I can see an easy exploit to this. When calling any business that has an automated phone answering system it’s going to announce this recording. By the time, a real person connects, they’re not going to hear the announcement.

Also, I wonder if this could be exploited by calling a second phone you have to start recording and play the message, then calling whoever you’re intending to call. Once that person picks up then just drop the other line.

Just some quick thoughts and wonder if Apple has thought about this as well. This seems like the AirTag where they just announced it without thinking how people can use it.
There are multiple ways to covertly, though not always legally, record a phone call on a mobile phone. Apple recording makes it easier without any additional hardware.

Maybe it’s so that if you pull up your wallet for Apple Pay you don’t also show everyone your balance? A privacy thing?

It wasn’t shown when you invoke the cards through a double click of the side button, so no, that’s not it at all.

And what you get if you are living at EU?

This is a beautiful example how EU regulation blocking the innovation

Not having OpenAI crawl my phone is literally the best thing and sole reason why I’ll be keeping my 14 Pro forever

You should have mentioned that the AirPods Pro 2 Hearing Aid feature is not available in all regions.

I’m sorry but the thing about “Call Recording” is simply not true. I have an iPhone 15, upgraded to iOS 18.1 and I’m based in Italy. Call Recording was advertised in the changelog before installing the upgrade but it’s simply not available. Here is a screenshot of a phone call I did to a friend right after I updated the OS. I think the article should be updated to reflect this.

not blocking anything at all.
the date EU users will get the AI features has been announced.

UK gets them in december, EU gets them in April 2025

I’m EU and I don’t get it either. What the heck Apple.

It shouldn’t be legal to advertise something they don’t actually have. What they’re doing this year is outrageous.

it has to pass EU regulations, and that's how long it takes the EU to approve it.
as posted above, EU gets it in april 2025, UK gets it in december.

they advertised it as coming in iOS18, and that remains factually correct, they didn't say it would come in 18.0 or 18.1.

I'm not an expert, but I do follow tech fairly closely—and I'm still confused. First, I've noticed that some official Apple stores seem to be misleading customers. We often hear that it’s on the customer to do their research, but should we really have to investigate that much to avoid potentially misleading information? You know that Apple advertises AI in Europe - and then you have to read the fine prints. Yes it's the customer's obligation.

In an official Apple store in Europe, I was personally told that the iPhone 16 comes with Apple AI. Let's assume it was just a misinformed salesperson, and maybe it's still partly on me for not digging deeper. However, here on MacRumors, I read that call recording would be available in iOS 18.1, even for devices without Apple AI. Let's say it's MacRumors' fault for not clarifying this feature's availability in Europe, meaning customers would have to keep up with every Apple announcement detail to stay informed.

When I installed iOS 18.1, I could've sworn the screen indicated that Call Recording was included. Maybe I misinterpreted it, and Apple never said that. Even though I follow tech as a hobby, I’m still left unsure about what I am or am not getting.

According to Apple, call recording is coming with iOS 18, and I don’t see any fine print or asterisks indicating it will be available later.

Until recently, I thought at least European users wouldn't receive Apple Intelligence on macOS but we did. It's also my fault for not spending hours doing the research. Which left me wondering about call recording there. Where is it? Maybe it's not included—that’s on me; again.

But I was never informed about a waitlist. I’ve read that some people waited a few minutes, but in my case, it’s been over an hour with no sign of it (I just updated my system).

So, it seems like we as customers might be doing everything wrong, while Apple is doing everything right…...

PS. And of course, we keep hearing that Apple is always late because it takes time to deliver polished, reliable features. But the image cleanup tool? It's unbelievably bad—amazingly so. Plus, Apple still can’t manage to support basic languages properly, which has been an issue forever. This year, especially, Apple really messed up on multiple fronts.

EU regs should next focus on apple’s intentional underspecing their phones to force users to upgrade to the very latest to get basic features. Inexcusable an iPhone 14 has so limited ram that it can’t run something 3 year old Android devices can successfully run.

I don’t know how Apple can think ChatGPT is going to keep our data anonymous, when you’re using image playground and your sending your photo to the servers your photo is like a thumbprint and it will collate all that data around that photo and eventually with enough photos they will be able to build a profile on you. o_O

Maybe they’ll do it like with Google. Even if you’re logged into Google, as long as you’re on Safari, they can’t spy on you at all. 😂

Another cool feature - you can create a shortcut that brings up control center. I have assigned it to my lockscreen (replacing the camera shortcut), so I can press on it to bring up control center without having to reach for the top.

Also a pretty handy function to map to your action button. :)

I was kinda hoping they'd fix the music app crashing if you lock your screen issue, and the abundance of new issues with typing, such as extra spaces being added when you use swipe text and retaining misspelled words when autocorrecting.
