Again, assuming they aren't running and financially preferring their own system on said TVs

I'm amazed at how often I see totally custom rolled UIs on hotel TVs still, and how elaborate they can be.

so let me ask directly, what hotels are you staying at? This doesn't replace a system, it is compatible. It's just another option to select, at least thats how I see it for mirroring from android devices.

I can't remember the last time I got in a rental that didn't have CarPlay.
This! I love how people are expecting hotels try and prevent this in order to sell their pay-per-view, just like all those gps systems that car rental companies would rent out to you for a s—t ton of money? Somehow they let CarPlay and just plain google maps take over!

That’s the problem with this. Unless Apple is sending out a massive army to install the hardware at no cost to the hotel owners we can expect this to appear in a VERY small number of hotels now and for the foreseeable future.
Yup just like with CarKey. I only know of the BMW 5-Series that supports it. No other manufacturers have plans since they already have something of their own setup.

Totally different situation

I see custom UI PPV stuff in nearly all the hotels I frequent

Yeah, CarPlay in rentals isn’t even in the same ballpark. Car rental companies do massive buys that they have all customized from the outset. Having CarPlay and Android Auto in a rental car WILL increase rentals. But hotels are different. There are thousands of hotel owners. All of them with different hardware. Getting them to standardize around AirPlay sounds awesome but again, unless Apple is going to make this free for hotels to implement you can expect not to see it in very many rooms for a very long time.

Curious... In hotel, who watches video on a TV?
Yeah, exactly. I stayed at three different hotels (O’ahu, Maui and Kaua’i) in Hawaii and I only turned on the TV in one of them. It didn’t stay on for long. Seeing the natural beauty of those islands and experiencing the culture beats whatever you can see on TV by miles and miles. In Maui, I just had to go out to my balcony and had the Pacific Ocean and the island of Lanai in my face.

Not everyone in hotels is there for a vacation. I used to live out of hotels, and you don’t have enough money to do all sorts of fun stuff when stuck somewhere for a month, and the weather doesn’t always permit if you do.

This is a small but very valuable feature to have when you don’t want to channel surf on a TV with a ****** interface.

But -- that's Hawaii

It's just a little less interesting outside when you're at the Westin Chicago O'Hare on a Tuesday

I'm surprised to hear you have an Android device

Um. Did I say I did? I said I see TV's at Marriotts that as part of their options is mirroring your phone, I select it, and it basically leads to me to Android casting and I give up. I can read and experience without having to own one. It's about the only reason I would consider an android device. Maybe if they made an iPod equivalent that was easy to use and I could download movies to it. Its possible Androids have gotten way way better than the early days when I considered them over my iPhone 6, but you are right, I enjoy the benefits of the Apple ecosystem too much to complicate my life with mixing and matching android and apple.

but hey speaking of, what Apple devices do you use? Just curious because I just read a post of yours where you gave up your Apple Watch for Gamin for battery life, and you returned your AirPods Max for presumably a cheaper alternative, and we all know you will never ever ever want an AVP. So what part of the apple ecosystem do you like and use?

p.s. you didnt answer my question. what hotels do you stay at that dont support any form of streaming but have pay per view instead?

My mistake - I read your comment as a personal experience with your own device
My error - apologies

Um, it IS a personal experience. Seriously, are you going to suggest the TV is lying to me when it presents a feature for mirroring? It says this feature is compatible with android devices. I dont have to own an android to prove them right.

Speaking of personal experiences, I was sincere in my direct question to you about what hotels do you stay in that you haven't seen android mirroring and other streaming services, but instead have these apparently homegrown UI's? I travel a lot for work, spent 78 nights in hotels last year (roughly 25 different hotels), and there are certain amenities I have come to expect. It's a preference thing (only) and I would prefer to avoid the hotels you don't name. Are they all a similar brand or? Please?

True and false. True there are thousands of hotel owners. False that means they are all doing their own thing. The true independent hotel owner only makes up less than 30% of the total rooms available. The majority are in fact a few chains that do, in fact, standardize to get better bargains on all of their furnishings.

I cant speak for how fast Apple Airplay will roll out, but its a good sign that maybe 25% of the rooms I stayed in last year (and I spent 78 nights in hotel rooms last year traveling for work), had android casting, or so it said on the tv menu. You can google it though if you don't believe what the tv said. It's already a thing.

I don't think anyone is going to choose a hotel based on whether it supports AirPlay on its TVs. There are just way too many other more important factors involved in that decision. Sure, I'd like it if the hotel had it, but I had already found a hack on YouTube. There are well-hidden button sequences on those ubiquitous blue and white universal remotes most hotels use. Once you know the secret, you can switch the TV's input to its secondary HDMI port, plug in your AppleTV, and voila! Instant TV just like at home! It's polite to switch it back before you check out, and we do.

But having access without having to go through that, well, yep. I want it.

Yea, exactly why you(a hotel) could benefit greatly from having this feature and thus making yourself more attractive to someone who might lean in your direction 'cause you've got this.

Wait, is apple going to be charging hotels for this? I missed this in the article.

But hotels already have revenue streams attached to the screens in the rooms. This actually circumvents that. I just don’t see any incentive to add this.

What I find kind of said is Apple is just getting to this point of being able to offer it.

One thing nice about the chrome case devices that were released 2013 (10.5 years ago) had this feature day one. You could caste to a device NOT on the same network as you and it was possible to caste to a device with out being on the same WiFi network.

It was a great feature to turn on and it would attempt to find a TV in the same room as you and if the owner of the device enable the feature boom you could cast to it.

I say about damn time Apple.
