I was really looking forward to having the camera button instead of the mute switch because my phone was on silent 99% of time, unfortunately I haven’t used it once since getting my 15 pro on a launch day.

I don’t like how the silent mode icon clutters the status bar so I’ve actually started having my phone out of silent mode just to get rid of it and then getting annoyed by multi step process of turning the silent mode on when I have to activate it.

1. Unlock the phone (no CC on the Lock Screen)
2. Open Control Centre
3. Tap the button
4. Lock the phone

Realizing now I should probably just make it a mute switch.

You can turn off the silent icon. Go to Sounds & Haptics.

And when will they make a toggle for activating camera by swiping on the lockscreen while locked? It is stupid! I have had the camera go on in my pocket soooo many times.
Yes, I think they completely forgot what „Lock Screen” was intended for. It was mainly to prevent accidental pressing! But nowadays it is completely useless in this aspect…

The "replacing the useless Ring/Silent switch" argument only works if it's an either/or choice between Action Button and Ring/Silent Switch. It falls apart when "Both" is a valid option.

Apple's marketing is basically making you forget the "Both" option exists and therefore see the Action Button implementation as a step forward. It's the same for Dynamic Island's marketing - it could have just been a notch that changes size, just like Dynamic Island, without taking so much vertical screen real estate.

Man I'd be happy if they could figure that out with the flashlight/camera buttons on the homescreen. Very often I look down and there is light shining through my pocket or I pull my phone out and its smoking hot as the camera has been on a ready to shoot for a long time.

I mean, which software company doesn’t like developing their software like Internet explorer? When legal action at foot, they can just say “sorry, the cost of fixing those is too damn high and we don’t want to raise the product price by ten fold”.

To be fair, that switch on my iPhone XS Max has switched to alarm position without my notice too.
You’re holding it wrong my friend. Wise words from our dearly departed.

Wish they'd do something about the flashlight button and camera button/swipe from the lock screen.
Tired of pulling my phone out of my pocket and the camera screen is up

For the action button to add value for me I need the flexibility of short press and long press. Long press to activate/deactivate Silent Mode and short press for everything else. I don't accidently press the button so no need for the current limitation of long press only.

The biggest issue I have with the button is its placing. It makes no sense where it is. It’s awkward, uncomfortable and inconvenient to reach for.

Let's hope data on the Action Button usage shows lower usage than expected and Apple figures out why - poor location and implementation

Just give me the damn option to get rid of the camera and flashlight on my home screen. Or is like Internet Explorer, so baked into the operating system that it will break if they remove it? I know how to swipe down from the top right to access those faster than a McLaren pitstop.

They should absolutely give you the option.

I like them there, it's convenient for me. And I never have a problem with unintended activation from either of them. But that's no excuse for not making them configurable for people who don't.

Apple does so much stupid crap like this, things that should be user configurable aren't. And yeah, I'm still angry about scroll arrows, taking them away on the Mac was and is incredibly stupid.

Or it could have been a BEZEL. The notch/pill is stupid, and should never have happened.

And yeah, sure, add a button. Nobody sane would have minded that. Don't take away the switch.

Most of us never touch the mute switch. It was completely useless for a huge portion of us. The new design is much better. If muting and unmuting is important to you, you still have it. If it isn't, this new design makes a useless switch into a useful, programmable button.
Guess I’m Not ‘most of us’ then. Use the mute switch all the time. It’s a defining thing for iPhones in my view.

Always strange to see people extrapolating their preferences to the whole world

Only here will people disagree that a button with multiple functions is not as good as a switch good for literally one thing only.

I wonder which sensor(s) they use to determine “in the pocket”. Both light and proximity detection could have inconvenient false positives.

How does it know it's in a pocket? Are they putting RFID tags in our pants now?

They use the proximity sensor that's been in the iPhone since the first iPhone. That sensor is the primary thing that allowed an all touch screen phone, as without it, touches would be registered all the time in a pocket, while on a call, etc.

Have the 15 Pro since release and haven’t touched this button a single time.
If it would be possible to assign more features to it I might think about it. In the current state it’s useless for me.

You can assign it to run a Shortcut, then make the Shortcut do whatever you want. That's pretty much an endless amount of features available.

Wish they'd do something about the flashlight button and camera button/swipe from the lock screen.

I really don't see how this happens to anyone. Are you putting it in your pocket with the screen facing outwards (away from your leg)? That's the only way I can see these phantom touches happening, and it also opens you up to the possibility of a lot more damage to the screen. It should always be in a pocket with the screen facing towards your leg.

What’s kinda cool is I suggested this on the feedback site that the Lock Screen buttons switch back to the lock screen or disable the buttons after I nearly killed my battery with the flashlight this is one step closer I guess

Simple. Look out for the phone temperature rising as the focus hunting goes crazy.

Agreed. I get it replaced the mute switch but that was placed where it was as it was to do with sound, hence near the volume buttons. An action button doesn't need to do this and should be placed where it is easy to reach, midway down the right side of the phone, or even below the sleep/wake button would make more sense.

I wish turning on the flashlight didn't light up the screen. (And inexplicably, turning off the flashlight lights up the screen, too, which really doesn't make any sense.)

Having both and repositioning the Action Button to a more accessible location is a vastly superior choice.

The switch didn't have to go for the button to happen
