Who told you you need antivirus on android? This is completely false.
No, it isn't false. Whoever told you don't need one was lying to you. But there are plenty of good free options, such as Bitdefender. Android can and does get malware. This isn't refutable. There are plenty of shady garbage apps on the Play Store, and as someone that works in IT for a living, I've had to remove malware from many Android devices over the years. Android can get many of the same malware that desktops can get, such as ransomware. There are almost 4 billion users on Android. It's a prime target for malware. Anti-virus apps, like Bitdefender, take two seconds to install, use almost no resources, and are free. There's no reason not to install something like it on your phone.

I have plenty of android devices, for years and years (along with my apples stuff). Never had malware, because its impossible to get if you have a modicum of intelligence installing things.

Not I didn't say it dosnt exist, I just said you dont *need* antivirus. To suggest otherwise is false information.

Android works in much the same way as iOS, everything is unprivileged and sandboxed. Unless you do something stupid (admittedly more possible on android due to its more open approach), but more importantly *specifically*. Its not anywhere as easy to infest an android phone as it is a traditional desktop - as you're trying to imply.

There are plenty of shady and garbage apps on all app stores including apples. I would go so far to say that its far easier to get ripped off on apples store with 5 quid a week subscription widget makers and suchlike. Sanctioned by apple, daylight robbery.

I would strongly advise against running something like an antivirus (which is given privileged system access, and therefore does what it wants). Especially a free one. The antivirus app is itself breaking the security model of the os.

Apple One (premiere) does have News+ included....in select countries...I'm in the USA, an have it...
Yes, that's "Premier". I'm talking about "Individual" because I don't need everything. I already have iCloud+, tv+, and Music. I don't need Arcade but News+ instead.

This is also false, as there have been reports time and time again over the years of perfectly legitimate software from legitimate sources being compromised. You can drastically reduce your chance of getting malware by being smart, but it doesn't make you immune to it.

I didn't say that you said it doesn't exist. You said nobody needs it. Which is false.

This is completely false. iOS is far more locked down than Android (sometimes to the point of obnoxiousness), which is why the EU has been all over them. I also didn't imply anything. You said Android doesn't need an anti-virus, which implies Android doesn't get malware. Emphasizing the word "need" doesn't validate the point you're trying to make.

Correct. iOS is vulnerable to malware as well. But anti-virus software cannot be installed on iOS, at least not ones that actually do anything. This is actually an advantage Android has over iOS in a way because only Apple can address threats on iOS (which can sometimes take weeks or months or even years), whereas the anti-virus on Android can neutralize them as they occur in the wild.

I would strongly advise against running something like an antivirus (which is given privileged system access, and therefore does what it wants). Especially a free one. The antivirus app is itself breaking the security model of the os.
I would strongly advise you not to give terrible, dangerous, and incorrect advice to others. The anti-virus needs that level of access to prevent actually bad malware from also having that level of access. Bitdefender is a reputable company. The fact that they offer a free alternative to their paid software is irrelevant.

Bitdefender is free, is a reputable company, protects against all kinds of threats, and uses minimal resources. There's zero reason to opt out of using it simply because you're being "careful."

Go and google some facts. Start with 'badness enumeration' and work your way around to how mobile os' actually work. Then stop telling people they need antivirus on a system that doesn't need it.

You can stop lying to everyone now. It'll be much more helpful.

back before the e.u. was in effect, i read a rumor here that google was testing a version of chrome with its own engine for ios for when it eventually was allowed, but of course that doesn’t mean it’ll come anytime soon or ever. i agree with you that making those changes in the united states would most likely accelerate the process.
Let's see: MacRumors, 2000; Google, 1998; EU, 1993.

Nope, I don't think you read anything on MR, about Google, before the EU was "in effect".

Understood, I was posting for clarification as well. I wish we could have proper ala carte options, I have never used a game center in my whole life nor arcade. Gladly dump TV plus and swap it out with News plus for my situation.

[iOS 17.5 Bug]
I noticed a bug in Books about audiobooks. The total time of the book and the remaining time of the current chapter are not right. Total time is always 1200 hrs (but indeed the book is about 50 hrs in total, with about 30 hrs remaining from the current chapter I am listening to), remaining time is not accurate where I have a chapter that lasts for 11 mins, the remaining time of that chapter is just kinda random (exp: I got 1.5 mins left but it says 11 mins left.)

Yup, I wish there was à la Carte. One size does not fit all. :(

Based on my experience, iOS 17.5 introduced more bugs than it fixed. This is particularly true with my nine HomePods. Accuracy has dropped at least 20% and the usual “something went wrong, please try again later”

The frustrating part, there were times that the same nine iPods with much older versions of iOS worked considerably better. This is not intended as a poison pin comment, rather a simple testament to apples’ lower bar of standards and talent. But hey, at least we have new product colors and more life-saving emojis. 🙃
