Can’t wait for the accidental Siri trigger rate to skyrocket. Good job Apple, not thinking things through yet again.
What makes you think that no one at Apple has thought about this obvious issue? It might very well be that instead of triggering on the words "hey Siri", the new trigger algorithm listens to the complete phrase/context to trigger. There are huge advantages in AI that make this possible today where the original "hey Siri" simply couldn't.

It would be nice if we could rename Siri, I have the same problems with Amazon Alexa. But in Japan we’re not offered very many names to rename her we have Ziggy echo Alexa Computer etc. But we don’t have any additional names and we can’t buy them unlike the United States in etc. Yeah I even have problems with Alexa going off when I use computer which is one of Alex‘s names. So until they can make it anything there’s gonna be problems.

I don't think it's necessarily a recipe for disaster, it depends on whether Apple can do it right, but I'm not optimistic.

I have 2 devices, a Google Nest Mini and an Amazon Echo, side by side in my living room so they both listen to a lot of TV. I assumed, since "Hey Google" or "OK Google" is a slightly more complicated sequence than just "Alexa", that my Echo device would false trigger more than my Google device. In fact it's the exact opposite, my Echo device hears and responds to the wakeup command brilliantly and pretty much never false-triggers whereas my Nest device reacts to the trigger pretty well (but not as well as my Echo) but false-triggers at least once a week.

I think that implementing the wake-word detection well or badly can far outweigh whether it's a one or two word wakeup sequence. Just Apple might be using this change as an opportunity to completely re-vamp the detection algorithm and/or train it a lot better. We'll find out soon enough I suppose.

And you get the pleasure of telling Siri (in CarPlay) which app you want to use to listen to music.
Every
Single
Time
Without cellular service, Siri used to (≤ios16) would tell you there's a network problem, but play your request anyway. Now (iOS17db5), it just doesn't work.
I was wondering how the new “choose the messaging app” will work with CarPlay when everything is hands-off

I just wish the back to back request would work on the HomePods. That is the best place for that feature. And Siri works great for me for things like messaging, reminders, shopping list, smart home control, playing music...etc. You know things that an assistant would do. For general info though she is not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I didn't see difference in Messages when using CarPlay vs iOS16.
(I had to go back to iOS16.6 as I could not sync my music using iOS17db 5.)

Siri needs a ground zero overall on the backend as well as on the device front. It’s wild to me that we have arrived at a point where AI created music will “not be eligible for Grammy awards” but Siri still massacres simple tasks such as “dick tater shins.”

What I’ve often wanted to do is say “Siri, I need directions to my next calendar appointment”. Really handy when driving. Seems like a reasonable thing to do.
You can easily do this with a Shortcut.
But yes: very strange it’s not available by default.

Their track record alone is enough to not trust this change.

Great, now instead of Siri just activating when I say "hey" (son's name) it will just activate every time I say his name which phonetically sounds NOTHING like "Siri".
Exactly - I wind up activating Siri at least 2-3x A DAY without intending to. Not sure what I'm saying that sounds like, "Siri", but it's freakin' irritating.

Still, no option to rename Siri. Siblings and Families would keep activating everyone else's Siri unintentionally.
I think Apple should allow us to rename Siri. This would help those who live with someone whose name sounds like “Siri”. I would also like it so that I could target specific devices. I hate getting out of the shower, telling my phone to resume playing, and have the Homepod in the living room start playing something else.… loudly.
