on the iPad screen but that it would shine with an external monitor. I was so wrong. It just feels bad because the controls are so imprecise. The windows resizing requires extremely accurate placement of the cursor for it to work, which has the result that resizing windows is just extremely annoying to do Because it takes like 3 seconds of fussing around to get the cursor to be lined up correctly for it to actually allow you to resize. It’s really bad with the built in track pad but with an external mouse it’s even much worse. The mouse tracking is SO imprecise and so incredibly laggy that 5 minutes with stage manager is literally enough to annoy the **** out of you and make you never want To use it again.
External mice should honestly just track the same as they do on MacOS and have a more accurate cursor. The mouse having a huge circle that then tracks inaccurately and has the momentum type tracking that the trackpad has is just honestly horrible. It feels like the whole screen is made of ice and you’re slipping and sliding around.
I was excited for this on an external monitor but honestly after using it once I’m ready to never use it again. It really needs MAJOR improvements.

Clearly next time Apple release a new operating system they need to make sure it goes through a better Beta testing process so that these bugs and feedback can get dealt with before the OS is released to the general public.
Oh... Wait...
Wait, what? So you’re saying that Apple releases a public beta specifically to NOT get feedback? Because providing bugs and feedback is exactly what I’m doing, so that Apple can improve these issues in upcoming beta’s. I also used the Feedback app to provide the same feedback, but I’m also posting it in this forum because I imagine someone at Apple keeps an eye on threads like these. Did you actually read my post where I laid out exactly what the issues are and then ended with saying it needs ‘major improvement’? That’s because it’s actually feedback on the state of the feature in the current public beta and with a conclusion that it needs improvement; in the areas that I described. That’s feedback.Clearly next time Apple release a new operating system they need to make sure it goes through a better Beta testing process so that these bugs and feedback can get dealt with before the OS is released to the general public.
Oh... Wait...
It seems like you’re implying Public Beta means = you’re not supposed to criticize functionality or report problems. Which is the exact opposite of the purpose of the public beta.

What size iPad do you use? I’m wondering if stage manager is perfectly fit for 12.9”.I've now upgraded my iPad and Stage Manager is perfect for my needs. I can maximise an app to full screen whilst Stage Manager is on and shrink the app a tad to access groups of apps at the side. It's perfect.

Tbh, I’m not even sure if apple will listen to feedback at all given their condescending and arrogant culture led by Steve Jobs traced back to 1980s. There are also no shortage of people saying their feedback never heard and never addressed, so they gave up. Public beta might as well be a way for apple to get some telemetry and that’s about it.If we all just shut up about everything that’s wrong - how is Apple supposed to know their features aren’t working correctly and how are they supposed to improve them?
Huh? If Apple doesn’t listen to feedback explain what happen to Safari during beta cycle last year. Once people gotten a hold of the iOS 15 beta… changes were made due to feedback specifically with Safari.Tbh, I’m not even sure if apple will listen to feedback at all given their condescending and arrogant culture led by Steve Jobs traced back to 1980s. While yes, that got changed during beta cycle, it’s pretty rare and tons of pressure is also applied from several high profile individuals (in the tech world) and media. For the most part, even if they listen, they will just ignore. Did apple ever bother to address safari tab randomly closing issue when cloud tab group is on? No. Does apple ever bother To promote gaming on Mac? No. While I can say my flat “never listen” is wrong, the amount of feedbacks they throw out of window without a second thought is just massive to give me the perception that they don’t care.Huh? And as far as I know… this is the first time Apple applied settings for users to choose which preferences they want because of feedback. I understand some feedback will never be addressed, but let’s not go so far as to say Apple doesn’t listen to feedback.
