sorry for anyone willing to goof on this, let me share a story-

my mother suffered from dysphonia for multiple decades. up until I was about 14 or 15, I hadn’t heard what her real voice sounded like, then she got botox injected into her vocal cords (which absolutely terrified me, lmao)—the result was life-changing.

she then passed just before I turned 17.

I would give literally anything for this feature to have existed in her time. my recordings of her voice are scant—those with her true voice, nonexistent. if I could have had a model of her voice created, just to hear her say “I love you” one more time…

no, I’m not looking for sympathy. I’m telling this story to point out how incredible of a feature this is. someone’s voice is something you only remember for so long after they’re gone, unless it’s particularly distinct. had this been around, I could possibly still have an iPhone with her voice model to this day.

my 89yo grandmother is certainly not at risk of losing her voice any time soon, but I will be sitting her down to do this when iOS 17 comes out. this is an incredible step forward, and I continue to laud Apple for their strides in health-related issues.
Actually that's really dope.

Especially for really young children whom had a parent or loved one read books to them to sleep. Missing them would be easier to deal with - and better than getting a Megan bot.

All seriousnous what about videos ... did you not have those?

I wonder if I can choose a voice with a text-to-speech software and type out of the sentences to train this. Then I can have that voice to make it say whatever I want right on my phone. 😁

I wonder that as well but I have time since it will take long before technology leaves English only territory. But I may dub some my videos into English :)

Another step in the direction of post-mortem AI personae. Bring on virtual immortality! 😊👍🏼
Also: why not replace Siri’s voice with that of your spouse? Or, if you are into cloning, yourself? Weirdness all around🤣

Man, this thing is taking forever. I did my voice yesterday and you have to plug it in for it to generate the voice profile and have the screen turned off. I woke up this morning and its still only at 95% before I had to take it off the charger.

Also, I feel personally attacked...

the new era of phishing and scams to come 😳
How, exactly?

The recording process takes 15 minutes, and you have to say the sentences on the screen. It's not just 15 minutes of any audio. The person whose voice you're creating has to either know what's going on, or you have to be a really good conman to trick them into saying those sentences. Then it has to process, which could take as long as "overnight".

That gets you one voice, which could potentially trick people who are familiar with that voice. That limits your targets, a few hundred people maybe? And you have to somehow know the people who would know this voice, and be good enough to trick enough of them into giving you what you want. Because if they don't know that voice it's no different than any other random person trying to scam them. In which case why not use your own real voice, or a currently available artificial voice, both of which are easier to get.

So how exactly does this result in a new era of phishing and scams? What am I not seeing?

Has anyone gotten this to work yet?

I know it said it'd take some time, but the progress on generating the voice has been stuck at 0% for a while now
Mine got to 33% then reset. It’s at 17% now. Been a few hours. It keeps notifying me to charge it and turn the screen off even though it’s charging and the screen is off. So… it’s trying lol.

long story short, I wasn't exactly using my camera for recording stuff with family when I was a teenager ahah- was using it moreso for capturing moments with friends in high school and whatnot. hindsight is 20/20…

A little bit of a digression, and a history lesson...

When Edison invented and marketed the first (cylinder) phonograph, he emphasized the device's ability to not only reproduce, but also record sound. The included accessories enabled the user to record their voice on a blank wax cylinder. He called these "records", as they were a record of that person's voice, to be kept as a keepsake.

"Record" is pretty much the term that was used to describe recorded physical media for decades.

When you've done the process and the voice is created, where/how can you use it on the phone?

under accessibility > live speech > turn it on
then under voices you can see your speech profile that you'll be able to select. you won't see it until after the profile has finished creating.

Then you can triple-click the side button, choose live speech, and type in what you want to say.

I don't really know where else to use it yet.

haha ok cool, I keep getting those notifications too.

~24 hours after intial set up I'm at 80% - I'll keep waiting!

That was already happening. Unless you can sit your target down for an hour long recording session this isn’t much of a risk yet. I suppose if someone has access to your unlocked phone they could use your voice but in that case you have big problems already. I suppose with prolonged access this could be an issue.

There are already realistic artificial voices.

Does it work? I read all the small lines, kept the iPhone plugged in, and still "generating" 0%. Repeat again the process without any interruptions, and still "generating" 0%. I guess the demand is high now, otherwise, I cannot find a logic answer.
