I have checked the base iPad models and there is no A11 Bionic version... iPad Air 3 uses A12 Bionic so it is possible that it will be the minimum supported chipset... Also, iPhone 8/8 Plus/X are all on limited support on iOS 16 and they may get dropped once iOS 17 is announced/released...

I see this as a good thing. The narrower the range of performance thresholds the OS needs to hit, the more optimized it can be for what it does run on.

5 years is not that great compared with the current Samsung and Google update schedules which unlike Apple's are actually written down.

They will have had six full versions of iOS, and will get at least a year, possibly two of security patches afterward.

They'll drop that down to 3 years soon enough. Battery will be welded into the phone body but anyone willing to change it themselves (and continue enjoying no os updates) can do so with tooling costs 2-4x the phone price and wait 3 hours in tech support cue to get replacement battery "calibrated".

Always was, as far back as I can remember. Big reason why I got out of the Mac ecosystem (still clinging to iPhone/Watch and Apple TV at least). It's wasteful to be throwing away devices that could potentially last another 5+ years on top of that, but when they even drop support for security updates, you don't have much of a choice.

I wonder if the iPad Pro 2018 and 2020 will drop support at the same time?

The 2020 have 6gb ram instead of 4gb ram (aside from the 1tb model), and a better gpu, but both have the same A12 cpu.
Hopefully it takes a couple of years to do that.

I wonder this often. I think if they do cut off the 2018, but not the 2020 and/or if they make 4GB vs. 6GB the real dividing line, A12X/A12Z iPads that get let in will run whatever iPadOS version that the 4GB iPad Pros were disallowed from like crap.

A11 Bionic and iPhone X is getting pretty old in the tooth, that was late 2017. I don't know that many who still have that phone considering how we got several better form factors after that.

FWIW - I think the iPhone X is the best form factor of them all. I would buy a Pro series iPhone of that size any day of the week. Current Pro phones are (IMO) too large.

More like minimum 6 years is looking to be the standard for receiving the latest software updates (with 6-8 years being the range), with a couple years of security updates to follow.

Any technical reason for the cutoff, or just old? Everything in iOS has been full 64 bit for a while, supports Metal, there's supported devices with similar RAM, what would be the technical line?

I hope this isn't becoming like macs, where the last few Intel cutoffs didn't seem to have any technical barrier apart from them wanting to retire old hardware.

This is really rather strange. If the A10 iPad can run iOS17, the A11 iPhone X should be able to. So this doesn't sound like a technical cutoff at all, but rather a "that's old, we don't want to support it anymore" one.
