A rather big addition not mentioned in the article is that you can now change your default AppleID username to a iCloud/Me email/alias without losing the ability to keep the associated external email.
That’s huge. Still stuck associated with a .edu email even though my primary is a @me.com Apple ID. Where can I update this?

I read that call recording would be available in iOS 18.1, even for devices without Apple AI. Let's say it's MacRumors' fault for not clarifying this feature's availability in Europe, meaning customers would have to keep up with every Apple announcement detail to stay informed.

it is for me in the UK, and we don't have AI yet (coming in december).
also have the item removal tool in photos.

But I was never informed about a waitlist. I’ve read that some people waited a few minutes, but in my case, it’s been over an hour with no sign of it (I just updated my system).

you're in the EU so you don't have AI until April, so any waitlist is not applicable to you (for now), nor me in the UK (until December)

Apparently we do have Apple AI for macOS and there was a waitlist. You see how confusing it gets?

And, yes, there was a waitlist.

I guess being this old and retired I can't seem to get excited enough to upgrade my iPhone 14PM. Not even this stuff is really that compelling for me. Getting old is so weird cuz if I was in my 20's or 30's I would be ready to give my money to Apple every year! :p

we're not talking about macOS though, we're discussing iOS18

either EU regulations don't apply to desktop/laptop devices, or you have macOS set to US English to get around the AI restrictions (like you would do on iOS).

You’re right but if you read my replies , you will see that I was referring to the confusion. Apple made.

It’s not all “AI” that has that label. That’s why Apple Intelligence is a distinctive term and some features still have “AI”.
It does not use generative AI (powered by Apple Intelligence), but instead it relies on the NPU onboard and uses a more simple ML algorithm, that's why this feature, the call recording and transcription are available on devices that are not able to run Apple Intelligence.

I do believe the object eraser from the photos app might be available in the future, as it even has its own model (separate from Apple Intelligence per se) which is downloaded the first time the feature is used, although this one still uses generative AI and therefore could be limited by the amount of RAM available.

I never wanted Siri and never used it. Like I never liked Social Media and never used it. Same for AI now.

I don't even want to have it on my devices. But deleting just the Siri-App on my Mac seems not to solve the problem. It's only 2.4MB. I just recognized the version number is 1.0 in macOS 15.2 Beta. So this isn't even Siri anymore?

In iOS there isn't even an app, it's only in the settings.

I don't want Siri to learn from my other apps as standard setting for each app when I haven't even activated it.

You never used it because Siri has been useless for a decade. If it was actually intelligent you might consider using it.

That might be true but. But I just didn't like AI or things like Siri, Alexa etc. even if it is really intelligent.

I just wiped my SE2 and restored it to 17.7 before it's too late. I already did this with my SE3 when 18.0.1 had been released.

There are multiple ways to covertly, though not always legally, record a phone call on a mobile phone. Apple recording makes it easier without any additional hardware.
Agreed and before doing it always check local laws. In the state I’m in as long as one party is aware of the recording it’s legal. Of course calling someone out of state brings in extra complications.

I don’t have any use for recording but I know some people say it’s a good idea for business transactions.

My phone doesn’t do AI (did take the update no prob) but my MBAir M1 did and the ”erase something” in photos is extraordinary first attempt. A function downloads when you launch for a photo. Doesn’t work for even a two second video though. Lots of fake news potential there. (yes wifey I undeleted you) 😀

whilst i have the call recording function, i can't see any transribe option.
apparently there should be a transcribe button when you are in the recording in notes, but no button there.

Sorry, I just saw your reply now.
Open Settings, then tap your Apple ID name at the very top. Then go Sign-in & security.
You can then choose an existing email or alias and flick the switch to make it your primary email. Alternatively you can add new one and the previous emails will still remain on your account.
