Apple in iOS 16 is introducing some significant improvements to Siri, making the built-in personal assistant more useful than ever.

If you're on a hands-free call, you can now ask Siri to hang up for you. Just say "Hey Siri, hang up," but be warned that the person on the other line will be able to hear you. The feature is supported in both the Phone and FaceTime apps.

Siri can insert emoji into texts when you're using Siri to send a message, and Siri is also now able to automatically send messages so you don't need to verbally confirm.

For those who use Shortcuts, Siri is able to run shortcuts as soon as an app is downloaded, with zero setup required.

If you want to know more about what Siri can do on your device and in apps, ask "Hey Siri, what can I do here?" You can also ask about a specific app, such as "Hey Siri, what can I do with Weather?"

Apple has also expanded offline support for Siri, so Siri can do more without needing to contact Apple's servers. Siri can manage HomeKit, intercom, and voicemail requests offline in iOS 16.

It’s a shame that Siri is still not smart enough to use language x when u always communicate with contact x in language x. Everything always ends up in gibberish when my iPhone is set to German but I write in English. It could easily base it on the keyboard. Just like the dictionary.

I don't feel like that's new. I've done this for years when taking calls on my HomePod.

Some flavor of this works with HomeKit (e.g. HomePod) and Personal Requests. I can tell the one HomePod I have with Personal Requests feature enabled "Hey Siri, hang it up" when my iPhone is ringing. It's handy when the phone is no where nearby which is most of the time haha. I do understand what they are talking about here is a different, and potentially awkward (with the other person being able to hear you) feature.

Or you could ask the person you're talking with to hang up 🤪

And yes I know Francis, there are cases where the other party isn't available, like when you're talking to an automated system or you're on hold.

Do kids even know what “hang up” means in an age of smart phones and no home phone? This seems like a gen X feature.

Learning another language with an app constantly switching keyboards has made my text generation insane.
